I generally liked it and enjoyed the characters but it seemed to end better it really got started. If it’s a series, I would read the next one.
I enjoyed this book. It gave me the feel of what it might be like living in England in the mid to late 1930’s with Hitler on the rise in Germany.
I really enjoyed reading this historical mystery. The setting is in Pre-World War 2 England which really works well with the spy/mystery aspect of the story. My favorite character was the main character, Catherine. I love that she has the strength and courage to go against society rules to seek out happiness. I also like the supporting characters of Annie, Aunt Lydia, and Thomas all of which have strong likable personalities. This is a well-written book with well-paced suspense interwoven into the lives of these characters. This is a great start to a new series, the only thing I had a problem with was the prologue (I just kept getting distracted but the info it supplies comes into play later in the book) after I got past it I couldn’t put the book down. I really enjoyed the spy aspect of the mystery. I would recommend this book to historical and cozy mystery lovers alike.
I received this book from Netgallery. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.
Heroine in this page turner makes her own choices and ends up choosing to live an unconventional life.
Well written, good character development
very good historical fiction but with facts built in as well
Original story about a woman in a loveless marriage. Lots of twists and turns that kept my interest. Mrs Carlisle is no pushover. Enjoyed it.
There are some twists and turns you do not expect. Good book
I did not like the book. I thought it was poorly written. I do mot recommend it.
The Silent Woman by Terry Lynn Thomas is a thrilling story during World War II that is centered around espionage and intrigue that grabbed me from page one. The author did a great job in developing each of the characters so that readers will feel as though they really know them and are part of this incredibly interesting and dangerous journey. Without giving away any spoilers, readers will become captivated by Catherine Carlisle as she embarks on her first journey as a spy. The twists and turns and elements of mystery will totally immerse readers in this gripping story that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way to the very last page. It definitely deserves a five star rating!
Excellent book – love Cat Carlisle – easy to see why it gained USA Today best seller.
This is the first book that I have read by Author Terry Lynn Thomas and it definitely will not be my last! The first book in the Cat Carlisle Series, The Silent Woman, is an edge of your seat, page turner! Cat is living in a hell of her own due to a husband that treats her cold and as if she doesn’t exist and a vindictive, hateful sister in law who hates Cat for just being alive. Feeling lost and alone, Cat begins a job as a courier for a friend of her late father. Unbeknownst to Cat, she will soon learn the truth behind these deliveries and become acquainted with Thomas Charles who is a historian among other things. When Benton Carlisle is found murdered, all fingers point to Cat until many secrets are revealed. Will Cat find her purpose in life and finally find happiness? This is a magnificently written historical novel with a great deal of mystery mixed in. I am excited about the the second book in this amazing series!
What wonderful characters and a great story. Looking forward to reading book two in the series.
This started a bit slowly but got better as it went along- will definitely read the next one.
When we meet Cat Carlisle in 1937, she’s in her fine Kensington home, wondering when love had snuck out of her marriage to Benton. It may have been after the miscarriages, or after he took a mistress, but either way, it was gone. She had tried to fit into Benton’s high society world, but his sister has always despised her and the rules of their life was stifling. But it was nothing like what was happing in Germany, where Benton’s distant cousin Michael had just escaped from, having to leave his imprisoned wife behind.
As Cat tries to find some light in her loveless, monotonous, life, she has taken a small job with a man named Reginald. She uses her Carlisle connections to deliver letters for him across the city. She doesn’t care what she carries, as she needs to money and something to do. But when someone tries to steal one of her mysterious envelopes, Cat begins to suspect there’s something more to the notes, and soon she’s asked to step deeper into the unknown. Will she weather the storm unscathed or will the far-off whispers of war come closer than she ever dared think?
My summary does not do this book justice, but it’s so hard to create one when every small detail is like a breadcrumb leading to something big. Thomas paints a picture of pre-war life, down to the last vestiges of high society expectations and the dark beer of the Germans. Immersing yourself in a historical is truly part of the charm of reading and Thomas embraces it.
I liked poor Cat, pitying her loveless, childless marriage and her inability to escape from the bonds of the Carlisle household. She’s kind to the servants and long for both her own identity and a bit of human compassion that isn’t just in the form of people feeling sorry for her. As you read, you really want to find a bit of happiness. But it’s hard to want her to completely retire to the quiet life when it becomes very clear that Cat Carlisle is about to step into a world far more exciting and dangerous than anything she has ever known.
I highly recommend this book to both lovers of historical fiction and those that have an interest in pre-war Europe as a whole.
Great mystery. I love this period, WW2 or pre WW2. Suspenseful and moving. After I read the story, bought next book in this series.
I enjoyed this book. Definitely worth reading.
My last read was less than I’d hoped for so I was ready for some real action. Since thriller/espionage is a favorite genre of mine, the plot premise of “The Silent Woman” sounded very appealing. Cat (Catherine) is a society matron in a loveless marriage and she’s enticed at the prospect of helping her country in the run-up to WWII. Her assignment is to switch out some documents in her husband’s office, in effect feeding misinformation to whomever is leaking plans to foreign sources. As the narrative unfolds Cat’s husband is murdered and of course she is a suspect. What ensues is an abundance of quarreling amongst an ungainly number of characters, many of whom are sneaking around, embroiled in their own unrelated subplots. At first glance the intrigue has promise but the characters never come to life and the plot is not really plausible. There’s no excitement or suspense or tension to pull the readers in and hold their attention. Apparently there is a sequel to the story, “The Family Secret” but, I’m not tempted to go for it. I so enjoyed the characters and depth of the novel, thanks for a good read
Set in 1937 when Hitler was busy building his armies, air forces. and camps, the historical portion of this novel focuses on the rush between Germany and Britain to develop technology that would revolutionise the early detection of planes and ships for wartime use. The family dramas are equally as sensitive and immediate.
Thomas is an excellent author and a true wordsmith. By the end of the first chapter, she has introduced the majority of her main characters in the novel, as well as giving the reader a true sense of the personalities of these individuals. Her characters are well developed throughout the book, and conversations are never stilted.
I love historical novels that involve families and was very pleased with the spy ring that Ms. Thomas wrote about in this book, which made the book even better. I look forward to reading more of her novels and recommend this book to anyone!
