The Shining by Stephen King is a perfect example of a proficient …
I’ve been going back to re-read some of my favorite books and gave The Shining a new look. I’d forgotten what a great story it was! If you haven’t read this horror classic, please do yourself a favor and put it on your TBR list!
This was such a good creepy read! I did not mind the slow build at all. I must admit that I am a big fan of the movie but after reading this I just love the book more. I felt for these characters and all they went through. Definitely give this a go if you are on the fence about it.
One of King’s best. Highly recommend.
I am not usually a friend of Stephen King’s books, but this one is very scary.
King can be great and he can awful. This is one of his great ones. I marked “wonderful characters” because it’s all they had about characters. I’d call them more interesting than wonderful. If you’ve somehow gone all this time without having read this book, you need to rectify that omission right away.
Everyone has heard of the multiple movies. Most adults today recognize quotes by Jack Nicholson, and scenes from the Kubrick version of the film have been referenced and spoofed countless times in popular culture, and I’d be willing to bet that most young adults have been exposed to many of the countless references sufficiently that they’d …
Great, scary Stephen King. Loved it.
A scary, tense thriller that only Stephen King can imagine and write.
Kept me up all nite – mostly through fear!
Here’s the Question of the Week on Buzz: What’s a good book to read during a snowstorm?
If you hate “gore” skim the icky parts…its a book…that is what is cool about books instead of movies. For me, books are way scarier because my imagination is much more realistic and connected to me then a visual in a movie.
It has to be the Shining! …
Just the thing at 3 A.M. when the wind is galing and you’re all alone!
When people ask me what is my favorite book, I always say The Shining. I read it right after it came out. I had one of the original books with the silvery covers. When I read the book, I was at the Overlook. This is the only book I’ve ever read that I have actually been in the story. This is also the only horror story that has actually scared …
“Of all the books you read in high school, which was your favorite?”
The Shining came out the year I graduated. So impressionable at the time I just ate this stuff up, like I was living the people in the book. Most know about this book so hardly needs a review but I liked it for how it leads up the thing forgotten.
I was actually scared reading …
I’m always a bit off on my holidays- at Halloween, I’m excited for Christmas, and at Christmas I like to be scared. That’s why around Christmas I like to read The Shining- I like the idea of being trapped in a giant, drafty hotel, snowed in, with ghosts haunting me and my family!
Incredible. I’d always heard the book was entirely different from the movie and, oh my, it was. But it was so much better. I enjoyed the more detailed background from the characters in the beginning, and their growth throughout. Then there were the recurring motifs and that satisfying ending.
This is an awesome book. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. I was surprised that there were a few more characters that were gifted like the boy. I had a small feeling the hotel was possessed. I am looking forward to reading doctor sleep and to see what becomes of Danny.
OMG! I’m lucky I didn’t crap my pants!!
Kings BEST book!!
I was always afraid to read Stephen King’s books. But I had questions about what I saw in the movie years ago. I didn’t find the book horrifying maybe because I had seen the movie. However, the book is definitely better than the movie. It’s a terrific book and well worth the read.
