From the New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You and One Plus One, in an earlier work available in the U.S. for the first time, a post-WWII story of the war brides who crossed the seas by the thousands to face their unknown futures1946. World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime. In Sydney, … they wed in wartime.
In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions. It was an enjoyable read.
JoJo Moyes was true to form in this novel; beautiful writing, well-defined characters and a plot that keeps unfolding, sometimes in surprising ways.
Not typical Jojo Moyes, but enjoyable.
I love this authors!
I thought it was more of a women’s book
Character development was perfect. You could be right there with each of them, and I just knew these women were real!
Love the historical information I learned from this book
Slow to get going, then a great book!
I felt like I was traveling with the brides. Excellent storytelling and wonderful glimpse into history
Very good book. Engaging. Would recommend
It was a good read, and had a historical background
Historical fiction
Good read
I have read several JoJo Moyes books. I particularly enjoy historical novels which this book is. I enjoyed this book the best so far. Lots of research went into this book. Great job JoJo Moyes!!
Believable characters in a good story.
One of the better books I’ve read recently.
Taken from historical events, a part of WWII that is seldom heard about is brought to life in this touching story of war brides being reunited with husbands. If that were only part of the story it would be worth reading, but it is so much more than that. Couldn’t put it down.
Sometimes her books can be difficult to get into, but once I do I do not want
to put them down. What a tremendously vivid storyteller. Three weeks into the
pandemic and I have read two of her books and can’t wait to start another.
Excellent read. My introduction to Moyes, it is smooth blend of romance and history. The facts are accurate and show a depth of research while the plot line is unique and page-turning. The characters are very realistic and draw readers in from the beginning. A totally delightful read.
Interesting cast of characters with only a bit of stereotype. I was unaware of the bride ships and can imagine the expectations of the wives and the demands on the captain and crew. An enjoyable read.
