“I’ve loved every one of Susanna’s books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly’s delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won’t let go!”— DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of OutlanderThe invincible ninth Roman Legion marches from York to fight the Northern tribes, and then vanishes from the pages of history. When Verity Grey … from the pages of history. When Verity Grey goes looking for them, she may find more than she bargained for.
Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea.
Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he’s finally found it—not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has “seen” a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long—dead comrades.
Here on the windswept shores, Verity may find the answer to one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time. Or she may uncover secrets someone buried for a reason.

I LOVE Susanna Kearsley. This book made me look for Roman Ruins on my trip to Wales in May 2018 & gave them so much more meaning. Fabulous book/story/characters.
Great characters, just enough “supernatural” elements to make it fun to read. Loved the setting and the explanations given about the cultural and historical references that helped the plot without bogging the story down.
Okay. Not a fan of ancient ghosts.
I love this author. Never disappoints!
I was not expecting to learn as much as I did when I read this. There was a great deal of history but the archaeological detail was fascinating. The story moved along, the characters were original and the premise was unique. Very enjoyable!
I love all of her books but this was unexpected and the followup in another book was also cool.
I’ve loved all of the Suzanna Kearsley books I’ve read. I really have enjoyed the way she weaves the time travel events into her stories, she uses very different angles in each one. Great characters and great historical elements as well. I’ve walked away with a greater knowledge of UK history and culture! I would definitely consider myself a fan …
The author is very good at drawing you into a story . This the third novel of hers that I have read and enjoyed. It is a prequel to a later book , “Firebird”that shares some of the same characters in the story. Well worth reading .
Better than the first, but still not as good as I expected. Predictable
Enjoy all of Susanna Kearsley’s books!
Predictable. Average writing. Contrived.
Love Sussanas books!
Always a wonderful experience of a different world with characters you care about.
I was very disappointed with the ending, but up until that point I thought the characters were fun, strong-willed, and independent.
Not very good. A shaky premise to start, wooden characters, plot holes, characters who add nothing to the story…I didn’t care for it. Not enough romance ( enough for me) to be a romance, not much of a ghost story, not much of a mystery. Not worth your time.
If you like historical fiction, this is the book for you. Susanna again delivers a wonderful read that draws you in. I have enjoyed all of her books thus far. There is nothing over heavy about this book. Just a good old fashioned summer read. Enjoy!
Wish there was more detailed information about the actual “dig” and what they found. It turned into a romance novel
Very good book! I so enjoyed the characters, including ‘the ‘centurian’. I enjoyed the possible paranormal aspect of this story and was sorry when it end. Love this author.
The romance part was secondary to the historical adventure. I also particularly liked the boy with second sight. It wasn’t done dramatically but subtlety. The second sight also appears to be hereditary. The people seem genuine and unique.
I enjoyed this book. Easy to read and original in approach. I love her settings and characters and the blended plots. Highly recommended
