Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote… and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible … forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five year old.

If you have seen the movie the book is a whole different level of weird and down right scary. You need to read the book if you are into horror fiction at all. King is the master of the horror story.
It’s Stephen King. It’s amazing.
2.5️
Second buddy read with my dad
All-around odd and not the kind of book I typically love/enjoy. It wasn’t terrible, just a VERY slow read with a lot of unnecessary fluff – I feel like the book could’ve been reduced by half and been just fine.
I’ll be letting my dad pick our next book #SorryDad
***Would just like to update my review …
The Shining will always be a classic. It should be read and studied by anyone wanting to write. It should be read and enjoyed by anyone who loves a good story. Stephen King remains one of the masters.
Never see the movie. The book is the only story worth it.
The first Stephen King Book I’ve ever read. He has a strong character driven narrative that forces you into the mindset of the characters as they succumb to the madness of the haunted hotel.
Maybe not the best book to read while stuck in isolation. 😛
In my opinion, one of Stephen King’s best books. The story is scary, the ghosts and demons stay with you long after the book has ended, and the characters evoke real emotions. What more could you ask from a horror story?
spooky to watch a character slowly go mad
Couldn’t put it down
I find it interesting when a book is made into a movie and they take liberties to change things that they feel will make the story better. Most times when they do that, it takes away from important aspects of the story. I saw the movie many years before I read the book and put it off thinking I already knew the story so there was no rush to read …
A tier. Solid A. One of the best endings I’ve read. Not as scary as the movie, however the book far exceeded with character development.
A great read, MUCH better than the movie!
This was the first book I ever read that affected me so deeply. As we went through the topiary garden my hackles rose and I could feel the presents of those animals.
Great read.
Well written. I wish I had been able to read it before seeing the movie. Wendy comes off very Different To me but all I can see is Nicholson in the role as Hack.
So scary that we never want to enter the world of shining and yet we enter because of its powerful pull .
I’m finally, finally, finally able to understand why so many people hold the standard of traditional horror in comparison to this novel. The Shining is an impeccable tale of extreme cabin fever with a hefty dose of the destructive nature of alcoholism. When you break it down like that, the supernatural elements actually seem to take a backseat to …
I Love Stephen King’s early work the best. This is one of my favorites.
This book really creeped me out, in a good way. I also noticed that there was a lot more packed into the book than the movie. The movie was very good- I’m not sure why Mister King was so upset by it. The book gives a little bit of redemption to Jack in the end. The curse is explained more thoroughly
Great characters in a powerfully compelling situation.
