Hot on the heels of his huge bestseller, The Wailing Wind, Tony Hillerman brings back Chee and Leaphorn in a puzzling new mystery The body of a well-dressed fellow, all identification missing, is found hidden under the brush on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. The local FBI takes over from the Navajo Police Sergeant Jim Chee, and quickly has the case snatched all the way to Washington. … Washington. Washington proves uncooperative and the case is deadended. When Joe Leaphorn, the “legendary lieutenant” of Hillerman’s Navajo Tribal Police discovers that Washington officials hid the body’s identity, lines surprisingly connect to the case he’s working on at exotic game ranch. A photograph she sends him tells Chee she is facing a danger he doesn’t understand.
Hillerman produces a galaxy of unusual characters in this compelling novel that is sure to confound readers until the very last page.

Vintage Hillerman! Good story with realistic characters.
I like his writing and the information on Native Americans, good characters.
Tony Hillerman always a good read. This is one of the many of his books I have read and enjoyed. Very well researched
I loved the Hillerman series and read these as a follow on. Fun easy read.
I enjoy most of Tony Hillerman’s (and now his daughter’s continuations) novels, set in the areas of and around the Navajo Nation of NE AZ and NE NM primarily. His characters in the Navajo Tribal Police, the description of the geography, and that of Navajo culture and beliefs set these apart from similar crime novels. Thoroughly enjoyable read.
Really enjoyed this book, featuring Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito. The detectives begin from 3 different starting points and bring the convoluted paths together to solve the mystery! It makes for good reading!
I enjoy all of Tony Hillerman’s stories.
Love all of the Hillerman books!
Great southwest descriptions which help create the story line
A big Hillerman fan, but this was not his best. Just not much substance.
Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito are at it again. As always, we get some insight into Native American culture (primarily Navajo), but this one involves bad guys from Washington, drug smuggling and serious danger to Manuelito. Oh, and Chee finally gets up the nerve (if you’re a reader of the series, you’ll know. If you aren’t a series fan, I don’t …
It’s been years since i’ve Read books by this author. As a resident of Arizona I decided to read this one. I really can’t put a finger on why I don’t care for his books because they are my favorite type of book. The characters were developed, so that’s not why. But over all I just didn’t really care for it.
Continuation of the Jim Chee series keeps up her Dad’s good reads.
One of the best
Classic Hillerman story located in the Southwest. I enjoy all of his books.
Hillerman wrote great stories that you could see as the words unfold. The characters belong in a way that a lot don’t. Tony Hillerman is gone now but his daughter is taking up his writing legacy and doing a darned good job of it.
Tony Hillerman is a master storyteller with deep character profiles, long-lasting relationships that are tested by times trials and tribulations, and realistic plots steeped in Southwestern US geography and ethnic culture that are both touching and adventurous.
Holler an writes a good mystery. His characters are unique and realistic. I enjoy learning The cultures of the Southwest.
Ended too quickly.
Love both Hillermans!
