“The Self Defense Handbook” is easy to understand with clear instructions and illustrations. There are different martial art forms used to showcase street fighting and self-defense strategies. The book starts with ways to avoid confrontation and progresses with moves to practice. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to increase their level of confidence in dangerous situations.

First of all, I would like to comment that the author has trained in some my favourite martial arts including JKD, Filipino Kali/ Escrima and Krav Maga. Although I must say I am not a fan of martial arts like systema.
The book is arranged well, outlying basic principles of self-defense — including situational awareness, avoidance etc. Then he has broken down the book into Basic self-defense techniques, advanced strikes and strategies and weapon disarms.
The material in each section is explained well but at the same time concise with very good illustrations. The range of topics seems comprehensive. There are plenty of valuable tips and practical ideas like using make shift weapons for self defense *spoilers*
I guess that the martial arts training and level of the reader may have an impact on the level of understanding of the techniques. Where this book transcends is in putting all the concepts and ideas of self defense in one place. The information in the book can be used to make a framework for planning practice sessions with the help of an instructor. I say this because, knowing the concepts does not mean that you may be able to use the tactics in a real life or death situation.

Very good theoretical book. I enjoyed this book very much as I was trying to find a self-defense course in my area, which unfortunately is unavailable. Therefore I grabbed the opportunity to at least read about it. The descriptions are clear, well explained and the diagrams were quite good illustrations of the actual movements.
Of course, avoiding conflict is definitely preferable in most situations but although I am not claiming that the book empowered me but it definitely had given me an idea as to what I could perhaps attempt if I absolutely had to do something. It would be great if an instructional video accompanied this book but even as it is I would gladly recommend this book.

This is a great book for how to defend yourself in multiple scenarios and I was impressed. The wording and pictures are relatively easy to understand but many of these moves (as to be expected) would require practice for proficiency and self confidence.The book covers all the basics and some sneaky tricks that are sure to be unexpected by an attacker. This book would be very good for beginners and even a few seasoned martial artists might enjoy this book.

This book is great for how to defend yourself in multiple scenarios. Though it doesn’t offer much in the way of recognizing when it’s appropriate. The wording and pictures are relatively easy to understand. Of course, I will still need to spend a lot of time practicing before I am confident that I can execute any of this when in danger. There were a couple moves that I intend to look up on YouTube. Not because I think this book is deficient, but because it was a bit on the complicated side and I don’t think any description or picture combination would be enough for me to know I’m doing it right.
