In Sunnyside, Texas, Jennifer Cloud is an assistant purchasing manager for an upscale shoe store. But after her boss is arrested, she’s forced to find work elsewhere and ends up in her brother’s chiropractic office, where she discovers a hidden passion for helping others. However, when she receives an unexpected birthday gift from her aunt that transports her back in time to 1568 Scotland, she … Scotland, she meets a dashing Scottish outlaw who introduces her to a world of time-traveling keys. But on a return trip to the past, Jennifer’s key is stolen by a villainous band of time travelers who will stop at nothing to collect all of the keys for themselves. When Jennifer attempts to retrieve the key and sees her cousin kidnapped, she enlists a dysfunctional cast of characters—including a few interested suitors—to help her find the key and rescue her cousin.
Inspired by the works of Janet Evanovich and Beth Ciotta and carefully researched, The Shoes Come First is a lighthearted, historical fantasy filled with time travel, suspense, and romance that’s sure to please.

Wow, this is a fantastic story. I loved every minute of it. The characters are great also. Especially Jennifer and her Scottish outlaw. Love Janet Leigh’s books.
I worried about picking this book at first. I told myself that I was crazy for choosing a book about shoes because they are so “Not “ my thing. However after beginning to read I was captured by the entire cast of characters and by such a whimsical tale. I truly loved it and was sorry when it was over. Now have a bigger wish list that includes this whole series. Wonderful read and I recommend it to all.
Pretty good for a quick read
This was a really fun read. Well done.
If you like Janet Evanovich you’ll like this story! Fun, entertaining, enjoyable characters!
The characters in this book are so unique. A nice light read for romantics.
I like sci-fi and fantasy, this had both.
This book was a quick read. It was light-hearted and funny. I needed a break for something different and this fit the bill. It was an enjoyable book for pure pleasure reading
A light summer read.
it was great
Loved it!
This book started a bit slow, but then was a wonderful spin on time travel. Looking for to the second book in the trilogy.
Fun, lighthearted, laugh out loud.. Loved this book, the story was great and the characters were perfect. This was an A+. Can’t wait to start the next.
Quirky characters. Unexpected view into an Indian/Texan family and their family history. Quirky blend of time travel, myth, family Gene’s, modern-day characters, the CIA and MI5.
What I liked about this book was that it was original and very entertaining. I looked several times for a sequel but so far there isn’t one. I hope there will be more coming. Its a quirky journey that is whimsical and at times funny.
I loved this book. Time travel and extremely funny transportation vehicles. When Jennifer inherits an outhouse she has no idea what adventures await her. Great read during the pandemic, it is hare to be depressed when reading this, just let your imagination take you away.
Another author who likes cliff hangers.
I do not.
If I find a new to me author and enjoy their book, I’ll buy more.
I will not buy more from and author who leave me hanging!
Great time-travel with romance, crime, mystery. Thanks Janet!
I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I thought I would. Loose moral content. A little too predictable.
The idea of light hearted time travel and a shoe loving heroine seemed fun but there are huge holes in the story (it starts in Italy and then jumps to Texas with no explanation), the writing is uninspired, the characters insipid, and I never even found the plot. There are also frequent sexual references for no apparent reason. No, just no.
