Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote… and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible … forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five year old.

Worth a re-read every few years … the greatest Haunted House book of all time.
“The Shining” is incredibly haunting, wonderfully paced, and beautifully tragic.
Great book. Very scary
One of my favorite King novels—second only to The Stand!
FAR better than the film! Way scarier!
One of my favorite SK books. Great characters & he Stanley Hotel is made to seem really creepy in this book. Scary but loved it!
This is King’s best work in my opinion.
King’s The Shining is one of those books that make you wish you hadn’t seen the movie first. While Kubrick’s adaptation is brilliant, the novel’s characters are considerably more complex. I found myself rooting for Jack Torrence throughout the entire book because of all those subtle nuances that made his ENTIRE character. And when I thought I was …
Classic story done very effectively.
Excellent book! One of King’s best. Oh, ignore the Kubrick movie version. Not like the book at all. Watch the mini-series instead, that was true to the book.
But first, read the book. Great building up of characters, scary!
Classic of Stephen King universe. Compelling characters and story draws you in. Just read it, already.
IMO this is one of King’s better books. The characters are intriguing and the horror and scares are exquisite!
The ONLY book that ever caused me to keep the lights on and stay awake in the late night when I wanted to sleep. The movie cannot and did not replicate the novel so if you only saw the movie and liked it, read the book.
All I can say is”THIS IS A MUST”!
Me. King always brings it.
This book was a classic Stephan King page turner. I love to read scary books about hauntings and this definitely fits the bill. There is not much I can say that has not already been said. Add this to your reading list if you haven’t read it already.
A really great experience. I say experience because this book feels like a journey and it really hooks you in from the start. One of my favorites.
Stephen King ‘s best for many. For his early works, I agree. Essential for his fans.
This is one of the first Stephen King books I ever read, but I was also much younger than I am at the moment, so I didn’t appreciate it as fully as I do now. I thought a reread was in order, and by God I loved every page of this book.
For those of you who’ve never heard of the book, here’s a small breakdown: Jack Torrance, recovering alcoholic …
This was a book that really surprised me but probably because I read it after seeing the movie for years. And, I actually read it after reading Dr. Sleep, which is the continuation of Danny’s story as an adult, so I attacked this completely backwards. Nonetheless, I was fascinated to learn in the book that a large part of the story is about the …
