The second part of the Witch-Hunter series.
The world has been thrown into darkness by the Shadow Witch’s revolution. The witch-hunters are scattered, but still strong. The race is now on to gather allies and win the war.
New enemies will arise; loyalties will be pushed to the limit. And an important question will be answered: can a witch-hunter that practices magic ever be trusted, or will he … trusted, or will he be persecuted?
It is said that ‘love conquers all’, but this twisted love must stay secret, locked away with the past.

The Shadow Reigns picks up right where book one left off in K.S. Marsden’s Witch-Hunter series, with Hunter recovering after the latest battle with the Shadow Witch and her followers. And while this book moves a little slower, it’s certainly not lacking in character development. In this book we get to know Hunter and his team more as they develop a stronger friendship and trust in one another. Sophie isn’t as prominent in this book, but when she does appear, what happens is nothing short of jaw-dropping and had me reaching immediately for book three. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Sophie fell in love with Hunter and vice versa. But they couldn’t be together and Sophie was determined to kill him. Until she stabbed him and felt the same pain he did.
Apparently the baby creates a strange connection between them, so Sophie is forced to withdraw during her pregnancy, creating a moment of peace before the storm.
Hunter discovers that he has interesting abilities that allow him to travel from one place to another in a “blink” even taking others with him. He also has the ability to form an anti-magic shield, which proves to be a great advantage in a war against witches.
Thanks to Sophie (who accuses him of being a witch), he learns that these “powers” are similar to those of the Benandanti, an ancient anti-witch people who developed skills in their years of fighting witches and ended up being annihilated by the witch hunters themselves for their powers.
From this point, Hunter and James desperately searched for information about them, but there were no major results. It would be necessary to search their place of origin in Italy, but with the war that was being prepared Hunter could not abandon the MMC.
There had been a few hints from his research, but nothing solid. That the Benandanti could walk through dreams, that they could control the elements and manipulate the world around them. But no one mentioned how.
The truth is there is not much more to tell about this book. Yes, some interesting things happened and there is an advance in the story. However, I do not stop feeling that the real progress of the plot could have been made in just a couple of chapters.
I feel like Hunter’s reactions to having a child are too vague. An overreaction such as crying every time he remembers it would not be logical either, however, it is like he forgets his existence most of the time.
Hunter stilled at the mention of his son. Where was he now? At home with his grandmother, while his mother went on her killing spree?
Here the relationship between Sophie and Hunter is destroyed. It is clear that Sophie loves him, but is obsessed with doing her duty. But Hunter doesn’t seem to really love Sophie, at least his behavior doesn’t show it. And honestly it does not show either the desire for revenge that he should feel against her with everything she has done. There are very few moments of weakness when he shows any emotion towards Sophie.
When did this happen? A few years ago, he would hace enjoyed the attention. She was a pretty girl – they could have flirted, possibly slept together, and entertained some short-lived relationship. Hunter blamed Sophie, it had to be her fault. Or was it because he was a father – did that automatically make you mature and responsible?
It’s not a bad book nor did it bore me at any point, but it really disappointed me in terms of the development of the story. I still recommend it, as the entire saga is quite entertaining to read. K.S. Marsden is hilarious.
PS: In this book there is a conversation between Hunter and his team in which they tell him that he was Voldemort and Sophie Dumbledore. Pure gold.

Oh Hunter…I love that man. I listened to this series and man it was so good!! It ended too soon!! The battle continues on this book and man you are in for a surprise I think. Ha!
I’m very excited and eager for the third book! I hope it comes to audio! Great series!!
I recommend listening to the audio. It’s quite fascinating with the accent. #Swoon. I love it.

This is the second book in the series Witch Hunter. It is not a standalone book and has a cliffhanger ending. The author does provide a summary of the events in book 1 at beginning of this book.
Here, Hunter and his crew are recovering from their last battle with the Shadow Witch. Things did not go well for them so they must formulate a plan where they might have the upperhand in their next meeting. In the meantime, Hunter is exploring his new found powers.
This is a great follow-up to the first book. It is much darker and a bit slower paced than the first book. But, that does not mean that there aren’t heart wrentching moments which steal your breath away. Most of this book focuses on the witch hunters with the addition of some new characters – the Shadow Witch [Sophie] is not at the forefront here. I absolutely adore Hunter’s mother and her droll sarcastic comments and she does not disappoint.
I listened to this book – the narrator is perfect. I absolutely love his speaking voice, which is very easy on the ears.
The Shadow Reigns (Witch-Hunter #2) by K.S. Marsden is an awesome story that I have read. This is book number two in this awesome series that I have fallen in love with. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fantasy in their stories.

It was great to go back to the world again. This book sounded a bit darker in feeling and desperation, though.
I liked that there was some further development of the conflicts and the characters.

This is the second book of three in a series, and you would really need to read the first before this one to get a good feel of what is going on. This one is a little slower than the first, and there is quite a bit of sitting around waiting for things to happen/Astley to recover. It might have dragged a little at times because of that, but things pick up later, where there is a bit of a shocker that occurs. The story is still intriguing though, and you can tell things are intensifying leading up to the last book.
I absolutely love this series, but I wish there wasn’t such a long wait between books. This book is so good, but heart-breaking. too. A slower pace gave me the chance to feel like I really knew everyone. I was a bit surprised at the end. I don’t want to give anything away, but not everyone I had really come to love survives.
After the rise of the shadow witch Sophie, the world is plunged into darkness, technology destroyed, and the witch hunters scattered. Hunter and his remaining allies struggle to gather the survivors to mount a defence and prepare for a counterstrike. The witches have gone silent, but there is no truce. Merely the calm before the next storm.
This book is a little darker than the first one, and the feeling of desperation is palpable as it seems the witch hunters have no chance of winning, or perhaps even surviving. But, they have Hunter, and he has powers he is just coming into and still has much to learn. Can there be any hope for peace between witches and hunters? The line blurs between oppressed and oppressors, heroes and villains. It is easy to see why the witches feel justified in their attacks, but equally hard to fault the hunters who strive to protect common people and their homes. I eagerly await more of the story!

This was a great follow up to book one, the Shadow Rises. I really enjoyed the continuing story of Hunter, a bit slower paced than book one but still enjoyable. The characters were very engaging and the storyline kept me interested until the very end and left me in a hurry to read book three.
