Lies, lies, lies. Everyone in this story has secrets and is holding back something. Natalie and her team desperately wants to solve the murder of 14 years old Roxy. Two of the suspects are two brothers, owning a nightclub and the house Roxy was found in. But there are so many things not adding up and Natalie really has to up her game.
I love this series and highly recommend everyone to give it a try. This are the kind of book , once started it’s impossible to stop reading and put the book down. Can’t wait for more books in this series.
Sometimes when an author gets a few books into a series it can start to feel stale. That is definitely NOT the case here! Detective Natalie Ward and her unit remain as sharp as ever. While she and her co-workers try to uncover why a young girl died in a mysterious fire, their personal lives come into play and make an impact on their investigation. I love the way this author seamlessly weaves the professional and personal aspects together to create a tight plot that had me turning pages long into the night. Another great installment to the series. For a full review, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks Fiction Reviews. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author for a complimentary, pre-release digital ARC of the book.
I am in love with the Detective Natalie Ward Series! Not only is every book incredible, but the characters are so realistic that you feel you could be one of the team, working alongside them and feeling the same pressure to find the suspects. This time it is someone who burns down a house of two obnoxious club owners, which is bad enough, but the culprit also killed a teenage girl who was in the house. Why was she there? Did the killer know of her presence? How is she connected to the homeowners? There are many questions and few answers for DI Natalie Ward and her team.
I think I enjoyed this book so much because of how frustrating the case becomes. There’s no shortage of suspects and everyone seems to be lying about something. Soon, more bodies are found, and while they are clearly connected, the police can’t figure out how. There are no lucky breaks to be had – this case needs good old fashioned detective work and endless questioning of everyone involved. Add to that the pressure that Natalie faces at home with her dishonest husband and typically infuriating teenagers and you just want to collapse right along with her after every long day!
This book is for anyone who enjoys a good mystery and great storytelling. Whether you have read the previous books in this series or not, you can enjoy this one and become as obsessed as I am. I can’t wait for the next one!
Cathy isn’t too worried when her 14-year-old daughter, Roxie, leaves to spend the night with her best friend. She still wasn’t worried when she did not come home the next morning.
She and Roxie had had an argument before she agreed for her to spend the night away. She truly regrets that decision when Detective Natalie Ward knocks on her door and informs her that Roxie was found murdered in an expensive home across town. Owned by two brothers, the house was set afire.
Why was Roxie there? No one in the family seems to know these two brothers ..and they deny knowing what she was doing in their house. None of her friends can tell the police anything .. or they don’t want to.
When investigating, Natalie finds a second victim..and then a third … 2 uncooperative suspects …. a 3rd suspect with an attitude… and many people harboring secrets.
This is a well-written complex story filled with an unending list of suspects. The story moves at a rapidly moving pace with memorable characters. I like the blend of professional and personal as Natalie ponders her marriage and her attraction to another man .. a colleague. Although 4th in a series, this is easily read as a stand alone, but as usual I do recommend starting at the beginning.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I started this book with an upbeat attitude but finished it thinking its finally over. I’d read reviews about it being full of tension and nail biting and I am seriously wondering if I read the same book?
First of all, the characters aren’t very likeable and you need to care or wonder about them. Roxy and her mum do not come across as nice or even interesting. The book makes it clear that if you are poor and live in a bad area, then you lack common decency, education, and take drugs or sell drugs. Realistic, maybe accurate but also depressing. Then Roxy, Ellie, Habib, Tucker, Seth, Charlie, Paul, Gavin and etc…so many characters with so many secrets. And the place that she is found in and the background on the two brothers owning it…the story goes all over the place and just makes it confusing. Then you throw in the homelife of lead detective Natalie which didn’t help.
Maybe it’s just me, the book seemed long and the detectives kept following different people without really getting a firm grasp….and where the heck was the tension?? I could and did easily put this book down. I struggled to finish it. If the mother and daughter were introduced with more detail and developed better, maybe it’d help. Alot of the characters weren’t memorable and were not evil or scary enough to promote tension, fear or a curiosity to investigate. I did not feel an urgency from the detectives or the people involved ….it did not seem as if more murders were around the corner or that people should lock their doors and be nervous. Did not live up to the hype.
