Gabe Talmadge languished in prison for ten years, convicted of a horrible crime. Now free, he’s unable to find work in the midst of the Great Depression. In desperation, he returns home to Ransom, Idaho, hoping his uncaring father will give him food and shelter, if not love. But the prodigal isn’t welcomed home. Hudson Talmadge, who virtually owns the town, despises his son as much as ever, and … and Gabe is as powerless as an adult as he was as a child to win his father’s approval.
Hungry and hopeless, Gabe is rescued by the owner of a sheep ranch south of Ransom. Incredibly, Akira Macauley gives him a place to live and work to do. More than that, she gives him hope that he can receive forgiveness of his past – and perhaps even love. But when tragedy strikes Ransom once again and Gabe’s life begins to unravel, he must either sink into an abyss of hopelessness or cling to a faith, hope, and love stronger than any he has ever known.

You will wish it didn’t end
never dull,
I think this book is Robin Lee Hatcher’s best yet. Kept me reading, yes there were some predictable moments, but some surprises too. Good job Ms. Hatcher.
Quite predictable!
Enjoyed the book
Loved this book.
I love Robin’s books. This one was filled with God’s grace!
The Shepherd’s Voice is set during the Depression era. Due to time period, there are, of course, sad events in story. Once released from prison Gabe returns home to his father’s mansion; however, the return of the “prodigal son” does not end as it does in the Bible. Rejected and desperate to find a means to survive and support himself, he happens to meet Akira, owner of the sheep farm she inherited from her grandfather. The highlight of the story for me was Akira’s faith. throughout difficulties she encounters. Her comfortable relationship with the Lord and her “praying without ceasing” as recommended in the Bible seem genuine and a possibility for all of us if we developed a deep and abiding relationship with our Maker and truly believed his promises and acted upon them. Gabe’s father provides plenty of difficulties for them as the story unfolds and keeps the story-line moving as the reader thinks, “now what is he going to pull next!”
Characters were well developed. Akira’s faith was also beautifully displayed throughout the book.
Loved this book!
It was light reading but I enjoyed it
This was a surprise and I loved it! The H & h were authentic, real people. There walk with God was inspirational.
This author is so good I had to find another book she wrote. It is awesome too.
This is a beautifully written Christian story of love and acceptance. I would give it 4.6 stars if I could. There are only a very rare few that I would give a 5 star rating to, so I had to settle for a 4
Love Hatcher’s character and plot development. She is a gifted writer.
