I couldn’t stop reading this book! Set against the gripping backdrop of a WWII espionage spy ring, Thomas weaves an intricate tale of both political and personal drama, peopling it with character’s whose actions and motives will keep you constantly guessing. With a well developed cast of characters, and a mood subtly reminiscent of du Maurier’s Manderly, The Silent Woman will keep you turning pages long into the night, and eagerly awaiting the next installment of Catherine Carlisle’s story.
“The Silent Woman” is a gripping spy thriller set in pre-war England (and partially in Germany). I read a lot of WW2 historical fiction and this story pleasantly surprised me by the set of fresh, original characters, a strong female lead, an intriguing plot (till the very end I couldn’t guess who the murderer was), and a meticulously-researched setting.
Cat was a perfect choice for a central heroine, at least in my eyes. Her character development was brilliantly executed and I couldn’t help but applaud when she not only stood up to her sister-in-law Isobel but physically protected Annie not once but twice, which made me respect her even more. Also, her quick mind and decisive nature was a perfect fit for a future agent, just like her desire to stand up for what is right.
Apart from Cat, who obviously steals the show as she gradually grows in front of the reader’s eyes out of a forlorn wife into a savvy and brave spy, other characters brought their own subplots to this already rich story. For instance, (*spoiler alert*) Annie and her running away from the abusive step-father and her mother’s reaction to the accusations made my heart ache for her (*end of a spoiler*). Thomas, Reginald, and Chloe were also wonderfully written in my opinion, just like Blackie – his story and the big reveal deserve a special mention.
Overall, it was a great historical fiction/spy thriller, which I’d highly recommend to everyone and which I’d love to see as a movie one day. A five star read for sure!
An excellent start to a series – I’m already looking forward to reading more about Cat Carlisle and her spying adventures in WW2 London. This story established several characters who I’m sure will appear again but also had a strong plot in itself, including a murder I didn’t see coming at all. The period setting of pre-war London was really well done and although Cat and her aunt are unconventional and interesting, they are still women of their day. I read this book on my beach vacation this year and enjoyed it tremendously!
The Silent Woman” by Terry Lynn Thomas is a very engaging murder mystery that takes place in England a few years before WW2.
Cat Carlisle starts, rather innocently, working for some mysterious man who claims to work for the government.
Soon enough she’s thrust into an espionage affair that finally results in blackmail, murder, suicide and several surprising revelations.
A wonderful read!
My review of The Silent Woman by Terry Lynn Thomas
I’ve read quite a few historical novels set during WWII and I’ve found them to always be gut wrenching, but interesting. Terry was able to bring forward a part of the war history that is rarely discussed and she did it in a way that kept me entertained. My heart raced toward the end causing me to skip nighttime chores and keep reading. Cat, Annie, and Thomas are interesting characters all of whom i look forward to learning more about. Lots of bravery and strength abound! I recommend this book as it was an enjoyable and quick read.
Cat Carlisle is a character you need to meet if you enjoy historical mystery stories! This was set in the late 1930’s! War was in the air! Cat was a strong protagonist, and I knew I needed to read the rest of the novels Terry Lynn Thomas write about her. “The Silent Woman” was just the first of three! Don’t miss these stories!
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book is so well written that I fell right into the story and got lost within the pages. Great historical fiction and I highly recommend.
I was immediately drawn into this story, so because of the intrigue I was on the edge of my seat most of the time I was reading this book. It has many elements in it : love, loss, loss of love, trust, mistrust, secrets, cruelty, abuse, crime, friendship and more. I like the main character of Cat Carlisle. She is perhaps a little naive, but she is loving & kind & is ultimately strong, when tested. There are 2 more books in this series. I now need to read the second. I recommend this book very highly.
The third book in the Cat Carlisle series, I haven’t read the previous two but I was able to keep up with the book. The book is very well written and my first book by this author. I found it to have an intriguing plotline, and kept me turning the pages. I would definitely recommend this book to those that enjoy historical fiction.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher, and this is my fair and honest review
Hello my Fellow Book Dragons and welcome to this week’s Mystery Monday. Our Gem this evening is quite captivating in it’s unassuming beauty, much like English Blue John Fluorite. Many colored, it may seem chaotic with moments of great tension, but hold it for awhile longer and it calms and gives clarity. In this Gem is quiet courage, dignity, selflessness and hope. This is Gem Maker Terry Lynn Thomas’s “The Silent Woman”.
This is the tale of Catherine “Cat” Carlisle. Trapped in a loveless marriage to one of the richest, oldest society families while living in Kensington Cat is contacted by an old friend of her now deceased father. He asks her to help with courier work. She soon finds out this isn’t just passing along innocent bits of paper. It’s the late 1930’s and a nasty little man named Adolf Hitler is starting to cause issues.
Catherine is punched one afternoon in the market and assumes at first it was a mugger, but then realizes it was most likely a spy trying to get the documents in her purse. She goes home with a black eye where her judgemental sister-in-law awaits. Her sister-in-law’s lacky aid is there also, and not much escapes either of their prying eyes. Her husband is rarely home. His cousin is there, drinking away the horror of having escaped Hitler’s new Germany. A new maid has arrived, far underage and hiding a secret of her own.
I cannot tell much more because in doing so I would give everything away..but just know this, I LOVED THIS BOOK. It has everything One could want in a spy novel. Counterspies of the worst type. A Master Spy with a heart of gold and a Watcher who needs revenge but is smart enough to put the job first. There is a secret love affair, a black mailer and more. You will not only want to read this one, you will want to read the other three novels in the series. I know I want too. Terry Lynn Thomas is a Dragon Feeder. She has two series so that she keeps us well fed!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A quick and page turning read for me. This was my first book by this author. It let me interested and guessing. I will definitely read more by her.
I truly enjoyed this book. So much, in fact I have already read the sequel.
Well written, fast paced, interesting subject matter and characters.
Very good! I look forward to reading more in this series.
This was a great mystery taking place just before WWII. The characters were great! I read very quickly because I had to see who did it!
Excellent story telling and while I’m not interested in spy stories or espionage, I was immediately drawn in. The main female character agrees to swap some papers in her husband’s possession to earn money to escape her loveless marriage. A murder takes place and the intrigue intensifies. The atmospheric historical setting in 1937 Britain – just before WWII – the plot, the characters and the writing made this an enjoyable, entertaining and satisfying reading experience.
Story only barely held my interest. I did finish though so it had merit.
A good “what would I do?” book.
I have been reading WWII novels lately & this was a good one from before the war started. It kept my interest and I didn’t know how it was going to turn out until the end.
Very good book, liked it a lot.
Even though you could determine the plot, it’s a reminder of pre world war two
