“I’ve loved every one of Susanna’s books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly’s delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won’t let go!”— DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of OutlanderThe invincible ninth Roman Legion marches from York to fight the Northern tribes, and then vanishes from the pages of history. When Verity Grey … from the pages of history. When Verity Grey goes looking for them, she may find more than she bargained for.
Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea.
Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he’s finally found it—not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has “seen” a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long—dead comrades.
Here on the windswept shores, Verity may find the answer to one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time. Or she may uncover secrets someone buried for a reason.

It’s fall and with Halloween upon us, I love nothing more than a cup of tea/coffee/hot cocoa (I don’t discriminate!) and a Gothic romance/mystery by Susanna Kearsley. The Shadowy Horses is set at an archeological dig in a quaint town where the heroine encounters the spirit of a long-dead Roman soldier. There are creepy moments but nothing too …
For some reason this book is not advertised as being part of Kearsley’s Slains series. I would put it as book 1.5- coming after The Winter Sea and before The Firebird.
The Shadowy Horses is hands down my favorite of Kearsley’s books (and they are all fantastic).
This book takes place in Scotland as Verity, an archeologist, is looking for …
3.5 stars. I wanted to like this more than I did. The ending was too easy what with the magic that started out as occasional and believable and turned into “anytime we need an answer.” The romance was probably the best part–slow and realistic in both cases. It’s a good book with a great setting.
Such a great story. It will suck you in and not let you go tell the last page. I couldn’t put this book down. I stayed up way too late just to finish it.
Susanna Kearsley writes beautifully. Her descriptions, turns of phrase, every word combines to paint a wonderfully vivid picture.
One of my favorite books! The writing is wonderful and the story is haunting!
4.5/5️
So happy I discovered Kearsley. ️
This one centers around an archaeological dig in a small Scottish town. The assembled dig team is searching for the Ninth Roman Legion’s marching camp and/or resting place to explain their mysterious disappearance in history. Their only guidance is from an 8-year-old boy with “the gift” who sees the …
Brilliant, brooding, and beautiful! THE SHADOWY HORSES by Susanna Kearsley is a well-written journey with a fascinating and endearing cast of characters. This atmospheric book had me back in Scotland, walking the hills and interacting with villagers. Perhaps it’s the Scottish in me, or my former desire to become an anthropologist, but I easily …
4 Stars
I just enjoy her stories! Love the characters and the surrounding environments!
I enjoyed “The Shadowy Horses,” the first Susanna Kearsley novel I’ve read. I’m a bit of a sucker for stories set in Scotland, perhaps because my distant ancestors hail from there and I feel a certain pull to it. I’m also partial to tales that involve the second sight and the archeology theme was interesting. Kearsley’s description in some places …
I loved this book. My first by this author. It left a lasting impression and a desire to read her other works. All are excellent!
Great read. Love this author.
Great story, but the romantic in me wanted a bit more of the love story. What was there was excellent, though. Lovely descriptions.
I didn’t want this to end! I was so fully immersed in the story, dying to know what the archeology team might unearth, whether the Roman army had ever come through there, and just what might set the Sentinel’s soul at ease. Not to mention how fun it was to see a young wee Robbie whom I met as an adult in The Firebird. Plus, the lovely development …
Not up to previous books.
This is my favorite book by Susanna Kearsley. Loved the characters
This story will have you reaching for the history books. I want to know all I can find about the Ninth Legion and what happened to them. A real mystery, never solved.
I love books that pique my interest in learning more about something they mention! Reading about the IX Legion has given me more appreciation for how this story is told every time I read it. I highly recommend her books!
Took a day and just keep reading. This was a page-turner for me.
