A sinner’s only hope is true love in this passionate new novel in J.R. Ward’s #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.Syn has kept his side hustle as a mercenary a secret from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. When he takes another hit job, he not only crosses the path of the vampire race’s new enemy, but also that of a half-breed in danger of dying during her transition. Jo … during her transition. Jo Early has no idea what her true nature is, and when a mysterious man appears out of the darkness, she is torn between their erotic connection and the sense that something is very wrong.
Fate anointed Butch O’Neal as the Dhestroyer, the fulfiller of the prophecy that foresees the end of the Omega. As the war with the Lessening Society comes to a head, Butch gets an unexpected ally in Syn. But can he trust the male—or is the warrior with the bad past a deadly complication?
With time running out, Jo gets swept up in the fighting and must join with Syn and the Brotherhood against ultimate evil. In the end, will love true prevail…or was the prophecy wrong all along?

I so loved this book.
I love J R Ward and have read all her Brotherhood books. She’s branched off to include the B of B’s. They’re different. Miss the interaction between the main characters. Bruce and V, are there for the end of the Lessening Society. The church scene with the Scribe Virgin ties up loose ends. Of course, you gotta love Lassiter!! An there’s a new foe in town, natch…
I love this series. Have been waiting to find out what Ms. ward had planned for Jo Early for three books now. So excited that we finally get to see her life work out and one of the bastards be happy too. I hate reviews that spoil the story so that is all I will say. Except Enjoy .
Outstanding addition to the Black Dagger series. The end of one era and the beginning of another.
This was not my favorite Black Dagger book. I had a difficult time liking Syn or feeling any empathy for him. Which is a shame, as I LOVE J.R. Ward’s books.
I liked some parts, and I disliked some parts.
The Good: Wrath, the Scribe Virgin, V.
The Okay: Syn & Jo (wish there was more emotion), Lassiter
The Bad: The ending of the Omega was kind of anticlimactic. New conflict of Lassiter vs. Devina which means this series continues and after so many books, it really should end. Butch and V AGAIN. Too many enemy scenes.
So definitely 3 stars.
The Sinner finally gives an unexpected twist to the conclusion to the prophecy setting up for more to come.
I really liked finally having a story line centered around Jo Early, revisiting some of her past memories.
This the latest in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and it is as awesome as the rest of the books. I must admit I have read most of them at least eight times. Yes, they are that fabulous!
Another solid world building addition to the BDB storyline. No spoilers but answers are given to long standing mysteries and the series has expanded to explore some new directions. Butch and V are fab as usual. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I can still remember when I received my copy of Dark Lover. I was lucky enough to receive it from the author and I was thrilled to try this new paranormal author. When her books started coming out paranormal was so hot it seemed like that’s all I read.
Paranormal for me isn’t as popular but Ward has kept going strong. A testament to her writing.
I might have been bad at keeping up and unfortunately need to go back and pick up a few books I’ve not read but the ones I have I’ve really enjoyed including this one.
I can always count on feeling something when reading a book by Ward. There is something about her writing that draws me to her books even when she doesn’t hit the mark for me. I’m glad to say that this one did. I really enjoyed it and it’s the last book I read or should I say able to read since being locked away inside my home.
I am so glad that we got back to the Dhestroyer storyline. So much happened in this book and I really loved most of it. At times I wanted to know more about Syn and his past. At times I wondered about their romance but the times I felt it made up for what I felt I was missing.
I really enjoy both Syn and Jo and thought they were great characters. What I always love about Ward’s books is the fact that you get a taste of past/present characters in her books. I need the visit from the past to keep feeling the story. So much happens that I’d love to talk about but I hate giving to much away. All I can say is that I enjoyed reading the story and where it went in the series.
As a whole, this was the perfect addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I think you will really enjoy this story and want more. I’m looking forward to more from this series. Any of you read her? For a chance to win a copy enter below.
I love all of JR Ward’s BDB & have read all of them for the last 15 years!!!!!Hope she keeps them coming. Need my BDB hit every year!!
BDB are my favorite books to read! J. R. Ward has a way with words! Incredible! The Sinner did not disappoint! I cant wait for the next book!
I can’t believe I did it but I did. I finished The Sinner on March 26 and immediately restarted the book from page one. The book was packed full of so much goodness that I honestly couldn’t absorb it all in just one read. I couldn’t move on without visiting the Mansion one last time.
For me the changes in Syn were long over due. The male has been tormented for centuries. The male can only survive by giving into his evil, killing. His extra curricular activities will be his salvation if he survives.
My curiosity has been sated some what. Do remember the heel prints in the snow? Do you remember that horrible book of evil? Grab the sinner to find out some of the answers that you have. You might not like them. Be careful what you wish for.
Jo Early sticks her nose it the wrong place this time. She no longer has to just worry about the Brotherhood. She doesn’t know it but they have been keeping any eye on her since first contact. Her time is coming. Before she reaches her transition she will have to survive the mob and the hit taken out on her. Her savior will blow your mind. Well, at least it it blew my mind.
Now the most important question. How long do I have to wait for book 19? Who will be the hero in the next book? This gal is wishing she was a cat. The curiosity is going to kill me.
When I opened this book I had my fingers crossed, hoping we were going to get the old BDB feel.
Did I get that feel? Hell no. I got 60 plus chapters that could have been pared way down. There are so many chapters that have nothing to do with the main characters that I could have done without. Where are the rest of the characters? Butch and V, as much as I love them, aren’t the only characters I want to see.
The Dhestroyer prophecy was a huge let down after it was all said and done.
Spoilers…..
Devina, well shit, a blast from the evil past and the Fallen Angels. Holy shit, OMG and anything else I can think of.
Butch, still as loyal as ever and still unsure about his roll as the Dhestroyer.
Jo, the half-breed a character that has come up in a few books, finally gets her story, even though her story seems to be an afterthought.
The final battle? I pictured something totally different and I’m not sure how I feel about it. Although it does answer one question it raises more.
OMG!!! There are not enough words to say how much I loved this one. Finally the end of the war, but now Devina. Wow!!! I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Syn… I loved him and Jo. He was so twisted up inside. She just wanted to know who she was, and he gave her that. I was holding my breath at the end. I was worried about all of them. The males in Jo’s life giving him the clear to love and take care of her…
V!!! I love V! So, getting more of him and Butch! I won’t lie I was worried up until the end. I was white knuckling my Kindle wondering about the end.
Lassiter and The Curt Schilling!!! Loved that scene. Do I think that V will still get him back? YEP! I can’t wait. Plus Lassiter and Devina… I can’t wait to see what comes of that.
Wrath’s visit with the Scribe Virgin… I cried. That scene was amazing. I am so ready for the next book. I hope the Black Dagger Brotherhood books never end. My all time fave in the Paranormal Romance.
This is an Audible review.
I never got a warm fuzzy feel from the Band of Bastards, always felt they where rude, crude and uncouth so starting this story I wasn’t expecting a lot. I was also kind of dreading this story I felt maybe we where nearing the end of one of my favorite series. This story gave a new insight to Syn one of the band, Jo Early and his slow burn romance with her, who, (no spoilers) has a much deeper connection with the BDB. We get to know first hand the once long time threat to the BDM and all of the race has been eliminated but not as it was originally perceived and a new challenge is in the horizon, in the way of a character from The Fallen Angel series, again (no spoilers). So my fear of the end hopefully Is null and void hooray.
Jim Frangione who I honestly feel helps make these stories and characters real for me, did a fantastic job narrating.
THE SINNER is the nineteenth instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD paranormal, romance series. This is Band of Bastards mercenary and vampire Syn, and journalist Jo Early’s story line. THE SINNER can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and history as THE SINNER ends this particular arc of the series.
Told from several third person perspectives including but not limited to Syn, Jo, Butch and Devina, THE SINNER follows several paths -the building relationship between Syn and Jo; Butch’s destiny as The Dhestroyer; the reappearance of Devina and the revelation of her true identiy, and the inevitable end of the war with the Omega but the beginning of another.
Journalist Jo Early has been investigating the paranormal including the possibility of dragons and vampires but our heroine never expected to come face to face with a man who may or may not have been sent to kill her. As well as investigating the supernatural, Jo begins looking into a series of brutal killings that are linked to the mob, a investigation that place Jo in the direct line of fire. Syn considers himself of mercenary for hire. Working with the Brotherhood, as well as taking side jobs in an effort to quell his need to kill, Syn finds himself facing his future when a half-breed vampire, just entering her transition, is Syn’s fated mate. What ensues is the building but heart breaking relationship between Jo and Syn, and the potential fall-out when secrets and lies are revealed.
Meanwhile, Brian ‘Butch’ O’Neal aka the Dhestroyer knows his destiny to take down the Omega is about to come to fruition. Believing he will meet his maker, Butch struggles knowing he may not survive the upcoming battle, a battle meant to end the war.
The relationship between Jo and Syn struggles in the face of preconceived notions and Syn’s battle with the demons from his past. Jo suspects Syn is one of the mythical vampires but has no idea that her fate is in the hands of the BDB.
THE SINNER is a detailed and complex story line that ends this particular arc of the series, and sets the stage for the next. As the Band of Bastards begin to find their own happily ever afters, a promise of war is on the horizon, a promise that comes with a surprising revelation. The reader learns about Jo Early’s heritage and her connections to the BDB. We are witness to the Dhestroyer’s purpose, and the end of the Omega. The premise is entertaining and edgy; the characters are broken but spirited; the romance is tense and not without some issues including secrets and lies.
Never Has It Felt Better To Sin…

What’s this book about? (I’m trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
This is Syn and Jo Early’s book. Butch and Vishous make a lot of cameos. Something happens with the Omega prophecy. Just… Another regular BDB book.
I don’t like paranormal romance anymore; I only read my yearly dose of it when J. R. Ward publishes her Black Dagger Brotherhood book. I’ve loved and cherished most; I’ve only hated two. Here, I find myself loving it. Every year, I start my new BDB book and I finish it within hours. Poor choice since I have to live with the fact that I need to wait another year for the next one. Every year, I vow to re-read all the books. This year, I didn’t. HOWEVER, this year is the year that I truly should have. Dealing with the omega prophecy and all, things went down. I was more curious about Syn and Jo than I was about Butch and Vishous’ shenanigans and that says something because I really like V and Butch. Jo was laid out splendidly; her backstory was admirable. I liked her sass and tenacity. She didn’t take sh*t from anyone. She had great chemistry with Syn. I enjoyed reading about him and I wish that certain aspects of him had been dealt with in even more detail. He was a lovely guy; I don’t know why everyone was out to get him so hard, spoken like a true bibliophile. I confess that I usually skip all the italic and Lesser parts of the BDB books. Here, I’ve confessed it. JUDGE ME. LOL. Syn had me reading the italic parts! What a wonder. I still skipped the lesser parts LOL.
I recommend this read to the day one BDB readers since here we get one of the major plot lines resolved, Butch & V lovers and rare strong heroine in the Black Dagger Brotherhood universe admirers. Jo Early is unlike the other ladies!
Syn was amazing. I absolutely love this series, and each book just seems to get better. Syn was a throwback to the original Brothers in the way he was written. It really reminded me of the first books.
Syn and Jo were perfect in their imperfection. And let me tell you if I could hug that male, I would.
There was so much going on in this book but a major one was Devina. Which if you haven’t read the Fallen Angel series, you should do so. Because my only real issue with this book was that she, and what she is truly capable of, is not properly explained.
I loved all of the time spent with Butch, as the war with the Lessoning Society comes to an end. Those moments between he and V were priceless.
Can I just mention the jolly rancher? We get to know the Bastards better in this book, and it really makes me want to know more about them. All of them.
As usual it will be a long year long wait for Lover Unveiled and the new Brother we haven’t met yet, Sahvage.
I love diving into a new Black Dagger Brotherhood book, it’s always like coming home. Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres, but it’s hard to find a good solid series from it lately. I love that J.R. Ward is a consistent one for me.
I really enjoy these books no matter what the story line is, main characters are, side characters, etc. I love reading, and these books here, they are always worth the time. Would I enjoy seeing some of the other brothers featured besides Butch, V, Rhage? Sure, I can’t deny that. That doesn’t take any ratings away for me just because of this. The reason I did mark it down was because I miss the work, the angst, the CHASE of the romance. I miss gasping when they bond with their mate. We all know it’s coming, but the way that it does or the when is the surprise. I miss the surprise. The bonding is coming to easy, and a bit to insta love for me. I can not stand insta love. It takes away from my favorite part of romance books – the chase. I love reading about them falling, there is no falling when it is insta love. Do we all remember how long Blay and Quinn’s story arc took? That was perfection. That was everything. I’m not saying each couple needs their story to take several books, but it could take longer than the insta love aspect does.
Besides all of that, I enjoy these books. I’ll be anticipating the next one as much as I always do. This series is still something that I enjoy, even all these books later.
