Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote… and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible … forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five year old.

My favorite Stephen King novel so far!
Extreamly intense.
Hope there will a part II
One of King’s earlier books which are much more enjoyable than the ones he has recently written.
I love Stephen kings books
One of my favorites by Stephen King. Also one of the scariest.
This classic has all the workings of a major mind bender and really keeps the reader on the edge. So many psychological twists and a beautiful delve into the human psyche. When u are isolated both physically, and mentally? Something begins to happen too you. You become something even YOU couldn’t foresee. The monster comes out. Nail biter until …
A good read. Salem’s Lot is the all time best for me…..so the 4 is in comparison.
Head and shoulder above some the drivel that came later.
King is the king of scary!
Stephen King-my fave what can I say!!!!!
I still remember reading this when it first came out. I suggest people read it to see why so many fans dislike Kubrick’s film. The book has more heart, the characters have more dimension, and Jack Nicholson’s character slowly descends into insanity.
I first read The Shining when I was in junior high. I remember being alone in the front of the house reading with adrenaline pumping so hard, I could hear it. I had washed the dishes by hand and stacked them in the kitchen, just outside my room. A glass bowl shifted, making a firm but quiet noise. I screamed out loud. My parents came running …
One of Stephen King’s best works, he takes a ghost story to a whole new twisted level.
I love this book!
When King was at his best
Classic Stephen King. Can’t fail to enjoy if you love King.
I recently read it for the second time. I like everything Stephen King. It was very suspenseful. I recommend it highly.
one of King’s best
I am sooo glad I just went ahead and read this. It was really good. Danny is a great character. Knowing and understanding, but you never forget he’s just a 5 year old and really doesn’t understand. Even Jack. You feel for him. He tries so hard to do the right thing for his family, but seems the universe (Overlook Hotel) is against him.
Intense read. The characters are deep and relatable. That includes Jack, the “villain.” While the film is creepy and entertaining, the character of Wendy is so much stronger and more real in the book. One of my favorites and one I go back and re-read periodically.
