Port Beaufort, North Carolina – May 1765
Seventeen-year-old Adam Fletcher is no stranger to fist fights, but when he bloodies the nose of the obnoxious son of Port Beaufort’s customs agent, the local magistrate offers Adam two choices: jail or an apprenticeship.
Choosing the latter, he soon finds himself bound apprentice to a reclusive old man with a secret, colorful past. Although Adam is less … secret, colorful past. Although Adam is less than thrilled about his new situation, when he is asked to spy on his master as a suspected smuggler, he has to decide where his loyalties lie. Will he perform his civic duty to the Crown, or will he do whatever is necessary to protect the old man, possibly putting even his own family in danger?
Secrets will be revealed, loyalties will be questioned, betrayals will be uncovered, and a young man’s character will be put to the test in The Smuggler’s Gambit.
The Smuggler’s Gambit is the first book in the Adam Fletcher Adventure Series of historical fiction novels. If you like fast-moving adventures, impetuous young heroes, suspense-filled plots, and a dash of romance, then you’ll love Sara Whitford’s entertaining series!

An enjoyable read.
A great historical mystery.
I didn’t expect a book about life in America before the revolution, and in North Carolina besides. Good read worth the time…
liked the story, didn’t realize it was beginning of a series. kind of left you hanging
Going along on Adam’s adventures is a really good time! He’s young and naive making the mistakes of youth with the best of intentions. It’s a lot of fun!
Ready to read next one
Loved the old school world of this book, and the references even to Robinson Caruso. I very much enjoyed the plot, twists, and story-line. A very entertaining story with great characters with many area’s for future growth.
Original setting & plot.
I thought this was an interesting well-written book. I deducted a star because It just ended, leaving several plot lines unresolved. Obvious that this is the first of a series but I still think it should stand alone and end with some sort of resolution.
Really good book. Looking forward to the rest of the series !
This was entertaining, had adventure and held my attention. The characters were believable and not too complicated. I would read this author again.
Easy to read, enjoyable story, happy outcome. I recommend this to anyone looking for a satisfying read.
Nice to read a little history!
I believe the most interesting part of the book were the characters and their interaction. It was a bit of a breath holder and interesting.
I liked the historical setting and the dimensions of the characters. There was very little suspense, but enough of a mystery to keep me reading.
I didn’t want it to end.
Great historical and geographical fiction.
Very enjoyable!! I like the “chess moves”. Good story and underlying mystery.
I loved the story line and the historical time frame of the story. Great read.
I like historical fiction and this was a quick read in that genre.
