Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote… and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible … forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five year old.

After reading this book for the first time when I was a tween I was terrified of the bathroom! I enjoyed it even more when I reread it as an adult. Was sooo disappointed in the Kubrick film version, except of course for Jack Nicholson’s harrowingly role!!! Heeeeerrrrrre’s Johnny!!
Stephen King’s third novel has established his status as the most excellent horror writer of our time, so I believe. That’s enough reason to run and read the book. But – and here comes the big “but” – it’s hard for me to flatter this book. I began to read it with high expectations; I hoped it would shock me, I wished I could be stretched out, but …
I read this when I was a kid! I had to sleep with the lights on if I read to late! Love being scared!
Loved it. The book was as Scary as when The Shining was made into a Movie!!
Another Stephen King master class. You’ve probably seen the movie now read the book for a more in depth exploration of the characters and a refined horror literary classic, a must read.
A must read whether or not you have seen the movies! Better to see the movies after reading to fill in all the wholes!
My fav horror book. Scares you to death but you can’t stop reading!
Scary
One of King’s best. Not your standard “haunted hotel”. The movie left out a lot.
Its a classic Stephen King really knows how to scar!
Excellent book. Once started it’s very hard to put down. Believable characters. Twisted and entertaining.
When The Shining first hit bookstores, I read the story and later saw the movie adaptation. Both were incredible.
Recently, I picked up the book from my personal library just to understand how King pulled the reader into the story. It took only that first chapter and now I’m drawn back into that story again. I know the story and yet I still …
The Shining is a classic Stephen King. This book is a must read.
The book is amazing. I have to read it again to be honest because I only remember the emotion to be honest. It’s been so long! I started reading Stephen King when I was way to young. Haha.
Wonderful, realistically scary!
This is a good book
One word FANTASTIC
I just watched the film version again (first time since university) because it was on Netflix. It was even better than I remembered. So I went online looking for the TV mini series and watched that too. To keep the binge going, I read the book again for the third time. I rarely read a book twice, so reading this one three times definitely says …
So well written. The suspense was great and a real page turner.
Great read! Only my 2nd Stephen King novel that I’ve read. He’s got one sick mind, but in a good way.
