The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense. After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a … nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.
Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance—and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.

If you want a book that will keep you up all night because you can’t put it down, then this book is for you. A suspenseful, sitting on the edge of your seat is definitely how I would describe this wonderful book about a woman who comes home from a business trip only to find her husband missing. With the discussion of divorce before she left on her trip, did her husband decide to leave on his own or was there something much deeper going on? I was hanging on to every page up til the last page! I highly recommend this

I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of mystery and intrigue that keeps you guessing what is going to happen next. The references to space and planets was very interesting and educational without being nerdy. There were lots of great expressions comparing space and the relationship between Sarah and Ben.
The story weaves the past and present and there are times when you have to stop and think about what time period you are dealing with. But it really isn’t too distracting.
As is true for most people, there are relationship issues with either family, friends, or colleagues. So the characters are true to life and is seems realistic. The author does a great job of developing the characters and keeping you interested in the story. In fact, this is one of those books where I didn’t want to put it down…I kept flipping through the pages and had trouble making myself stop at the end of a chapter.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
An intensely suspenseful and fast-paced story from the opening page, The Space Between is a race against a ticking clock. Her husband is gone, having left behind a host of near inscrutable clues and somewhere among them she’ll find the truth. But will she be in time? The mysteries of the universe that form a backdrop for this domestic thriller are effortlessly and intriguingly woven in with the more human mysteries that surround the human heart.
Truly enjoyed Dete Meserve’s new suspense novel. The characters were well fleshed out, the plot moved quickly, and I loved learning about astronomy in the process. If you enjoy stories about ordinary people who run into extraordinary trouble, this is for you.
I just want to say that this is one of the best books that I have read in the last year. Dete Meserve had me from the first sentence.
I really liked this book!!! Not just because of the suspense and mystery, which was good because I didn’t figure it out until almost the end and even then I didn’t know the how or why. The main reason I liked this book was the way that the author compared the mysteries and unknown about space to the mysteries and unknown about life.
There have been times in my life that I couldn’t see or understand the space between because I was blinded by the light. Not everything in life can be explained or discovered at the moment that we want or need. Some things get discovered in their own time and some things remain a mystery. That’s just life.
This is another solid outing by Dete Meserve. The protagonist of this book is a world-class astronomer, who is blindsided by the disappearance of her husband. The mystery is compounded when she finds out things about her husband she did not know, and her angst is magnified by her realization of how far apart they had drifted. The story includes a little for everyone including science, mystery, nail-biting suspense, action, and a bit of romance as she tries to rescue her husband, herself, and her marriage.
I never took an astronomy class in college…now I see a bit of what I missed…the wonder, the science, the mystery, the romance behind the stars and their names. And it is the same with love, you look at a couple and wonder what in the world they see in each other, you can’t see it….but they can.
Ben and Sarah, married, son Zack feel like they are drfting apart. He is a famous restaurateur and she is famous in her own right working with the stars and galaxies. And one day Sarah arrives home to find Ben missing, Zack confused, a gun in the house, security footage missing and a deep sense of fear.
Police and FBI become involved in the missing husband as Sarah finds money moved into her account, strange phone messages and a dead body in NY last seen with her husband.
This is an indepth look at a woman holding on as evidence mounts against her husband. She reminisces about their past and her love of the stars, of their communicating in Klingon, of their bond in being nerds. It feels so private and deep and personal. The sun blinds you from seeing past it….you miss things, events.
This is a mystery but so much more, do you really know your loved ones, your friends, or yourself. And the love, the bond, that keeps you strong even looking into the bright sun….that is what matters. Savor this….reach for the moon and land in the stars.
Dete Meserve knocks it out of the park with The Space Between. This is the perfect summer read if you want an engaging mystery thriller. Meserve’s main character astronomer Sarah arrives home from presenting her breakthrough findings at a conference. Her husband Ben, a wealthy restaurant owner is missing. What happened to Ben. I love how the author lets the reader exposes Sarah’s thoughts at every turn. Once the police and the F.B.I. get involved, it looks like Ben has murdered someone and taken off. Twists and turns keep the reader involved. Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing. for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy.
Dete Meserve has hit a homerun with “The Space Between.” From the very first page until the end, this was a novel I found difficult to put down. However, when life intruded, I was happy to end my day with a few more chapters, Meserve is now on my short list of must-read authors. Her style is captivating, with a well-researched background which is as believable as the character’s readers immediately care about.
This novel has it all, romance, mystery, intrigue and a satisfying twist.
The Space Between is an amazing book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish. This is a story about Sarah Mayfield, her husband Ben, and their son Zack. Sarah is a well known astronomer who comes home from presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a spellbound audience across the country, to realize her husband is missing. Her son Zack saw him last and Ben’s last words were, lock the doors and set the alarm. Sarah begins investigating what has happened to her husband, in doing so she must face the facts that their marriage was crumbling and did she really know her husband as well as she thinks she did. There seems to be a lot of secrets she didn’t know about. This book is not your average fiction novel, it is full of mystery and suspense. Each chapter takes you deeper into the lives of the characters. It was a beautiful love story with a very suspenseful plot woven through it. I couldn’t wait to learn more with each new page. I love Dete’s writing style and completely enjoyed Good Sam, but she continues to surprise and surpass with each new book. I highly recommended this book and give it 5+ stars Dete Meserve you are awesome as always!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review. Sarah works for NASA, her husband Ben , owns a popular L.A. restaurant. They have been married fifteen years and have a fourteen year old son. From the outside, they seem to have the perfect life. Sarah has just returned from DC, presenting the find of a lifetime but Ben isn’t home. Thus begins this suspenseful twisted story. I could NOT put it down. I found myself tethered to the wall, charging the kindle so I could continue the story. 4.5 twisted stars.
The twists and turns of this one kept me turning pages, wondering what would happen next. The author developed the story and the characters in such a way that I was continuously revising the way I felt about all of them, including Sarah. This was a good reminder that sometimes things may look true, but if they don’t reconcile with what you know or believe, it is always good to look past them and check the space between what you think you know and what you believe.
I also enjoyed the way the author wove in astronomy facts, which has reinforced my desire to head to the desert to look at the sky and see what I can see.
This was my first read by Dete Meserve and I was not disappointed. This was one I couldn’t put down and recommend to anyone who likes a good story that keeps you guessing from beginning to end.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions are strictly my own.
Expected publication July 24th
I have read and love every one of Dete Meserve books, and this one did not disappointed! It may be her best book yet!
What a fast paced, action packed, and intense novel! Dete Meserve does a fantastic job of capturing the readers’ attention immediately and maintains it throughout the entire novel. The Space Between is full of plot twists and turns and even though I guessed the main plot twist long before the end, the reason remained unknown, and were really surprising!
I loved the writing style and descriptions of the scenes and you could tell she spent time and things were very well researched. The characters were very well developed and it was intense watching the main character struggling with whether or not her husband was guilty.
If you haven’t picked up a book by this wonderful author I recommend you try this one. I’m giving it a strong 5 stars!
This is my first book by Dete Meserve and I’m not sure how I missed her earlier books but I know its time to add them to my books to read lists. This intense novel had me turning pages to get to the bottom of all the mystery. I loved the main character of Sarah and her determination to find out what happened to Ben.
Sarah is an astronomer who has just returned from a trip to NASA to present an exciting new find. When she gets home, her son is there but her husband Ben is not at home. When he doesn’t return, she calls the police to report him missing. She finds a hidden Glock and a deposit for one million dollars in their account. The FBI finds a murdered woman and tie Ben to the murder. Sarah is in despair over Ben’s disappearance but just can’t believe he is capable of murder. As she tries to get to the bottom of it, she discovers secrets about her husband and issues with their marriage that she never knew existed. As she struggles with the truth she has to rely on her belief that the truth isn’t always what it seems and that you have to look at the spaces between the facts to get to the real truth.
This was a fantastic mesmerizing story that kept me up way past bedtime. The two main characters, Sarah and Ben, are written so well that I was hoping for a happy ending for them both because they were such wonderful people.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Let me start by saying that I am a science geek. I absolutely loved reading all of the interesting things about astronomy.
The Space Between is pretty great. It took me on a wild ride through belief and disbelief, hope and ominousness (yes, I just made that up,) and so much more.
This is one of those stories that would make an excellent movie.
Though this is the first book I’ve read by Dete Meserve, it won’t be my last.
From the first page of the book, I felt like I had a super- secret novel that only I had and cozied up for what I knew was going to be quite a ride. I was right!
“Thriller-mystery–suspense-who done it” page turning brilliant story of Starry facts and captivating fiction with relatable, interesting characters.
Astronomer Sarah Mayfield is the perfect heroine in this story of a broken marriage, disturbing discoveries, deceit, lies, and love and also the deep love she and husband Ben have for their teenage son. The twists and turns and goings-on of all parties are suspect and it kept me mesmerized throughout.
What we see, or don’t see, even in the face of strong evidence will keep you pondering and beautifully entertained. I did not figure out the who done it and that goes to show the brilliance and talent of this author who brings awesome astronomical facts, research, love for family and a serious thrilling ride until the very last page that will keep you up until the late hours when the stars come out. This book will make you want to go out and star gaze and wonder how big and vast life and the universe really is…
I went back and read many quotes of the uniquely brilliant writing. It will be enjoyable to many readers of several genres (mystery, domestic thriller, women’s fiction, marriage thriller with a touch of romance) I gave this book 5 big, bright stars and have put it on my best of 2018 and give it my highest recommendation.
Wow! What a great book! I read it all in one day! Once I started, I could not stop! I’ve always been interested in the stars and constellations so the way the author used them as parts of this story intrigued me! Her descriptions of the desert sky made me think of camping out under California skies as a child! The suspense built the more I read and I was surprised by the ending, I had my suspicions but she kept me guessing. The sign of a great book! It definitely makes you rethink the state of your marriage and reminds you to keep that love alive!
The Space Between is riveting suspense, a book that took so many turns that I had no idea what was coming next! Along with suspense, this was also a love story about a couple who fall in love beneath the stars, but who have drifted apart….all of those feelings are melded into this story about a husband who goes missing, and a wife whose feelings are conflicted and confused. I loved Sarah…I loved that she was a smart, badass scientist who always seemed to be one step ahead of the authorities, and also a wife looking for the truth at the same time she’s looking for her husband.
I have to thank #NetGalley, #Lake Union and #Dete Meserve for this awesome book.
It had me from the title. I’ve always loved everything about space, the atmosphere, the whole thing. It’s the most fascinating thing ever to me. Like the oceans, it goes on and on forever. Not beginning and no ending and we are but one tiny dot. That is just awesome to me.
Sarah and Ben are a typica couple. Married a long time and have a son. They drifted apart in so many ways but can they find their way back to each other. Ben is missing and Sarah has no idea where he is or what he has done. She was gone when Ben went missing and now she is second guessing herself and him. What can you do when the person you loved and trusted more than anyone in the world becomes a stranger. Do you trust them or try to figure out who they are? Will things ever get back to normal. Will Sarah ever know what happened. Will Ben be ok? So many questions. So little time to figure it out.
Can Sarah and Ben find a way to get their lives back on track or is it to late. Will Ben be ok? This was a very good book from start to finish. A true love story with so much suspense, betrayal, lies and deceit involved.
Two of my favorite lines in this story are: “If we’re going to understand what happened to your day, we have to look beyond what we can see,” I say, “and search in the space between.”
That line is what gave me the reason for the title of this book. I loved it..
The human heart is not so easily understood. Sometimes what we’re seeking is right in front of us, even if we can’t see it. Sometimes we have to look beyond what’s concrete and measurable and trust in what’s unknowable.
I loved that line also. It sums up what can happen if you take things for granted in your life, relationships and friendships.
I loved this book and gave it a big 5 star rating. It was so good and the first book I have read by this wonderful author. I can’t wait to read more.
