The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense. After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a … nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.
Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance—and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.

This one is a page turner! I stayed up until 1am to see what happened. The author brilliantly wove in starry facts with compelling fiction. This is the third book of hers that I’ve read and I look forward to more!
A page turning mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Twists and turns challenge preconceived notions about relationships as the layers are peeled away. A must read!
I honestly finished this book in one day! Great pool read for someone looking for literature that can create a visual experience. Dete weaves a realistic, harrowed relationship with an unimaginable criminal circumstance, much like Gillian Flynn’s, Gone Girl. EXCEPT, Dete does it with empathy and heart in a way that doesn’t make the main characters out to be villains, but rather humanizes them. Awesome read!
Lindas Book Obsession Review
My Review of “The Space Between” by Dete Meserve Lake Union Publishing July 24. 2018
“The Space Between” by Dete Meserve is an intense, intriguing, captivating and stirring story. The Genres for this story are Fiction, Mystery and Suspense. The timeline is in the present and goes to the past only when it pertains to the characters or events.
The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. Sarah Mayfield is a renowned astronomer, who is presenting her theories of a major breakthrough at a conference. When Sarah arrives back home to her husband Ben and son Zeke, she finds disturbing evidence, that Ben has disappeared. The Christmas tree is up earlier than usual, and there is a present under the tree but she has no idea where Ben has gone.
When Sarah and Ben first met, they were enchanted by the stars and the constellations. They would write messages to one another in code. In the fifteen years that they are married, things have changed. Sarah feels that the marriage is in trouble. As Sarah searches for Ben and the meaning of his disappearance, deep secrets, and information that she never knew about her husband surfaces.
Suddenly there are twists and turns. Ben’s driver is found dead. There are other people found dead. There are threatening lawsuits, charges of embezzlement and murder. Different people could be suspect. As the FBI becomes involved, even Sarah is a suspect. When Sarah looks through her telescopes, she often has to look in the space between to see if she is missing something. Now Sarah realizes before it is too late, that she has to start to look in the spaces in between.
This is a fast paced story, with twists and turns, and some intense moments. What exactly is the truth? Who is the murderer, and why is this happening? I received this ARC for my honest review. I would highly recommend this action packed novel for those that enjoy the genres of Mystery and Suspense.
The Space Between is the first book I’ve read by this author and it definitely won’t be the last! When Sara Mayfield returns home from a business trip she finds that her husband is missing. What follows next is a well written story that will have you turning the pages. This is one of those rare books you won’t be able to put down until you’ve read the last page. I highly recommend it!
I love the epigraph at the beginning of this book…. “Silently one by one, In the meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, The forget-me-nots of the angels. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. What happens when you think you know the person you’re married to but then something takes place and questions arise and doubts set in? This is a fantastic book with mystery and suspense. I was pulled into this story like a meteor into the gravity of earth and didn’t want to escape. I love the character of Sarah and her determination to find out what happened to her husband, Ben. What the police and FBI were saying about him was nothing like the man she knows. He surely wouldn’t have done the thing they are saying he did . She knows what the evidence right in front of her says but it’s just not making sense. Sarah’s logic comes from her astronomical expertise. “Most things are not as they appear.” “So many of the most remarkable discoveries are made when we look past the obvious, when we find ways around being blinded by light, and when we discover new ways to see in the dark.” I really appreciate the research and how Dete Meserve incorporated astrology into this story. I learned so much. I am fascinated by what’s in the sky and beyond what we know so having that as an aspect in the story was great. This is a fantastic read and I highly recommend this book. It’s worth 5 stars and the galaxy they’re in! TY Lake Union for the opportunity to read this wonderful book and to Dete Meserve for sharing it with us!
I love a mystery where you cannot predict the outcome and this book did that! There were so many surprises along with the suspense of what happened to Ben that I did not want to put this book down because I NEEDED to know how it was going to end! One of the things I enjoyed the most was that the two main characters, married couple Sarah and Ben, were relatable- married for 15 years, they had lost the spark that brought them together in the first place. By all appearances, they appeared to have the perfect life, but while they were both successful in their careers, they not only were struggling with their marriage, but they were also having issues, behaviorally, with their son, Zack. I also enjoyed how the author sprinkled in flashbacks to how Sarah and Ben met so you could get a sense of who they used to be as a couple. I received an ARC via NetGalley – my opinions are my own.
This suspenseful page-turner is a MUST READ book! She does it again, with another hit! Dete Meserve is a very unique author, in the way that she entices the reader, leaving them wanting more. I HIGHLY recommend The Space Between!
This was an excellent read that captured my attention immediately and never let me go until the end. There was obviously a lot of research put into this book by the author as some of the astronomy information was not something most of us know or have heard of. I love reading books that not only have a good story, but also impart information I wasn’t aware of before.
The characters were so full of life, well rounded and real that if one had spoken to me I wouldn’t have been surprised. Even though Sarah felt her marriage with Ben was troubled, she never quit believing in him and trying to figure out what happened. I wanted to cheer for her!
This is a wonderful, suspenseful and captivating thrill ride of a story and I’d recommend it wholeheartedly.
Significant clues are often hidden “in plain sight.” Astronomer Sarah returns from a business trip where she presented an important scientific discovery, only to discover her teenager home alone and her ambitious restauranteur husband missing. What follows is some evidence tampering on her part — intentional and unintentional — as she seeks to find her husband and find out whether he actually is guilty of the murder he’s been accused of committing.
The suspense builds, with intruders, secret codes, and plenty of evidence that Sarah herself is not blameless when it comes to problems in her marriage to Ben. Who can be trusted?
A well-crafted thriller; I didn’t want to stop reading!
THE SPACE BETWEEN by Dete Meserve has a compelling storyline that hits home how we sometimes stop seeing things—truly seeing things—because they’re in our line of sight every day; they tend to get lost in the shuffle and often “hide in plain view.” I highly recommend this extremely well-written book.
As captivating and complex as the night skies that feature in The Space Between, this is a thrilling read. A precipitous shift in perceived reality causes everything past and present to be suspect. Meserve skillfully crafts all the elements of a superbly suspenseful page-turner.
Lusciously written, The Space Between is a multifaceted read that will keep you churning through pages. With a backdrop set against the night sky, one woman must discover the secrets her missing husband has been hiding before she becomes the next victim.
THE SPACE BETWEEN by Dete Meserve is fast-paced, suspenseful story with lots of twists and turns that kept me riveted from beginning to end. Astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home from a career-defining business trip to find that her husband Ben appears to be missing. Nothing seems to add up as she and son Zack try to piece together the disturbing evidence being revealed as the investigation into his disappearance proceeds. As with her scientific endeavors, Sarah realizes that things may not be as they seem and she must look beyond the obvious if she wants to learn what happened to Ben. She begins to question who she can really trust to help her. The vivid descriptions of the beauty and mystery of the stars and the space between them created the perfect backdrop to this intriguing story. I could not put this book down! I highly recommend THE SPACE BETWEEN and look forward to reading more from Dete Meserve. Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read an early copy.

It’s alot of things most important is it is the next book you want to read!
“Things aren’t always exactly as they appear to be.” This quote from the novel should be kept in mind by everyone who is reading this. It is a wonderful book filled with intrigue, mystery, suspense, tension and romance.
Many questions may come to mind as one reads it, but there are no answers until the end.
A married couple growing apart eventually become reconciled as they confront together all the bewildering happenings they meet. The plot may seem confusing at times, but it is never uninteresting.
Another line from the book tells, solutions are usually there in plain sight but we fail to see them. So many times that is the way it is in life. So let’s keep our eyes open!
Excellent book! Well written!
SCINTILLATING!!
The Space Between by Dete Meserve is scintillating!! The author paints the entire story with the most beautiful imagery that will mesmerize you from cover to cover. The characters are complex and realistic. The plot is dynamic! This is a microscopic look at one couple’s life (one family’s life) and the space between them. What do you really know about your spouse? What if circumstantial evidence led him to be the lead suspect in a murder suspect in the death of woman he was involved in through business? There are so many deep insights included within the pages that make you start paying attention to things that are hidden in plain sight, things aren’t always as they seem and the space between. Great Beach Read! I was provided an ARC of this book by Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
The Space Between by Dete Meserve is an outstanding, out-of-this-world work of art! This book starts off with a bang and never slows down. Main character, Sarah, is an astronomer who returns home from a conference to find that her husband is missing and that security system footage of their home has been erased. Working with a colleague, she is able to recover snippets of footage that lead her to wonder just what kind of dealings her husband was involved in. This book will keep the reader guessing as to each character’s motivation and intentions. This one is not to be missed!
The Space Between by author Dete Meserve has an intriguing plot which is so interesting. The prologue opens the story with a beautiful marriage proposal from Ben to Sarah. I was so disappointed that her beautifully described infinity ring was lost a day later.
Now to present day, Sarah Mayfield is ecstatic and feeling on top of the world as her research with NASA has led to her discovery of a hidden asteroid traveling within earth’s orbit. It has been named Earth’s Trojan and is a breakthrough discovery. Sarah has no idea while she is enjoying the euphoria of speaking to a conference room full of scientists in Washington DC, that her personal world at home in Los Angeles is being rocked to the core.
After Sarah returns home she is a little worried when Ben does not come home at his usual time. He owns Aurora, a top restaurant and she decides he is staying late due to an issue at the restaurant. But when he has not come home during the night and there are no replies to all of her text messages, she becomes very worried. Ben was to testify during a court trial in a few days regarding money, his partners, and the restaurant. Maybe he is missing because of the trial.
This is the beginning of a very interesting mystery which gets more complex with each day. Ben is missing, his car is missing, there is no response to his phone and the security footage from the various cameras in and around their home has all been erased! Would Ben have an ulterior motive for leaving the family because Sarah had told him before she left for her trip that their relationship was broken? Why did he leave?
A very good story and wonderful characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This engrossing and fascinating story concerns a woman who after coming home from a business trip finds that her husband is missing from their home. Sarah Mayfield is a prominent astronomer and has just presented her theories of a significant discovery at a conference. I find it inspiring that Dete Meserve has done her homework in the field of Astronomy and this shows in her grasp of the subject presented through the character of Sarah.
Ms. Meserve, with her usual attention to detail, embellishes the various characters; Aaron-coworker, Zach-son, Rachael-sister, Kate-TV reporter, with engrossing characteristics. I could actually “see” them and their interaction. This is a captivating novel and is unsurpassed in its representation of the mystery genre. And mystery abounds indeed, with all the intriguing, surprising events. Along with her husband’s driver, other people are found dead, and Sarah even becomes a suspect. I found it very difficult to stop reading because I didn’t want a single incident to happen without my presence!
For those who enjoy a book you won’t want to put down, I recommend this swiftly evolving whodunnit. I not only love to read a book with a compelling plot, but one which also enlightens the reader. Astronomy has always fascinated me and now I find myself wanting to know more about the subject.
