The bestseller with over half a million readers that People magazine called a “live-wire debut.”A decade ago, fourteen-year-old Suzanne Lombard, the daughter of Benjamin Lombard—then a senator, now a powerful vice president running for the presidency—disappeared in the most sensational missing-person case in the nation’s history. Still unsolved, the mystery remains a national obsession. For … national obsession.

Using his military and technical prowess, he soon discovers multiple conspiracies surrounding the Lombard family—and he encounters powerful, ruthless political players who will do anything to silence him and his team. So nice when you find a book you can’t put down! Doesn’t happen very often. This one has a compelling mystery to solve with great storytelling. I am recommending this to all my friends.
Exceptional! Great story that keeps you tethered. Don’t read if you don’t have time to read to end.
Loved this series
The Short Drop is a really good story. Moves along pretty well, keeps you involved.
Gibson’s childhood friend, Suzanne, disappearred while he was in jail. Ten years later, his life is falling apart and an old adversary contacts him wanting his help to find out what happened to her.
Washington politics. Everyone has an agenda. Then people start trying to kill Gibson and his associates. Also, a really creepy freelance killer is lurking around.
Liked this book. Lost sleep finishing it. Well worth the effort. Going to check out the second book in this series.
Riveting…The Short Drop was my pick for my kindle first/prime freebie for this month (Nov, 2015). I am so glad it was! To be true the last few I picked didn’t do it for me. So I waited to see what others had to say about each of the books.
I can definitely say if asked I’d tell people to read it. The characters are believable and (for the most part) likeable. I’ve always been partial to conspiracy mysteries. Then throwing in the dramatic aspects and the few laughs, it’s the perfect storm for success.
This was a very well done story. I have had a copy of this book for years and finally decided to give it a try. I am finding that I have overlooked a lot of great novels over the years and this book is one of them. This book was able to grab me right away and I, along with everyone in the story, wanted to know what really happened to Suzanne. I really enjoyed the time I spent listening to this story.
14-year-old Suzanne Lombard disappeared ten years ago. At the time, her father was a well-known senator but he is now the vice president and is currently running for president. There was one surveillance video of Suzanne that surfaced shortly after she disappeared but nobody has seen her since. Everyone wants to know what happened and where she is now.
Gibson Vaughn knew Suzanne when they were kids. Gibson’s father worked for Lombard and as a result, Gibson and Suzanna spent a lot of time together when they were children. Gibson has his own issues from the past to deal with and is no longer on good terms with Lombard. He decides to sign on with a group trying to finally get to the bottom of Suzanne’s disappearance. I liked Gibson a lot and had a good feeling that he would be able to find out what really happened.
This was a very well thought out mystery. Every piece of information that comes up could become important later in the story. I really enjoyed seeing all of the pieces of the puzzle come together to show the full picture. There is a lot going on in this story but I thought that it worked very well. Everything really made sense and the story felt very possible. I liked that the mystery was able to keep me guessing. There were some pretty big surprises and some excitement that really kept the story moving forward.
I thought that the narrator did a good job with the story. Some of the voices that he used were very similar and I found that I really had to pay attention to determine who was speaking. He had a very soothing voice that I found easy to listen to for hours at a time.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that it was a wonderfully layered and detailed mystery that was able to really make me think. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more from this author in the future.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Thomas & Mercer via NetGalley and I purchased a copy of the audiobook.
A solid, smart thriller. Highly recommended
This book was so much more than I would have ever given it credit for. if it hadn’t been for Amazon Prime I never would have read it and that would have been a damn shame.
Fitzsimmons is a great writer.
Love his books. Can’t wait for his next one to come out in this series
Mystery, suspense, page-turning thriller,
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it hard to put down. The plot and the characters were well developed. I thought that Gibson Vaughn was realistic and a hero. He has had an up and down past that makes him likeable and I found myself rooting for him.
I highly recommend this book and author. I won a copy of Matthew FitzSimmons’ Gibson Vaughn #3 on Goodreads and I wanted to read the beginning of the series and I was not disappointed. I am looking forward to reading #2 and then #3!!!!
I liked this book enough that I looked for other books by the author, will be reading those soon.
rather dull
Well written…..engaging…informing…captivating!
RECOMMENDED IT TO MANY OF MY FRIENDS
It was well written and hard to put down. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
Excellent page turner, couldn’t put it down. Combines action with the look-back story of someone gone missing. Don’t start it in the afternoon or you will stay up too late to finish it.
Intelligent, witty crime series a la Elmore Leonard.
