In this stand-alone companion story to The Cowboy and the Dom Series, Sam’s only remaining brother, Army Ranger and EOD Specialist, Jim Bowie O’Reilly, suffers an injury in the line of duty, and is sent home to the family ranch in Texas to recuperate. But sometimes you can’t go home again.Thomas and Sam welcome Bowie for a visit in New York, but their D/s lifestyle doesn’t easily lend itself to … easily lend itself to long-term house guests. Enter Thomas’s trusted friend, EMT and former combat medic Gabriel “Angel” Rogers. The two men met once before when Bowie visited Sam for his birthday, and it doesn’t take the men long to admit they had an instant attraction. They soon discover their desires overlap as well and they set each other on fire.
But two big men need space and, as neither is in love with the city, Bowie invites Angel back to Texas to vacation in one of the run-down beach houses he’s flipped. On the eve of their departure though, Angel’s coworker and friend is gravely injured in an accident leaving his ambulance crew shorthanded, and Angel stays behind to help his team get back on their feet.
The distance might be more than either man can handle. With a whole country between them, they manage to derail something that had been going so well and it takes a risky intervention to stop them from ruining the best thing they’ve ever had.

The Solider and the Angel by authors Jodi Payne and B.A. Tortuga is a stand-alone in the Cowboy and Dom series universe. While this is a standalone novel, I felt it better read in order. Sometimes when you get the dynamics of side characters and their personalities, it is nice to know the back story to that. Sam does feature in this book so I would read the series in order.
Gabriel or Angel (his nickname is either Gabe or Angel in this book) is a kind-hearted person who has been through a ton. To make him happy you do not have to do much. He likes a cold beer at the end of a day, good food, and a man to love. Simple kinda guy. He does have his demons to fight but for the most part, he is just a sweet guy.
Bowie is Sam’s big brother. He has been through hell and back with this health. He is strongly independent. Little stubborn. But he loves hard and just needs someone to understand him.
These two characters were made for each other. They are alike in a lot of ways. This deep understanding is what each of them needs in their lives. I loved getting to know these two men. They are truly a love match.
Five Shooting Stars
OMG!! This book was steamy and wonderful!! I really enjoyed Angel in the other books and was happy to get to read his story. Bowie was a mystery. When they first meet, I was hoping they would end up together. Their journey to be together wasn’t easy. They just needed to learn to tell each other how they feel. For these two, that’s easier said than done. I hope there will be another book about these too. Highly Recommend!!
Soldier and an Angel is the 4th Pom in the series and I suggest you read the first three first even though this one is Gabriel and. Roadies story. I like that there are two bears as a couple, both strong . I liked the progression of the relationship as well and all of the characters. You get more Sammy and Tommy too which is good but if you haven’t read the first three you might get lost a little.
There is a lot of hot sex too.
If you like veterans, motorcycle riders, graphic sex, paramedics, friends to lovers, and hot man-sex this is for you.
This is the romance between two characters I love from The Cowboy and the Dom, a terrific 3-book series. Gabriel aka Angel is a close friend to Sam and Thomas, the couple from that series. Bowie is Sam’s older brother. Both Angel and Bowie are military veterans, and they share a sweet and intense connection and understanding of each other.
I have to sigh when Bowie calls Angel his Bear. I love Bowie’s quiet and complete trust of the other man. Gabriel makes me worry occasionally, but he is good and caring. He sometimes gets overwhelmed with the feelings he and Bowie share so quickly. I love this story, and I care about this couple. Their road to a settled happiness isn’t always smooth, but there is satisfaction in my heart for the effort both Bowie and Angel put into making things work. Little brother Sam and his man Thomas are supportive and sweet. I am glad these men are family. While this one was less stressful than Sam and Thomas’ books, with no murderer on the loose, it still helpd my interenst from page one. I recommend all four connected books, and I look forward to these authors working together again. They write engrossing stories, and this is a great example.
After being injured in the military, Bowie is out and coping rather badly with living back at home with his parents. So his baby brother, Sammy from The Cowboy & the Dom, and Sammy’s partner Thomas, come to his rescue and offer a place for him to stay for awhile. That awhile could end up being permanent if their friend Gabe “Angel” has his way.
I was so glad to read Bowie’s story after meeting him in Sammy’s story. While I may not have liked it quite as much as The Cowboy & the Dom series, it’s still entertaining, with light BDSM and lots of steam. Both men had baggage and I like how much they developed, especially Bowie. Neither was big on communicating with their words, but they figured things out eventually. So two likable leads with communication issues, light BDSM, lots of passion, and a great secondary cast, what’s not to like? Nothing, so 4 stars seems fair.
I was really looking forward to Bowie’s and Angel’s story and on most levels this book didn’t disappoint. Angel is a pretty straight forward guy – what you see is what you get – but Bowie is more of an enigma. The injured soldier doesn’t give much about himself except basics. They met shortly a year and a half ago and the attraction is still there, but they barely know each other. Angel is a dom who gave up on searching for a sub who would meet his needs a long time ago. But is Bowie submissive at all? Not on a first or even a second glance. As the tentative and fragile relationship develops Angel is more and more determined to bring real Bowie out to the surface. I actually loved the slow emotional built, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that there was a few bed scenes there that could be easily left out. Not much angst here either, despite many opportunities to work in that direction. It would definitely add a lot of depth to the story. Despite these reservations I enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to read more from these authors.
This is the story of paramedic and Dom Gabriel and former Army Ranger Bowie.
My is my first book in the series and I’ll admit sometimes in the beginning I felt a little lost.. because of this it took me a while to get into the story but then I was hooked.
I liked the way their relationship grew and evolved. You could feel they were building something special.
They were great support for each other.
Together they had a strong connection that took me on their journey to a great hea.
I’m so glad that Bowie and Angel got their story!! They’re perfect for each other. To really appreciate this book you need to read The Cowboy and the Dom series, which is absolutely no hardship because they’re such good books. You can read it without them, but it won’t be as satisfying an experience. So much of who Bowie and Angel are is wrapped up in those three books, which tell Tommy and Sammy’s story. The BDSM in this book takes a while to make an appearance, but when it does, it’s stellar. I love this world, these characters, and the rhythm of Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga’s writing. As a Texan, it feels like home even in NYC. Also, I’m hoping that there’s either one more or a spinoff with a couple of the secondary characters.
Steamy, sweet, M/M romance with a touch of Dom/sub
Envision this: two buff, huge guys (6’4”) and former military who once had a one-night-stand finding each other again. And, boy did they find each other! This is the story of Gabe and Bowie who have mutual friends and family in common, single and mid-thirties. Gabe (aka Angel, Gabriel or Bear) is an EMT in New York and counts his days on a scale of 1 to 10, always hoping for a number nearer 10 than 1.
Bomb specialist, Bowie was injured by a bomb blast and was forced to retire from the Army Rangers. His recuperation at home in Texas with his mother hovering has taken its toll and he’s begging his little brother Sammy to let him come visit. What he doesn’t expect is to run into his one-night-stand again.
Here’s the most interesting part…Gabe is into BDSM but hasn’t had a sub for a long time. Can you truly see a guy as big as Bowie is described as a submissive? Hard. Right? So many great characters. This book was written so well, I began to feel like these two guys could be my next-door neighbors. Everything seems perfect until chapter 32. Great ending though. This was a poignant, steamy M/M story between two sweet but tough and sensitive men. They make the D/s work in their own way. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and it comes highly recommended.
So many things I’d love to say about this book but don’t want to ruin it for anyone. Just know this, the authors did a fantastic job telling Bowie and Gabe’s story. I could envision as I read. A lot of good, hot times were had by these two but also they had a connection that stood out.
Their hot times kept getting hotter as their connection and relationship grew. Sure they had to work through a few things but who doesn’t? Loved visiting with Tommy and Sammy too!
So sit back, relax and enjoy this book, I promise you , you will!
Great story and a must read in my book.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy and I am giving my honest review.
Such a beautiful way to tell the story of Angel and Bowie. They have a long road behind them and they aren’t sure how to navigate the future they are made to find and make their own. Had some times that Angel and Bowie didn’t see it together but they did find their way back.
I recommend the with my heart to anyone who loves the genre or the writers.
I did received a Arc for a review.
Bowie was wounded in Afghanistan and has come home to recover. He comes for a visit to see his brother Sam where he meets Gabriel again. Bow and Gabriel had had a one-night stand. They have an instant attraction to one another. This was a good story full of emotion.
I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I loved The Soldier and the Angel. I liked that it’s a sequel to The Cowboy and the Dom series and we get to revisit Sammy & Tommy too. I love Bowie and Gabe, they are such interesting, great men. I like that their Dom and sub relationship is subtle and slow and caring. The whole book was great, hot, sexy, fun and full of interesting characters. I definitely recommend this book.
