A Sweeping Standalone from New York Times Bestseller Pepper Winters. “Things you should know about me from the very beginning:I was born to true love, witnessed the destruction it causes, and vowed never to let such agony happen to me. I am not a story-teller like my father. I am not a writer like my mother. I am just a son—their son. I am happy being alone. And that is all I ever want to be.”…
I am happy being alone.
And that is all I ever want to be.”
JACOB
The day he was born, Jacob learned his hardest and longest lesson.
It wasn’t a lesson a boy should learn so young, but from his earliest memories he knew where happiness lives, so does tragedy. Where love exists, so does heartbreak. And where hope resides, so does sorrow.
That lesson carved him from the kid to the teen to the man.
And nothing and no one could change his mind.
HOPE
I first met him when he was fourteen at a movie premiere of all places. A movie based on his parent’s life.
He was stoic, strong, suspicious, and secretive.
I was only ten, but I felt something for him. A strange kind of heartbreak that made me want to hug and heal him.
I was the daughter of the actor hired to play his father.
We shared similarities.
I recognised parts of him because they were parts of me.
But no matter how many times we met. No matter how many times I tried.
He stayed true to his vow to never fall.

I have once again fallen in love with the Wilds and their family. Jacob was so broken that it literally tore up my heart reading his story and feeling his emotions. Jacob and Hope definitely had that chemistry that kept pulling me in and I could hardly set down my kindle. The story is so beautifully told and all I could picture was that Jacob was definitely his father’s son. Ren’s personality lived on in Jacob because I couldn’t help but see him in his reactions to Hope and the people around him. The love of the land. The distrust of others. You won’t want to miss the continuation of the Wild family’s story.
Once again I am sucked into the beautifully broken worlds that Pepper Winters delivers with her flawless talents for storytelling.
My love for this authors previous works had me going into this book with the willingness to drown myself in all of the angst, torment, heartbreak and joy that I knew would come but never being able to guess how it ends.
To say that this book wrecked me, made all of my emotions come out to play and then slowly put me back together, is simply not saying enough.
I could not wait to read Jacob’s story and having done so now, I am in awe. It was everything I wanted to read and everything I didn’t. In a sense, it gave me closure to some characters that have stayed with me long after I finished their books.
With all that Jacob has gone through, his heart can take no more. Seeing a love so perfectly right- yet perfectly devastating, has killed the notion of that for him forever.
Hope is just that…….hope.
She represents all that Jacob has closed himself off to but she also is the key to a future he never thought could exist.
I believe this book was written to heal a tiny piece in the hearts of all the readers who have been with the Wild’s since book one, and what a perfect gift it was.
All three books will stay with me for years to come and will be on the top of my list whenever I am asked for recommendations.
You keep writing them Pepper and I’ll keep on reading.
Congratulations on a job beautifully done!
When I read the first two books in the Ribbon series, they shattered my heart into fifty million pieces. Ren & Della’s story brought out so many emotions in me and left me with one massive hangover for a very long time. I absolutely loved their beautiful yet tragic tale, but Jacob & Hope’s story? OMG, it nearly destroyed me! Tears cascaded down my face even after I reached the end. Their story tore out my heart, ripped it in two and then stitched it back together again.
The story follows Jacob as he struggles to move on after the loss of his beloved father. He is so damaged, so broken and due to a promise he made to his dad, very tormented. The promise was to stay on the farm and take care of his mother, but being there brought back all of the memories that he longed to escape from. He has seen firsthand that love only brings you heartache and pain, so he keeps everyone at a safe distance. This way he can’t ever be hurt again. At least that was the plan until the day Hope walked into his life.
Hope had also suffered the loss of a parent, but she didn’t let that drag her down. She is beautiful, brave and larger than life. She has a heart of gold and a whole lot of love to give. She tried so hard to be Jacob’s friend, but he frustrated her to no end. She couldn’t understand how he could just hide away from the world. She wanted him to embrace life and to be happy, so she pushed him, challenged him and drove him insane. Throughout all of this, her feelings for her friend developed into something more. She fell in love with him and all he did was break her heart time and time again. Will she be able to see this thing through? To tear down these walls? To make him see that there is no life without love?
Jacob & Hope’s story was such a powerful and moving read. I thought the writing was phenomenal. The author didn’t just make me feel it. She made me live it and breathe it. I felt like I was immersed in their world experiencing it all just as they did. I loved these characters wholeheartedly and the heartfelt journey that they took me on. I smiled. I laughed. I cried. I cheered. What they had was a love of a lifetime. An epic romance that will stay with me for all of my days.
What does it mean to be the son from an extraordinary love? How do you face the world when the one you love the most is taken from you? Jacob is a complex character. Losing his Dad, he lives a promise to take care of his Mom and see her happy. Yet, for Jacob, loving leads to loss so he works very hard to push people away, compartmentalizing himself away from the world. Hope knows her own loss and has so many unanswered questions about death and dying. Meeting Jacob is eye-opening for her since he suffered a similar loss. She works to be Jacob’s friend but Jacob doesn’t make this easy. I road this roller-coaster with Jacob and Hope as they navigated treacherous waters on their life’s journey. Is there a chance Hope can tame Wild One? Or will Jacob continue to drown in his own sorrow and be perpetually alone? A truly fitting story for one born out of all-consuming love into a tumultuous world. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Believe it or not, this is only my first Pepper Winters ARC… I’ve read the Indebted Series a couple of years ago and to he honest, it was too brutal and too raw for my liking—but I was addicted nonetheless… and when I got an email that I’m to receive an ARC, I was excited but apprehensive at the same time. I haven’t read the first two novels in the series, so I didn’t have an idea what the story is all about except for the blurb that was provided.
This is the story of Jacob Wild and Hope Murphy… it started when they were kids, then teenagers and then when became adults. The book has three parts… and I’m already warning ya’ll that it’s not an easy read. It’s a very angsty love-story. I even had mixed feelings about it… I didn’t expect it to be very sad. I mean, yes, I expected angst but it was more angst than I anticipated. At some point, it even felt like it was too much, and almost draining. Sure, there were parts that were alright, but it was too sadness and tragedy in one lifetime.
I understand grief and phobias… and heck, I even think I have PTSD because of my father’s passing—I was a daddy’s girl… I could relate being reticent, being aloof and just keeping to myself… but people deal differently… I still cry so much about it even after 12yrs… I’m not saying I understand the fact about Jacob’s aversion to touching and getting close to people but we all deal with grief differently… and with each loved one dying, it takes something away from you.
The push and pull was frustrating… I kept on asking myself, will they? Finally?? and right until the couple of last chapters, I was wary… I never thought it would end the way it did… I even lost hope at one point—the irony… but I’m glad it did. It took all the heaviness away… and it was an epic ending to an epic love story.
What can I say about Jacobs story without giving anything away? Not a lot. It’s not like I was expecting, he’s not what I was expecting. He’s….Jacob. He hasn’t had it easy, he’s not easy to get close to but underneath his standoffish exterior is a man that will make you fall head over heels for him. This man is going to frustrate you, he’s going to make your heart ache and he’s going to make you love him because when it comes to Jacob Wild there’s just no other option.
Hope is one of my favourite female characters ever! I’m going to let you all meet the wonder that is Hope for yourselves but believe me when I say she’s going to win you over in about 0.3 seconds.
I’ve been sat here staring into space since I finished this book trying to get my thoughts in order. I honestly loved every thing about this book. The angst is just how I like it. I love that tied in knots feeling, the anxiety of needing the story to go a certain way. The tension between the two main characters…it’s enough to take your breath away.
I’ve been a huge fan of Pepper Winters for years and I have no problem with admitting that she broke me last year with Ren and Dellas story. So much so that when I first heard about The Son & His Hope I wasn’t sure if I was even going to read it. Like most readers will, I went into this with a massive amount of anxiety over what I was in for.
This author has such a unique talent with the way she tells her stories. She makes it so easy to visualise every single thing. I struggle a lot with visualising things/ places to where it feels somewhat real but it’s like I’m transported into her books. I’m there on the sidelines, I can smell the hay, feel the rain, I jump when the lightening strikes.
This book wrecked me in the best way possible. The Son and his Hope is amazing, there really is nothing else I can say about it. It’s beautifully written and is truly unforgettable. This series is without a doubt my top series ever.
There are not enough stars in the sky to give this book!!!! I was rendered speechless once I finished it – completely in awe of how P Winters once again wrote an epic love story which made me gasp for air all while my heart soared and dipped throughout this story.
I never thought a book could surpass how The Ribbon Duet affected me – it was gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, captivating, and so real and raw that it stole my heart and mind indefinitely. I fell for Ren & Della Wild…I lived in the forest with them, my heart broke with them, I wanted to shield them from their past, and cried tears of joy and pain with them throughout their love story. They are embedded in my heart. But – Jacob Wild’s story is just as captivating and heartbreaking. The Son & His Hope adds an entirely new dimension to this series, and you will find yourself choking up all over again for the boy and girl who originally stole your heart in the Ribbon Duet.
Jacob Wild is an enigma. He is this well-mannered country boy carrying the deepest pain. He pushes everyone away because of his fear of love and what that would mean for him when death came. He has the power to love more than his parents, but chooses to hide it instead. I swooned every time he allowed himself to feel his emotions, and choked up every time he mimicked the actions and words of his father. He will forever be one of my favorite broken, yet strong heroes.
When Hope enters Jacob’s life at her young age of 10, she leaves a lasting impression. Over the years, she becomes the light and hope that Jacob needs. I loved her passion, her tenacity, her fierceness and boldness with not only Jacob, but with everything. She was fearless – and she won both people and animals over with her compassionate and fiery spirit. If there was anyone who could rival Della’s persona – it was Hope. The tragic past that these women share, along with their love for Jacob, will both break your heart and then put it back together. I love these women! They embody everything about the human spirit, resilience, and what it means to fight for your dreams and live life to the fullest every day.
Hope & Jacob’s story covers the span of over 10 years. You will feel the loyal and intense love that Ren has for both Della & Jacob, and it will bring you to tears. This family – their tragic past and uncertain future – will bring you to your knees. The passion that this story is written with is all-consuming and soul-captivating, and oh so worth every tear and heartbreak. Jacob Wild will forever hold a spot in my heart that is meant for only a few. He is a fighter. He is a lover. He is loyal and passionate, and maddening at every turn. But you will not regret putting your heart and mind out there for him. Well done once again P Winters!!! I can only hope that you have another story for us in the future with these beloved characters!!
“I see your fear. I see your anger. I see how you want to run but don’t. I see you love but wish you didn’t. I see how deeply you feel, Jacob, all the while begging you were heartless.”
I just love that Pepper takes the time to tell a story regardless of how long it will be. I am usually not that big of a fan of long books, but if the plot and characters are intriguing enough I will wish it didn’t end at all. Pepper Winters is an author who really knows how to engage and entices a reader to keep on reading. I especially am a big fan of characters who knew each other from childhood to grow up and fall in love. Just like with his parents, Ren and Della, Jacob’s life isn’t easy as well. He grew up in a loving environment with the best people around him, but he learned about heartbreak pretty early on. This has impacted him so much that he doesn’t let anyone come close to him.
“A single night is nothing. You’re worth a millennium of nights.”
However, there is this stubborn and headstrong girl, Hope, who will do anything to break down his walls. She really has the patience of a saint, because Jacob definitely wasn’t the easiest person to deal with. But there is just something she sees in him, and she will not give up until he sees it as well. Honestly, my heart broke when I saw how Jacob treated the people closest to him. I got mad at him many times, and I just wanted him to snap out of it. But I realized further down the story that he really couldn’t help himself. I was just glad that Hope didn’t give up on him and stood by him during his most difficult times, even though he didn’t want her around.
“Her vulnerability almost ruined me. Her love so pure. Her care so bright. It closed a coffin around my already dead soul and threw away the key.”
I loved being reunited with characters from the Ribbon Duet, even though it was very bittersweet at times. This book had me on the edge of my seat at times. The heartbreak resulted in me crying my eyes out. I was on an emotional roller coaster, and I didn’t know how it would end. It was a wild ride. I cried, laughed, swooned, smiled, got angry and sad while reading this book. I was happy that the author told Hope and Jacob’s story regardless how heartbreaking it was sometimes. I absolutely Pepper’s writing style and amazing story-telling abilities. It really grabbed and didn’t let go of me until the end.
I knew this was going to be hard to read before I even opened it. I knew I would be utterly destroyed. Broken. Ripped apart. Bleeding and festering in the pain that would be the Wild family in all their glory. I knew I would love Ren and Dellas son as much as I loved them, that I would feel all his pain and suffering and that I would hope against hope that he would some how be made whole again. Or as whole as someone who has lived and breathes death from day one could ever be. I knew Hope would try. That she would give every last bit of her strength and determination to bringing Jakob to life. To atleast accept that death is only apart of life. That love is worth everything. Even if death is inevitable. I fought with her. I bled with her and my heart broken with her.
I was not prepared. I will never be prepared to read this. Or any story that Pepper Winters writes. But I will read them. I will read this again. And again. Because life is hard. Life is love. And life is death. But it is also sunsets. And laughter. And joy. And sorrow. Life is everything and I hope you will enjoy this story as much as I have. It is worth every tear. It was beautiful. And I loved it. I would give this a million stars if I could, but I will settle for five incredible stars and will forever be grateful for the chance to read this tale.

Review
I was so scared to read this book. My heart still hasn’t recovered, and probably never will, from being teared apart in the boy and his ribbon, and the girl and his ren. I picked it up and started tearing up and put it back down. Last night I decided I had to put on my big girl panties and get on with it. I cried so much. It was so difficult reading about ren again, his little notes, things he said. It broke my heart all over again.
Poor jacob,he never got over the death of his father. It left him petrified for love and so closed of for everyone.
Another great read by Pepper Winters.
What is this book about:
This book is about Della and Ren’s son, Jackob. You don’t have to read the first two books in the series but I do recommend it.
Jacob is struggling. He never got over the death of his father. He feels like love ends in pain no matter what so he does everything he can to avoid it.
Hope lost her mother at a young age. But unlike Jacob she hasn’t shied away from love. She accepted that death is a part of live. She wants more than anything to be Jacobs friend and she won’t take no for an answer.
Will she be able to save Jacob or will he remain lost for the rest of his live.
What did I like about this book
I love hope. She is a very strong and resilient girl. She saw that Jacob was worth fighting for and didn’t gave up. No matter how hard Jacob pusher her. And Jacob pushed.
I can relate to jacob, i’m not as bad as him but I keep people away to avoid to get hurt.
He is his father sons through and through.
Rating:
5 amazing stars
Pepper has become my soul destroyer but I wouldn’t take her words any other way. Her gift from bringing such wonderment and joy to such sorrow and death in this series was worth every single tear.
I cannot put enough worthy words to explain Jacob’s and Hope’s story. It’s life and death, pain and happiness, strength and acceptance all wrapped up in a journey called life. Pepper doesn’t sugar coat the heart-wrenching details of sorrow, she demands your attention and pulls you forward with every brilliant world. These characters will forever live with me. Their struggles just breathed life into me, stating that life is truly precious and we all should live it fully with every fibre of our being.
I cannot recommend this series enough. Jacob will break your heart into a million, violent yet delightful ways. His the perfect son to our beautiful Ren. But I fell madly and deeply in love with Hope. She is the perfect embodiment of strength and love. She made me laugh with her fight. A fight you will have to read about to genuinely understand the brilliance of this story.
I bow to you Pepper. A fan for life
The Son and His Hope by Pepper Winters was an amazing read that was so beautifully written. Jacob and Hope’s love story will break your heart and take you on a roller coaster ride of emotion that will leave you in tears. Pepper Winters is an amazing author. Her writing can shatter your heart and then heal it all at the same time. I loved this book so much and can’t recommend it enough.
– [ ] I wish there was an option for 10 stars! Well the highly anticipated story of Ren, Della and Jacob continued story is finally here!! This book is about Jacob’s journey from a 14 year spitfire “wild one” to a handsome, strong man. He truly lives up to his nickname “Wild One”. Hope Jacinta Murphy was just a little girl when she first saw Jacob at the movie premiere of his parents’ life. She was fascinated by him and he, well, wasn’t. Jacob works at his families farm in Cherry River. To his dismay none other than Hope shows up wanting riding lesson. These two remind me so much of Ren and Della! I don’t want to say to much but know this is how true romance should be written!
“Love was a trigger of mine-though I didn’t understand that until much later” Jacob Ren Wild “Wild one” • Hope Jacinta Murphy “little lace” theirs is a story you Must read!!! This was absolute perfection and stunning! Told in dual POV (FYI:don’t forget a few tissues to have handy)
5*
Jacob is the son of Della & Ren those who have read their story will understand the emotions within these books.
Hope has suffered the loss of her mother so thought she understood the feelings of Jacob when they met through her father’s connection to Della. All she wants is to understand, all he wants is to forget and keep people at bay.
Two lost souls dealing with emotions in completely different ways.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Emotional heart wrenching story.
Pepper, Pepper, Pepper….what your words do to me. They leave me curled up in a blubbering heap unable to focus on anything else. No matter how dark or how painful the story-line, you make me root for a happily ever after even though the main character wants to not be loved, is cruel and impatient and cruel (yes I said that twice). Jacob, despite his cruelty to all around him (not necessarily physically but emotionally distant), pulls on your heartstrings and makes you want him to let go, to let others in, to be happy. We just know that he doesn’t have that in him that he holds his pain close and nearly revels in it, being proven right over and over again but wanting to be proven wrong with his next breath. Ren and Della have seriously imprinted on this man and because we know their love story (at least I hope you have read The Boy and His Ribbon and The Girl and her Ren before delving into this story) we expect Jacob to embrace all that is love, but he has demons that are nearly impossible to deal with. Hope has her own demons and deals with them in the complete opposite way which Jacob is not equipped to deal with. This story has all the pain that you might expect, but it may also hold all the beauty that you want.
One of the harsh realities in life is the fact that death is inevitable. Della and Jacob know that losing Ren shouldn’t be such a force in their lives, but nonetheless, that tragedy still has a lasting effect today. Della remembers the past fondly. Using that love to drive her to look forward to the day that she will one day be reunited with Ren. For Jacob – the reality of watching his father’s life slip from this earth left him with a hole in his life that cannot be filled.
The depth of Della and Ren’s love was penned to paper. That story found its way into the world, and caused a firestorm that no one could have predicted. Some condemned the love, while others celebrated the devotion the two had for one another. Through it all, Jacob Wild struggled with the reality of losing his father in ways that crushed his spirit. What he wasn’t prepared for was the day that Hope walked into his life.
Jacob Wild has kept everyone at arm’s length since his father passed away. Hope is determined to change that fact, believing with all of her heart that Jacob is her kindred spirit. Every step Hope makes with Jacob leaves them four steps backwards from where they started. Creating a constant tumultuous push and pull that Hope and Jacob can’t get out of their minds when they aren’t together. How can Hope find a way to break through the barriers that Jacob has placed around his heart? Only time will tell if Jacob succumbs to the demons of his past or finds a way to live the life that he was destined to lead.
*Sigh* First – let me start by saying, if you haven’t read the Ribbon Duet you MUST read both books prior to diving into Jacob’s story. The past plays such a relevant role in the tale that unfolds with The Son and His Hope. As someone that refused to read the synopsis to this book prior to reading, I can honestly say the journey that transpired through the chapters of this book filled me with love, despair, and HOPE!! Devote the time to absorb every single nuance of this story!!
Jacob…..what can I say about a soul that is so damaged that he seems beyond reproach? Then there is Hope….a beacon of pure unadulterated love that shines so bright you can’t help but fall in love with her character. No description seems valid enough to describe these two tortured souls, other that the realization that they were destined to have their paths cross. Two individuals that were suffocating from the world that didn’t seem to understand them.
The Son and His Hope is definitely a unique novel. One that deserves so many eloquent phrases to describe the content. Delving into this novel will bathe you in purity, acceptance, fear, and a love that transcends all others. It was an epic conclusion to the story that began with a boy and his ribbon and ended with hope.
Pepper Winters can decimate my emotions with words like no other. After the Ribbon duet, I was cautiously optimistic that the sequel would bring back those heady feelings, the delicious pain of caring so much for the direction of the story. I was far from disappointed.
Jacob was as broken as one could be, the anti-hero who makes you want to scream, for the wrong reasons, yet fall over yourself to put him back together. He definitely met his match in Hope.
The Son and his Hope delivers great writing, and effective words that make you so invested in the characters, you feel like a fly on the wall. So good.
Fans, you are in for a rollercoaster ride.
The Son & His Hope can be read as a standalone and it’s just my opinion but I believe that readers would benefit from reading the first two books in this series first. I think it best to start from the beginning with the parents to fully understand how their love and a loss affected their son because the result of it plays a MAJOR part in this story. Jacob (Wild One) hides every thing from every one. Hope has questions and wants answers. He hides his truths while she slowly uncovers them. They’ve both lost someone close to them yet, they’ve dealt with that loss in very different ways. This author knows how to write a story that can destroy you with just a few sentences and she did it in this story. It took moments and less than a paragraph to have me crying more than once so have tissues handy. This story isn’t a light read and it doesn’t make you laugh out loud but it is heartfelt and devastating. It feels a bit depressing at times (just my opinion) and yet, it has it’s steamy and loving moments. I absolutely loved Ren and Della’s story. Theirs will always be my favorite, but Jacob’s story is one that shouldn’t be missed. It’s one worth reading.
