Former homicide detective Nicole Foster has hit rock bottom. Driven off the force by her treacherous partner and lover, she’s flat broke and struggling with a gambling addiction. All Nicole has left is the dream of a warm bed at a homeless shelter and the haunting memories of three-year-old Kelsey Chase—whose murder case ended her career. As Nicole obsesses over the old facts, she realizes … realizes everything about that case felt off: a disinterested mom, a suicidal pedophile, and too many questions left unanswered. When the little girl’s grieving father begs Nicole for help, she’s drawn back into the investigation…and given one shot at redemption.
But the deeper Nicole digs, the more evil she uncovers, including betrayals that hit painfully close to home. Will a shocking discovery be the key to finally getting justice for Kelsey and resurrecting her own life?

One of the best thrillers I have read this year! The plot, characters and story line were believable, gripping, and edge-of-your-seat thrilling! Nicole’s career as a homicide detective is over. The thought of her last case, the murder of three-year old Kelsey, haunts her. She knew something was ‘off’ about the case and the man who supposedly killed her, but when she tries to do the right thing, she loses everything, her job, her house and she loses hope. But somewhere along the way she finds a glimmer of hope. The ending was so shocking as it was unexpected. I thoroughly loved this book and would read it again!
I always enjoy this author’s books, and this was no exception. My only issue is I have to put aside a day or two to read them because I usually can’t put them down! Which of course isn’t an issue at all, it’s a good thing!
I enjoyed this book. I was really hoping Nicole would become a detective again and there would be a whole series of books based on her but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I see there is one additional book about Nicole Foster but that’s all.
This is the fist book that we meet Detective Nic Foster. She seems like a nice caring person, but has a dark addiction to Gambling that really messes her up. Also her “friends” goad her into using her vulnerability to do her over. The story ends in a sad way, but with hope for the future! GREAT read and the second book is dynamite, too !
It held my interest from the get-go….one of those not wanting to put down. However, the ending…well, I’m interested to see if the author has going to have more to give on Nicole Foster to keep me reading. 5*
Another great Gregg Olsen book. Story line kept twisting. It kept me guessing right up until the end, and then I sat with my mouth hanging open. Great Book! I highly recommend.
I found it way too unbelievable that someone like Nicole who had so many personal issues with gambling, people and life in general could be smart enough to solve any case. This story had a decent beginning and I really wanted to find out what happened to 3 year old Kelsey, but the twists to the story were just too far out there for anything resembling normal. I also dislike stories with a whining lead character and this was one of the top whining ones. Just couldn’t believe the final twists and how the story ended. Too many innocents who were falsely accused with tragic endings and horrible people who committed the crimes that seemed to get away with it. Just not my cup of tea.
The author threw in some pretty incredible twists in this story that I did not see coming, and so I’m giving this book 3.5 stars and rounding up to 4. While I can’t quite identify with all the quirks between the 2 sisters in this book, I did find it rather fascinating how 2 siblings can grow up in the same environment and be affected so differently.
Interesting up until the end, when he pulls things together, some of which appear to be pulled out of a magician’s hat. I had no problem with who the bad guys were, great twists, but no explanation of how it happened and who actually did what. So I finished the book and went wait a minute, how did this happen? I felt robbed and angry.
Although the subject matter is sad, this was really good book that keeps your interest right to the last page! I kept getting “a hunch” about who did it, but different hunches every few chapters! Keeps you guessing! This was my first book by this author. Will be looking for more Greg Olsen novels for sure!
Very good story especially the ending.
Enjoyed!!
Wanted it to never end
Excellent writing style
Awesome!
Not my favorite of Olsen’s book, but enjoyable.
This was a very interesting book with a new take on the subject matter. I don’t want to spoil it for everyone, but I will say that the story is really mesmerizing, although disturbing, and kept me reading.
Lots of plot twists!
Wow, this was one great story. Our main character had been screwed over at every turn from her early years to her time with the Bellevue PD as a detective. She has developed a gambling problem that causes her to lose her home, friends, and dog. Ending up homeless she is determined to put her life back together and solve the mystery of the disappearance and murder of a 3 year old child, the case that caused her dismissal from the PD and her partner’s jailing for falsifying evidence to gain a quick resolution. From this point to the end the story is a whirlwind of truth, lies, deceit and dogged investigation………………………….
