In his signature style of grand storytelling, James A. Michener transports us back thousands of years to the Holy Land. Through the discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in an ancient city and traces the profound history of the Jewish people—from the persecution of the early Hebrews, the rise of Christianity, and the Crusades to … to the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. An epic tale of love, strength, and faith, The Source is a richly written saga that encompasses the history of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener’s Hawaii.
Praise for The Source

“A sweeping [novel] filled with excitement—pagan ritual, the clash of armies, ancient and modern: the evolving drama of man’s faith.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Magnificent . . . a superlative piece of writing both in scope and technique . . . one of the great books of this generation.”—San Francisco Call Bulletin

Typical Michener. I liked the way he incorporated the archeological artifacts into telling the history. Sometimes the book was slow, but the author presented lots of ideas of things that occurred in history. Very thought provoking.
Magical yet realistic depiction of the history of Israel and the Jewish faith. Michener tells stories behind the story of a world view of the rise, fall, rise, fall and eventual rise of this historic nation.
I have read most of his books but I just couldn’t get into this one.
I read this about 40yrs ago. Still one of the most exciting and interesting books I’ve ever read. If I were young today I would want to be an archeologist.
Michener creates three-dimensional human characters who illuminate over three thousand years of cultural history.
One of the most boring books I have read. Actually, I couldn’t finish it.
Took me forever to finish this book. Got really tired of the persecution of the Jews and all the rigamarole of religion
Incredible amount of information given in an easy to read book. It is very long, but I found much deeper insight into the 3 major religions. The characters are well developed.
I couldn’t put the book down.
I read years book 40 yrs ago, could not put it down even though I had 3 small children to keep me occupied. Still my favorite book.
A classic Michener. He is the ultimate story teller. His pen weaves fictional characters and events in a way no other does. His stories are historically accurate and scintillating, and this is one of his best.
I liked it.
My favorite all-time book!
Very informative, but a very slow read. I finished it, but at times it was dry and the story dragged. But would recommend it to folks who enjoy historical fiction, Qverall, I was glad I stuck with it.
Great read if you like Michner.
This was my 6th read of what I consider his finest book
Loved it!!!!!!
If you’d like to discover the Source of one of today’s major religions read on. Michener starts at the dawn of time and tells the story of the Middle East peoples. A great storyteller for sure and my favorite.
Slow read. Interesting from a historical prospective
I say I recommend it but with reservation. I found it very long and eventually gave up after approx 90 % of the novel. Just did not hold my interest any longer. It is typical Mitchner, long detailed and thoroughly researched.
its a slog. well written but tedious and could have been told in many less pages
