Hot on the heels of his huge bestseller, The Wailing Wind, Tony Hillerman brings back Chee and Leaphorn in a puzzling new mystery The body of a well-dressed fellow, all identification missing, is found hidden under the brush on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. The local FBI takes over from the Navajo Police Sergeant Jim Chee, and quickly has the case snatched all the way to Washington. … Washington. Washington proves uncooperative and the case is deadended. When Joe Leaphorn, the “legendary lieutenant” of Hillerman’s Navajo Tribal Police discovers that Washington officials hid the body’s identity, lines surprisingly connect to the case he’s working on at exotic game ranch. A photograph she sends him tells Chee she is facing a danger he doesn’t understand.
Hillerman produces a galaxy of unusual characters in this compelling novel that is sure to confound readers until the very last page.

All hillerman books are great
Another triumph for Hillerman. Oh that he were still with us. His knowledge of the Navajo ways was encyclopedic. His plots are realistic and entertaining. A truly miraculous writer.
Love Hillerman. One of my favorite authors
I’ve read several books by Tony Hillerman and liked every one of them!
love tony hillerman!!!!
Great story, skillful plot, and fascinating subtext about the ripoff of resources from Native American land.
I’ve read most of Hillerman’s books and find them most interesting as a glimpse into understanding the Navajo culture . When reading a series, I become interested in the characters and want to know more about their lives and what comes next. This story provides the next step of the Chee and Bernie romance as well as a pretty predictable mystery. …
Love Tony Hollean. Quick and easy read
Typical Hillerman; fast paced, hard to put down.
Tony Hillerman at his finest!
Always love Tony Hillerman
Nice to spend time with characters that are like old friends.
Love the insights into some Native cultures – good story too
I love Tony Hillerman’s books and his wife’s. They write about the Dine Natives, so if you aren’t into books about Natives you may not enjoy them as much as I. Regular murder mysteries but about the Native police solving them as they happen on Navaho land.
Classic Hillerman. Can’t go wrong!
I’ve been a Tony Hillerman forever. I have all his books in paper back but I’m building my Kindle library so I was happy to find this book to add to my collection. There’s a little romance but I like the window into the Navaho way of life.
Wonderful new style Tony Hillerman!
I’ve read & enjoyed everything Tony Hillerman has written. I am reading his daughter Anne’s books as they become available.
Another great by Tony Hillerman, like visiting with old friends
