Port Beaufort, North Carolina – May 1765
Seventeen-year-old Adam Fletcher is no stranger to fist fights, but when he bloodies the nose of the obnoxious son of Port Beaufort’s customs agent, the local magistrate offers Adam two choices: jail or an apprenticeship.
Choosing the latter, he soon finds himself bound apprentice to a reclusive old man with a secret, colorful past. Although Adam is less … secret, colorful past. Although Adam is less than thrilled about his new situation, when he is asked to spy on his master as a suspected smuggler, he has to decide where his loyalties lie. Will he perform his civic duty to the Crown, or will he do whatever is necessary to protect the old man, possibly putting even his own family in danger?
Secrets will be revealed, loyalties will be questioned, betrayals will be uncovered, and a young man’s character will be put to the test in The Smuggler’s Gambit.
The Smuggler’s Gambit is the first book in the Adam Fletcher Adventure Series of historical fiction novels. If you like fast-moving adventures, impetuous young heroes, suspense-filled plots, and a dash of romance, then you’ll love Sara Whitford’s entertaining series!

Loved the characters. Looking to read the next one.
I’m looking forward to reading more in this series
I liked it so much I bought the second book. Love the story, characters, and holds my attention.
I really liked this book. The characters kept you interested – the plot was not my usual romance book but I was captivated from the start. A bit of a ‘who done it’. No scenes with bad language or detailed sex – so you won’t be uncomfortable reading it. I am not sure what drew me to the book but I am glad I made the choice.
Great book
This was not only informative of what life was like in colonial America, but told the story of former pirates, and the families they loved. It has a love story, but that wasn’t the main story. I bought the whole series for this book, I enjoyed it that much.
Liked it well enough bought the #2 book in series
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting and unpredictable with believable characters. Very well written.
I was caught up in the book from the first page. I surely recommend it for everyone to read. I think whatever your favorite type book, you will enjoy this one!
Loved this book with great characters and a plot that had twists and turns, keeping me guessing. You won’t be sorry if you choose to read it.
This book gives a view of what life could have been like in times long ago. The characters were well thought out and what they went through is very believable.
I enjoyed it very much. ell written, colorful characters and good descriptions of people and times and the village.
This book is very entertaining and makes my heart beat fast in places, like when Adam is hiding a warehouse and the bad guys are also there! He barely escapes, and you feel just as scared as he did!! Good characters and you really see why they do what they do and get into the predicaments they do!
Excellent. Gives some insight to the way perception is not always the truth. And trust can be so easily misplaced. Also interesting to see how an apprenticeship can be the best and worst.
Great story and you felt like you really were in the time period setting for the story.
A great adventure for middle grade to adult. LInda
