In his signature style of grand storytelling, James A. Michener transports us back thousands of years to the Holy Land. Through the discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in an ancient city and traces the profound history of the Jewish people—from the persecution of the early Hebrews, the rise of Christianity, and the Crusades to … to the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. An epic tale of love, strength, and faith, The Source is a richly written saga that encompasses the history of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener’s Hawaii.
Praise for The Source
“Fascinating . . . stunning . . . [a] wonderful rampage through history . . . Biblical history, as seen through the eyes of a professor who is puzzled, appalled, delighted, enriched and impoverished by the spectacle of a land where all men are archeologists.”—The New York Times
“A sweeping [novel] filled with excitement—pagan ritual, the clash of armies, ancient and modern: the evolving drama of man’s faith.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Magnificent . . . a superlative piece of writing both in scope and technique . . . one of the great books of this generation.”—San Francisco Call Bulletin

Slow. But steady reading and before you know it your done. Filled with information and you suck on n knowledge without realizing it
Favorite book I have ever read . What a fantastic book
While I’ve read most of Michener’s stories, The Source is NOT one of my favorites. Typical Michener; great storytelling with an historical slant. After about 800 of the 1063 pages it seemed to me to become a bit tedious.
Helped me understand the middle east situation a little better. Excellent story.
A great book. James Michener definitely was a wonderful researcher and story teller. I would get so involved in the story and it would go to the next time period and story. It tells the story of the history of the Jewish people, and each story would leave you wanting to know more. His writing really draws you in and captures your interest.
Love James Michener!
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I have read it more than 4 times and each time I discover new ideas.
This is probably my all time FAVORITE book. Wonderful and filled with wonder. I have lost myself completely while reading. Makes you laugh and cry about the human condition.
Really, really slooooow……
Bunch of Rabbis sitting around for 5 pages determining if women should throw out water on the sabath….really slow.
I read this years ago. It’s worth reading again.
Interesting look into Bible History
An all encompassing view of the evolution of an outstanding and engrossing land and people. Fascinating insight in how people thought and acted in a long ago time and place.
Wonderful explanation of religion.
I felt like a time traveler.
Like all the other books by James Michener, you fall into the story and characters that he presents to you. I think this story was my favorite. I hated to have each time line end. You grow to love the characters, and when each story ends you want to stay there and live in that time period. Can’t say enough about this book.
Great read. Good story about the history of a people —how their religious beliefs helped them survive.
Another Michener classic–highly recommended.
I loved the idea of picking one location and following through time. It was fascinating and so interesting.
Love the history
Great history of the Jewish nation.
