A member of “The Keepers of Order,” an armed militia determined to hunt down the culprits who have been poaching bighorn sheep, is shot while patrolling one of the remotest parts of Utah’s rugged backcountry. In pursuit of the shooter, Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera stumbles upon another crime linked to the activities of a Ute medicine man who roamed those same lands in the early 1700s. With the … the help of a smart, young anthropologist, Rivera plunges into the past to unravel a sequence of bizarre events underlying a shocking murder. In the end, he’s once again forced to choose between enforcing the letter of the law and serving the cause of justice.

This book takes place is the desert of the southwest, in Utah. The description of the area was very good in that you felt you were right there. The mystery of who was responsible for the first shooting and later the murders was well done. I will read this author again.
EXCELENT BOOK. INTERESTING.
Manny and the Southwest landscape–what better ingredients for a great story?
This was a good mystery and kept me reading to find out who the bad people were.
I really like the setting, and descriptions of the landscape. Manny is a likable character. Plot and characters are believable as citizens of the Southwest.

Great story
Loved this historical fiction. The information about the different Indians and the pictures they engraved in the rocks made me wish I could see them. Great story line.the adventure and drama leading up to finding the murderer and poachers kept me turning the pages. The romance gave a much needed rest between the male characters.
great characters navigate beautiful southwest landscape.
Paints beautiful word pictures of the scenic southwest while it leads us through the world of poachers and early explorers.
When I got this book to read I expected it to be ok, but was completely unprepared for how good it really is. From beginning to end it is a terrific book. I would try to explain but writing is not my strength. If the title appeals to you then I think you would enjoy it as much as I did.
reminded me of Tony Hillerman’s series
