Gabe Talmadge languished in prison for ten years, convicted of a horrible crime. Now free, he’s unable to find work in the midst of the Great Depression. In desperation, he returns home to Ransom, Idaho, hoping his uncaring father will give him food and shelter, if not love. But the prodigal isn’t welcomed home. Hudson Talmadge, who virtually owns the town, despises his son as much as ever, and … and Gabe is as powerless as an adult as he was as a child to win his father’s approval.
Hungry and hopeless, Gabe is rescued by the owner of a sheep ranch south of Ransom. Incredibly, Akira Macauley gives him a place to live and work to do. More than that, she gives him hope that he can receive forgiveness of his past – and perhaps even love. But when tragedy strikes Ransom once again and Gabe’s life begins to unravel, he must either sink into an abyss of hopelessness or cling to a faith, hope, and love stronger than any he has ever known.

This story will stay with me a long time. Set in the depression, most of the characters in the book have been able to prosper. One is bitter and greedy with a hard heart. The others are very likable. The book has lots of plot twists and turns. It kept me reading every second I had a little bit of time in this busy season of the year.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK AND WOULD BUY HARD COPIES FOR MY DAUGHTER, AND GRANDDAUGHTERS IF THEY WERE AVAILABLE, BUT UNFORTUNATLEY THEY AREN’T. THE BOOK, AS I UNDERSTAND IT WAS WRITTEN 20 YEARS AGO AND HAS JUST NOW BECOME AVAILABLE IN E-BOOK FORM.. IF YOU CAN GET AN E-BOOK COPY, PLEASE READ IT . THERE ARE SO MANY LIFE LESSONS IN THE STORY AND LOTS OF SCRIPTURE VERSES AS SPOKEN TO THE CHARACTERS IN A PERSONAL WAY BY GOD. I CRIED WHEN THE BOOK WAS OVER. NOT BECAUSE IT WAS SAD, BUT BECAUSE IT SPOKE TO MY HEART AND I WAS SO MOVED.. THANK YOU ROBIN LEE HATCHER FOR THIS BOOK
A sweet Christian historical fiction, as it’s set in Depression Era Idaho, in an area where there were Basque sheepherders. A story of forgiveness and redemption.
Robin Lee Hatcher is one of my go to authors when I need my spirits lifted and she didn’t disappoint with this depression-era novel of love, forgiveness and redemption. Her elegant prose drew me in with the first sentence. An older novel, there was nothing dated about this beautiful story that patiently lays out our need to trust God and walk with Him.
I enjoyed this book because of the beautiful inspirational themes throughout. It was a touching story.
