Tobias Gamble knew from a young age precisely the kind of woman he was going to make his. She was not going to be like his mother. She was going to be like the mother he claimed. In other words, she was going to be just right. And when Toby returns to his hometown of Matlock, Kentucky and claps eyes on Adeline Forrester, he knows she’s the one.The problem is, his brother Johnny has a new … Johnny has a new girlfriend. And Addie is her sister. Last, Toby would do nothing to hurt Johnny’s chance at happiness.
Toby hangs around town to get to know the woman Johnny fell in love with. He also hangs around to get to know Addie.
But he’s fallen hard, and he knows the best thing for him—and Addie—is for him to leave.
Addie Forrester is thrilled her sister Eliza found a good, solid man. Johnny Gamble is the salt of the earth. The best guy in the world.
The best except for his brother, Toby.
Toby doesn’t know it, but Addie’s fallen hard too. He’s perfect, except for the fact that he’s hands off and it’s torture, being friends with Toby when she wants so much more.
Addie also has a lot on her mind. She’s got bills to pay, her young son needs food, Christmas is coming and her job at the grocery store just isn’t cutting it.
Toby is steering clear of Addie. Addie is steering clear of Toby. But everyone around them knows this is the slow burn.
Because just like Eliza and Johnny, Addie and Toby were made for each other.

I have always attempted to give ‘star’ ratings on my completed reads, just as a tracking method for my titles that I have completed. I have unlimited packages for audio, kindle, and utilize the local/state library.
However, I do not check the ‘I recommend this book’ unless I am willing to reread a book and or a series.
[I read about 5-15 books a month through kindle, and I listen to about 15-30 books monthly]
I have a full life as a nurse, professor, wife, daughter [daughter in law], sister, and mother. I love to read and love a thousand other lives by turning the pages in countless books.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide a review. Happy reading 🙂
Slow Burn was seriously a really simmering HOT one! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read
Toby and Addie are completely attracted to each other and neither one of them are aware of that the other feels the way they do. Thus the reason for our simmering burn… You are going to love this one as we have a single mother and the Alpha protective best friend.
5 Slow Simmering Burn Stars!
I am one of Kristen Ashley’s biggest fans, so of course, I adored the last book in the Moonlight and Motor Oil series. It was a beautiful story about a woman who had been through so much turmoil in her life meeting a man who would protect and cherish her the way she deserved.
I have read almost all of the books by Kristen Ashley. Some of them several times.
She makes her characters stay in your heart!
The Slow Burn is book 2 in The Moonlight and Oil series written by the talented author Kristen Ashley. Another amazing book , don’t miss out and go one click this book. A captivating story full of drama, lots of emotion and a charming romance. This is Tobias Gamble and Adeline Forrester story and takes place in the small town of of Matlock, Kentucky!!! A sizzling hot read.
5 The Burn May Be Slow BUT It’s SO WORTH IT Stars!!!
This is only my second Kristen Ashley book and once again, I’ve experienced her words via audiobook and I’m again blown away by what a masterful author she is. This book is the second book in her Moonlight and Motor Oil Series and not knowing this when I downloaded the book, I can say with all honesty it can be read/listened to as a standalone. Having said this, I’m definitely going to be listening to the first book so I can get Izzy and Johnny’s full story.
This is Toby and Addy’s book and these two are amazing together. Their pull to each other was strong from the very beginning but for reasons that we come to understand they fought that attraction….until they couldn’t anymore. And when they move from “just friends” to a true couple their lives all change and only for the good.
Addy is essentially a single mother to the cutest little boy Brooks that plays a major role in this book because if Toby is with Addy, he’s with Brooks too. And the love these two have for each other, this little boy and their family is breathtakingly beautiful. Both Addy and Toby didn’t have great childhoods so the family they have is not necessarily blood related with the exception of their siblings, whose story we get in book one.
Ms. Ashley takes us on quite the journey with this couple. There’s such a burning intensity when they’re physically together, but better than that, is how they love each other…completely, totally and with no reservations! I loved how this book took us on the ride from when they became a couple to the ultimate HEA.
There were so many moments that I laughed out loud, got frustrated or squirmed in my driver’s seat of my car driving on the turnpike because both Ms. Bloom and Mr. Greenfield bring so much life and vivacity to the characters of this book. It’s true that an audiobook is make or break because of the narrators and this book is a DEFINITIVE WIN with these two doing the narration. They both do a fabulous job with all the secondary characters voices and intonations. I felt every emotion possible while listening to this book.
Ms. Ashley has written a story that is engaging with characters that are well developed and made me want to be in this small town in Kentucky. I’m hoping there’s more coming in this series because I’m definitely not done wanting to be in this Moonlight and Motor Oil world!
I love Kristen Ashley. This was the 2nd book in her Moonlight and Motor Oil series. She writes alpha males who know how to cherish and take care of their women. There’s usually a little excitement along the way. Some hot sex scenes too. If you like books like that, the. Give this book a try.
Great follow up in the Moonlight and Motor Oil Series! Two brothers are seriously affected by the leaving of their mother when they were very young and the death of their father. This is the younger brother’s story as compared to the older brother’s. He happened to have a run in with his mother and tensions run very high. He is extremely bitter and angry. Great characters and role building! Very angsty! Tension gripping!
A fantastic audio, but…
I finished listening to The Slow Burn on my way to work this morning and I was left very troubled. There was a scene towards the end that had me completely flabbergasted. I can’t tell you what happened in that scene because it would be a HUGE spoiler. When you listen to certain words you can’t always tell the right context, while reading makes it clearer. I came home and opened up my Kindle version (that I had preordered) read the same section and it all made sense. I’m glad I got the opportunity to confirm because if I hadn’t, it would have been bothering me FOREVER. In some cases, reading just makes more sense.
Reading or listening to a Kristen Ashley generally leaves me in my reading happy place. The Slow Burn took me on an emotional journey with Tobey and Addie. There were plenty of highs and a few lows to deal with too. Sure, this was a “slow burn” but luckily we didn’t have to wade through the “slow burn” to get the good stuff. I’m not necessarily talking about the sexy times, I’m talking about the good stuff being them fighting their battles together. Independence has its place, but a partnership will always work better when you work as a team.
Addie has just ended her relationship with the father of her child and she’s looking for a new path. Tobey has been on a meandering path for years, and now that his brother Johnny has settled, he’s thinking about settling too. Their first meeting was not under good circumstances but it did suck me in. Addie is vulnerable and Tobey is her protector…YIPPEE!! I love it that when she was at her worst, she finds the best.
The Moonlight and Motor Oil series gave us two stories that packed a punch. Both Johnny and Tobey are far from angels when we first meet them, but it doesn’t take long to love them. Izzy and Addie have had their fair share of hard times but they’re the kind of women who makes the most of what they’ve got. Both couples have pasts that were bumpy but their strength was in how they moved on from their rocky rides. I loved that two sisters fell in love with two brothers.
I liked the audio version of The Slow Burn but I didn’t completely love it. It flowed well and was easy to listen to most of the time, it’s just that I prefer Stella Blooms narration and wished she’d done it solo. She’s just so easy to listen to.
I loved all the characters I met in The Slow Burn and was sad to say goodbye at the end. The story flowed in a way that made it easy to believe that Tobey, Addie and Brooklyn (Addie’s son) would be together forever. Addie was a fantastic mother and I loved her fierce protectiveness. Tobey, while it took me a while to warm up to, ended up being a strong, sexy and dedicated hero I could admire. This story was fun, sexy, emotional and at times heartbreaking. Just the right mix of emotions.
The Slow Burn was everything I was hoping for and more. I definitely recommend.
5 Star review of The Slow Burn (Moonlight & Motor Oil Book 2) by Kristen Ashley
Audio Review:
I know this is hard to believe but I have never listened to or read a book from Kristen Ashley. I have no idea why that is and be assured I am going to rectify that as soon as I can.
This is a friends to lovers story, a slow burn as the tittle implies that ticked every one of my boxes. Stella Bloom and Lance Greenfield, the narrators did a great job bringing this story to life and I thoroughly enjoyed their performance.
Toby and Addi are two halves of a whole and the interaction between them and the secondary characters was on point. This was a story that I did not want to end and I loved every single minute of it.The characters were captivating and easy to relate to.
One click this one I don’t think you will be disappointed.
I’m going to preface this to say I’m a huge Kristen Ashley fan. She’s will always be a favorite author of mine and she is definitely a fabulous woman! That said, I do agree with a lot of readers that KA has meandered away from the exciting books that made me fall in love with her and stay up all night just to finish. Her last few books are definitely fun and entertaining and heartwarming, but they are nowhere near the awesomeness of the Rock Chicks and the Colorado Mountains series. These more recent books are mostly outside drama.
However, while mostly great first reads, and compared to other authors, they’re still a good four star read. Toby and Addie were awesome, the characters were awesome, everything was awesome. Just no action, no drama, no mystery, no conflict. I do miss the old Kristen Ashley.
What a beautiful book! I loved all of these characters and this series was wonderful. I can’t recommend this enough.
It is a must read.
OMG people! Grab your tissues because you are gonna not only laugh your behind off at the banter between these two but this book had so many emotions in it that I can’t even begin to explain how much it made me feel! I love this author and love most of her books but this book is one of her most recent that went beyond expectations on how much it made me feel! Like, whoa! Wait! Let me grab my drink before I continue on type of feel!
So much love and emotions not only with the main characters but with most of the side characters that made you feel like you weren’t just observing them but you were welcomed into the fold. This is gonna be a reread for me because I am so hooked!
Pure Kristen Ashley–a delight for existing fans, a real treat for readers new to KA.
Richly layered with warmth, romance, family and friends. From the first page I was hooked.
Lovely, heart breaking and wonderful all rolled into one fabulous story
So loved this book. Single mom dealing with a loser ex. She has a sweet boy. Then a man who wants her but knows she is off limits. They both grew up different. One poor on who was not. Both come together to learn to love each other. Threw ups and downs threw the whole book they had each other no matter what. Kristen did it again another amazing book!!!!
Holy Wow!! I do not know if I have the proper words to describe this book. There was no suspense, no major problems, and no heavy action, but man was there love!! Toby was so swoon worthy and heartfelt , with just enough alpha Male in him. Addie was strong and stubborn, but so full of love!! KA really does well with this single parent story and building a community that you are able to fall in love with. The narration of this story was perfect!! This was a complete and total 5 star read for me!!!
Kristen Ashley is my favorite author of all time. I have read every book she has published. The Slow Burn was an incredible story. Addie and Toby’s relationship was a slow sweet journey to one another. Addie is a Bad Ass and she was made for Toby. The Slow Burn will put you through the emotional wringer, I laughed, I cried it has all the feels. I loved every word of Slow Burn this book is Five Plus Stars. It is one of my Top Books of 2019. I am not giving anything away, you need to read The Hookup first for the other characters to make sense. Kristen Ashley does it again, she gives us another incredible book. I loved The Slow Burn, it will be a book that I will read multiple times.
I don’t know how to explain a Kristen Ashley book beyond the fact that every single one is a full experience. Her flawless writing never fails to deliver a story that not only takes over your world but stays with you permanently. The Slow Burn is one of the best in those regards. Tobias and Addie’s story is one that works it’s way completely into your heart the second you start it. I swear, the amount emotion that was pulled from me with these two was nothing short of amazing.
I cried my eyes out with them both from complete beauty and from heartbreak. I laughed with them. My heart felt like it was going to burst from the love between them. What exists between them is our magic. As with all of Kristen Ashley’s characters these two have so many layers and such depth to them there’s no one word to describe them. They’re so real it feels like you are truly part of their world watching their lives unfold, experiencing all they go through, and feeling every bit of it.
This book has all the class, family, beautiful alpha men, and women who take no guff as any other Kristen Ashley novel.
Toby and Addie’s story is beautiful, wound tight with Johnny and Eliza, Charlie and Deanna, Margot and Dave – family as family were meant to be.
She was able to give closure to more than one section of The Hookup I didn’t even realize needed closure. A beautiful story with a marvelous ending. I’m so thankful she continues to share her gifts with the world. #RockOn
