*** I was given this ARC, in exchange for an honest review. ***
When I first saw the description of this I was intrigued, and I had the right to be. I had never heard of a soul reaver before in fantasy before. So I had to find out what Daphne was all about. You see, she calls herself a monster because she has to feed off of the feelings of others and then once a year consume a soul for her to stay alive.
BUT, she only takes negative feelings and souls with layers of darkness to their very depths. For that reason, I don’t find her a monster. I find her gentle and kind. Just a beautiful being. She just doesn’t see it.
::::WARNING:::: There are triggers in here for self-harm. Daphne harms herself because the souls inside her ARE NOT GOOD. THEY ARE DARK.
Upon looking for the soul to consume she stumbles into a new world that is complicated and dangerous. Where it seems every being in it wants her dead even though she belongs in this new world as a reaver. She doesn’t know whom to trust.
There are so many twists and surprises in this book that I was amazed. You MUST keep your eyes open at all times so you don’t miss anything. Someone is always scheming or something else is happening.
So much action happens in this book that it is almost unbelievable how small of a book this is. I just can’t fathom how Victoria came up with all of this and fit it all in here. I really don’t understand how such literary genius didn’t come across my radar sooner. This will be a forever favorite of mine.
Daphne is really powerful and the way her powers are shown and grow throughout the book are exponential. The way her powers are described is with intricate detail and is really beautiful how she sees people’s souls and feelings. I would even go as far to say that it is breathtaking.
Insert SWOON here.
Daphne finds true love with him and I couldn’t be happier. They have been through so much together in this book and I know they will in the next one too. I couldn’t have picked a better match because this pair is so beautiful together it actually hurts to read about it. Of all the things that has happened to them they deserve some joy in their lives.
Alright, so I knew before I started this book that it had a cliffhanger ending, but damn. With Mist just “in the wind”, it can’t end like that. With all that happened right before the ending. It was like there was an information dump on me, then BOOM the book ended. I can’t handle and process that all at once!! Give a girl a break! Plus I have to wait till book 2 is out to find out about my Mist.
I felt this book down to my heart, soul and back and it was crushing. I don’t know what I am going to do with myself. So you better read this!!!

I guess it is fitting that the next book I am reading is called Broken House. I am feeling a little broken after that.
Victoria is a natural storyteller and talented writer. Soul Reaver will be only the first book I read of hers, but definitely not the last!
