Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote… and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible … forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five year old.

I consider this the best King book! Didn’t want to put it down but had to read in daylight; very, very scary.
One of Stephen King’s finest twisted tales.
I have been a fan of Mr. Kings writing since I was in my teens but I had never read this one – one of his very early books. I’ve seen the film and thought “I will have to read this” but never got that far, till now. From the beginning I was hooked even though it seemed to drag slowly through everything in comparison to the film which follows the …
if you like scary stories and movies then you will like this book. I also love the movie.
The Shinning is another one of those classics. I enjoy novels about hauntings and possession of places. Quite different than the movie, I loved every scene and since it’s been a while, I can’t add much without fear of mixing the novel with the movies. I was in high school, so it’s been a few years let’s put it that way. I do remember enjoying it …
It is a great book I have read it twice working on my third time I love how it is scary and makes you want to know what is going to happen next.
One of the best books in the genre written in what I consider to be King’s golden age. Character development is superb, particularly Jack and Danny. King establishes an odd but believable normal as Jack Torrance and family become caretakers at the Overlook Hotel. We get a glimpse of a unsavory past in the hotel and Danny’s ability to ‘shine’. …
I read this when it came out in 1977 and after lots of other Stephen King books, it is the ONLY book I have ever read that got me so scared while reading at night alone in my apartment, I had to put it down. It was those bushes…. Although I love Jack Nicholson’s acting, the film didn’t do it justice. It’s one of King’s best and a real classic …
Another great book by a great story teller
One of the better books that I have EVER read!
The beginning was drawn out and the climax was saved to the last chapters.
Not what I was expecting. I was hoping it would be scarier, or a little more creepy. It was still a decent read. It was really slow to start, and by slow I mean I’ve seen grass grow faster, in a drought. The last 100 pages or so were great though.
I’m reading the follow-up, “Doctor Sleep,” right now. Wish me luck!
Epic. Quintessential Stephen King. Forever relevant and current.
I am an avid reader and this is hands-down the best book I have ever read, I couldn’t count how many times I have re-read it.
I loved this book, much better than the movie!
There are a lot of books that have been made into movies and therefore I never read the book because you can get *most* of the main premise from the movie in half the time. The Shining is *not* one of those movie-book combos. I am so glad I decided to read this because there is so much that was removed from the movie adaptation, and it was all the …
King’s best novel. Well written and full of suspense and chills.
A true Stephan King classic! I read this book when it first came out. Hard to put down, well written.
Mr. King is one of my most favorite authors! I read absolutely everything he publishes .. some I like more than others but he’s aces with me!
