A member of “The Keepers of Order,” an armed militia determined to hunt down the culprits who have been poaching bighorn sheep, is shot while patrolling one of the remotest parts of Utah’s rugged backcountry. In pursuit of the shooter, Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera stumbles upon another crime linked to the activities of a Ute medicine man who roamed those same lands in the early 1700s. With the … the help of a smart, young anthropologist, Rivera plunges into the past to unravel a sequence of bizarre events underlying a shocking murder. In the end, he’s once again forced to choose between enforcing the letter of the law and serving the cause of justice.

The had an interesting story to tell but sometimes it seemed a bit less than professional. It wasn’t something I was anxious to get back to
Okay but not special.
I did find this book interesting but not worth 5 stars as it was a little to predictable.
I love the Moab area, so the biggest appeal is the local color. The characters are interesting and the plot is not completely predictable.
The story was ok, but there was too much description of scenery. Ultimately, I thought it wasn’t worth the time it took to read.
Historical setting and story. A variety of characters are meshed together to solve an ancient mystery. What will a person do to gain a fortune?
Love the Manny Rivera series. Great plots, enjoy realistic portrayal of the Moab UT and Four Corners areas, almost like being there. Manny as a deputy sheriff in Moab is likeable and believable. Rich Curtin writes a great story without resorting to foul language or gratuitous sex. The evolving story carries the narrative without resorting to such. A great read, as is the entire series.
This is another great book in the series. Easy reading with good character development although the plot is a bit simple and predictable.
