The New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels explores a Southern family’s buried history, which will change the life of the woman who unearths it, secret by shattering secret. Two years after the death of her husband, Merritt Heyward receives unexpected news—Cal’s family home in Beaufort, South Carolina, bequeathed by his reclusive grandmother, now belongs to Merritt. In … belongs to Merritt.
In Beaufort, the secrets of Cal’s unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff. This unknown legacy, now Merritt’s, will change and define her as she navigates her new life—a life complicated by the arrival of her too young stepmother and ten-year-old half brother.
Soon, in this house of strangers, Merritt is forced into unraveling the Heyward family past as she faces her own fears and finds the healing she needs in the salt air of the Lowcountry.

I stayed up until 4 am to finish this book. I’ve enjoyed Karen White’s Tradd Street mysteries, so I thought I knew what to expect from her writing. But The Sound of Glass was deeper and more nuanced, sad and satisfying. A wonderful exploratory mystery. I loved it.
THE SOUND OF GLASS is a beautiful book. The descriptions of the scenes, and the emotions of the characters are very real. A multilayered mystery, secrets of a damaged family, and the courage to heal keeps you engrossed throughout the book. This book will linger in the readers heart long after the last page is turned.
This is a beautiful story despite the fact that I found Cal’s motivation for his actions questionable. Despite that, this is a well crafted and well told story. I cried on practically every page. I have quickly become a fan of this author. If you’re one for a damn good story you’ll love this.
I feel like I I moved away from my best friends when this book ended……loved the characters, loved the story, loved the writing style…..a must read – I even got a copy for my 93 year old mother and she loved it too!!!
I loved the story!
This book took a bit of getting used to and I was unsure if I would finish it. Then all of a sudden I was hooked. The author grabs the reader with the characters. My nose was buried in the book until I finished it. There is family, love, violence, surprises and a slightly dysfunctional family in the book. Excellent read. Karen White is now one author I will definitely follow. This book held my interest and I highly recommend this read.
I have enjoyed many Karen White novels. I like her writing style.
Original and very entertaining. Reading in the N.Y. Times about Francis Glasser Lee, the first lady of forensic science, who made the nutshells in the 1940’s was an added surprise! I have recommended this book to my friends.
Evocative of the South, level of writing made me read another book by this author. I did not think the reasons for life decisions really fit the characters, but then you don’t always “get” why people do things.
Love, love, love this book.
The Sound of Glass was the first book I have read by this author. It kept me interested and motivated to finish the book…to find a resolution to the missing parts of the story. Beaufort, SC is a great place to visit and I enjoyed visiting that place again through her story. This is one of those books that stick with you and you are glad you spent the time with it. Read it! You will enjoy it!
Ps. I’m now reading another book by this author and I plan to enjoy a few more in the future. It’s always a treat to find an author you enjoy.
Don’t want to give anything away; it was a good story. Kept me interested from the beginning. There are secrets, tragedies, love. The writing is very well done, the characters are deep and believable. Would highly recommend it.
I loved this book from the first page. It is a book with suspensse, laughter and tears. Romance was an extra plus. A book for everyone. I highly recommend
I haven’t read a Karen White novel that I haven’t liked. Tremendous.
I never knew about ‘sea glass’ before and that it tinkles in a hanging on a porch.
I couldn’t put this down. Great characters and an unusual plot with an unexpected twist.
Easy to read except for the back and forth between the 3 generations. A bit hard to believe that it was “coincidental”. But it was a sweet story of people helping people and the possibility of change. Good character building.
Absolutely one of the best books I have read in a long time.
I really enjoyed this book! This is the 4th book I’ve read of hers and by far my favorite!!
My first Karen White book. Very interesting plot device kept me turning the pages. I eventually figured out the puzzle, but greatly enjoyed the ride this book took me on. Multiple sub-plots keeps story rolling along. Very entertaining and I will look for more Karen White books.
