I found it very interesting, especially that Michelangelo was able to put in so many of his personal feelings about the subject while working right in front of the Pope. This is a book you MUST read before you go to Italy and see the actual place!
This book was fun to read and very interesting. I enjoyed the author’s thesis and systematic support. It turned intrigue from 500 years ago into page-turning excitement. The brilliant descriptions and artistic support for the argument were dulled for me by my reading this as an e-book. I recommend it, but encourage a full-color reading of a physical copy.
excellent topic which I never knew and did not even appreciate. Is making me research more and more. Awesome details and photos.
Super interesting. Who knew what symbolic genius Michaelangelo was
Great info about Michelangelo.
A must read for art lovers and theologians, or an interest in the artist!
Having always been in awe of Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel ceiling, this book was so revealing of the artist’s life and others’ influence on his thinking, and of the subtle digs he painted into his masterwork. Was well worth downloading. Have also gifted an e-version of this to relatives traveling to Rome next year.
Interesting insights on what Michelangelo was trying to accomplish when painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Fascinating story of a great work of art – and the bigger-than-life personalities in the Italian Renaissance.
A lot of “theory” about how this invoked the Jewish Kabal and mysticism.
Provides valuable information of the past and fascinating mystery of the present!
This book is loaded with stories about Michelangelo, the Italian sculptor who spent four and one half years painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, as well as other Renaissance artists. The authors also include stories of the lives of churchmen, poets, rulers, and writers.
After the Sistine’s ceiling was restored details of the frescoes could be more clearly seen. Michelangelo had included unexpected depictions which expressed his views of individuals including himself, religion, and the Church. No paintings of the Holy Family are included in those on the ceiling. All the paintings are of Old Testament figures.
This is a fascinating book. I’m still not quite sure it’s completely true, but paints an absolutely original understanding of what Michaelangelo painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Will never look at it again without thinking about all that was covered in this very unusual book.
assertions without support
Very interesting explanation of how and why the ceiling of the Sistine is decorated as it is and why the various figures were chosen and what their significance is to the over all story presented there.
Great preface to Sistine Chapel visit.
Some great information but very biased, worth the read anyway
Just ok
A different look at the influences impacting the Sistine chapel paintings
This is a fascinating book—well documented and well written. The authors spent a lot of time with the art in the Sistine Chapel and discovered many symbols of Michaelangelo’s feelings toward the Catholic Church and some of the clergy of his day.
Well worth reading.
Brings to light more of the hideous history of the Catholic church.
