Sin is a hard man caught in a crumbling city filled with crime. Drifting through life, he takes on mercenary jobs by day and drinks away the memories of a happier time at night. Life has no color and little direction until he saves a gorgeous young man from a vicious attack. Resisting the determined, feisty, and seemingly innocent young man presents the first challenge Sin has had in ages. Eastyn … Eastyn brings brightness and humor to Sin’s previously dark and grim world, but there’s far more to Eastyn than he lets on.
Eastyn is trapped, a victim of circumstance, and he wants only to find a way out. He gambles everything to bend one dangerous man to his will in order to escape another. Falling in love was never part of that plan, but with Sin, he suddenly has the power to become the person he has always wanted but never dared to be.
In a fractured city poised between order and chaos, two men find the chance of a love stronger than the evil that surrounds them. But claiming and keeping that love will be the riskiest thing either of them will ever have to do. Because Eastyn is unlike anyone Sin has ever met before, and he might be the very thing needed to save Sin from himself.
The Sinner and the Liar is a 107k word gritty yet humorous romance set in a city recovering from war. It has two heroes who refuse to give up, snarky dialogue, and a love that is strong enough to overcome even the most impossible of odds.

Out of all of Alice’s books I think this one may be my favorite. The story was gritty. The main characters Eastyn and Sin had to fight and claw their way to a happy ending. Sin is a man who is just existing, he doesn’t care one bit if he lives or dies until a beautiful young man pretty much bullies his way into Sin’s life and eventually his heart. I think the thing I love most about this book was Eastyn. Yeah he had the humor thing going for him but he kept looking for others to rescue him but he eventually comes to the realization that he can save himself and I loved that. Very good book. Highly, highly recommend!!
I almost didn’t read this because I don’t really care for books set in this kind of world. But I’m glad I did. The characters were interesting to follow and there were a couple of surprises I didn’t see coming.
This book is a departure from the In Darkness series, so don’t go into it expecting the same comedic love story. This book is intense, a little dark, and a complete suspenseful thriller of a ride. This book is set after a third world war; a dystopian future of corruption and misery.
Sin has basically washed his hands of all things good in life. He’s a former cop that is now basically a gun for hire. He has no qualms about taking a life; because he doesn’t really value his own. But, he’s in a unique position in this walled city of chaos: the good guys need him, and the bad guys want him. He’s basically a law unto himself.
In comes Eastyn, the liar. For reasons that are eventually explained, he devises a plan to use Sin for his own personal gain. He needs out of a situation that was beyond his control, but his only hope resides in the man who he has to manipulate in order to even meet. But, he takes his chances with this dangerous man, because he is his only hope.
The city is a civil war zone between the police and a gang run by a sadistic maniac. Unfortunately, said maniac happens to be the most powerful man in the city. Sin is the only man standing between the two sides, because he still does jobs for the police, and Sawyer, the maniac, wants him to join forces with his men.
Although the book is filled with violence, fear, and morally incomprehensible goings on, I did find myself laughing out loud at some of the banter between the two MCs. I don’t think Ms. Winters is capable of writing a book without at least some flippant remarks or actions; and the acquiring of a pet.
Overall, I absolutely loved this story. The characters are well developed and the world building is creative and dark. While the relationship between the MCs is not your typical romance, it is sweet in its own way.
Happy reading!
