John Steinbeck is a fantastic writer and story teller. He paints such great pictures in words, and brings the relationships of his characters into high relief.
Steinbeck’s story telling ability and approach grabs the reader immediately. The characters and the relationships feel real. The action moves at a rapid pace and keeps the reader’s interest engaged. There is empathy expressed for even the most unsympathic actors. The author mangages to tell the stories with the perfect balance of sadness and humor.
Very good Steinbeck collection
I don’t know why it took me so long to read this great author.
The stories all had wonderful characters with great description
One of the stories even made me cry

Classic stories
I have read many of these stories many times. One of my favorite authors. I will read them many times again.
some of the greatest short stories ever written. can be read again and again.
Steinbeck is a master and has never written anything not worth reading. He may be my favorite author. I loved teaching GRAPES OF WRATH and OF MICE IN MEN in my high school English classes, and used the former in my high school history classes when we covered the Great Depression. The vignettes were so effective in giving a flavor of what was life was like for REAL people in those days. After (and during) those lessons six of my students built their own Hooverville (their own idea and secret project until it was done).
Steinbeck develops his characters like no one else.
I read all these stories as a kid and decided to revisit Steinbeck again from an adult perspective. I was not disappointed and urge anyone who has not re-read again as an adult to do so. John Steinbeck feels like family in his very down to earth and familiar way of telling a story!!
Always, always read Steinbeck when you get a chance. Fabulous 20th century literature. To be literate, one must know this author and a number of others.
John Steinbeck is my favorite author that ever lived. I have been hooked since I Read Of Mice and Men for the first time over 60 years ago when I was a girl. I have read ost everything he has written (several multiple times). I asm currently rereading East of Eden which I do abut every 5 or10 years.Mr. Steinbecks unique style never grows old.
You can’t really go wrong with John Steinbeck.
