HER HIGHLAND DEVIL:
Kidnapping and plunder? Envy, rivalry and jealousy? Shock and anger? Subterfuge and betrayal? War and raids? Action and Adventure? Enemies to Lovers? . An exciting story of the enmity between the English and the Scottish people. A forced marriage between a young English lady and a Laird’s son was meant to help tone down the blood curdling roar for war from both sides. Lady Gabriella is the daughter of the Earl of Hawkshire. Castle Mackenzie lay on or near the border of Scotland and was always susceptible to being attacked. In order to protect his eldest daughter Gabriella, the Earl arranged for her to marry her childhood friend Ronnie. Ronnie was a neighbor and would not hesitate to assist the Earl to defend his home. Gabriella had always read romances and had fantasized that one day she would meet her true love and marry. Ronnie was not her true love. As a dutiful daughter she agreed to marry him. In Scotland, Laird Lachlan Ridell was dying. He had to move quickly to set things in motion to avoid a battle between his nephew Malcolm and his son Callum for the Lairdship. Lachlan kidnapped Gabriella and forced his son Callum to marry her. He then resigned his Lairdship and turned the reins over to Callum. Malcolm was not only disappointed but infuriated and put his plan into action to usurp the Lairdship from Callum and steal his wife. That means Callum must die in order for him to become Laird. He gained the help of Callum’s former mistress Lady Erlyn Banalt. The plan was for Malcolm to become Laird and for Erlyn to resume her relationship with Callum. This is an exhilarating, heart-stopping, mind boggling, thrilling book. You will not be bored and I do recommend it.
HER HIGHLAND PROTECTOR: (SPOILER ALERT)
It begins with a heinous serial killer. Add a survivor of the killer to the mix and the hatred between the English and the Scots with a budding romance and you have “The Highland Protector”. A survivor of the serial killer, Myra Travers, is English and was saved by scouting Scottish warriors, in particular, the Laird’s son, Greer MacEilish. Despite the blood and dirt all over Myra, Greer saw her beauty and automatically became protective of her. I liked Myra’s character. She went from lowly, unworthy cleaning maid in the Earl of Primshire’s household to an independent, active, confident young woman who blossomed while in the care of the MacEilish Clan. She proved she had leadership qualities and was protective of her new family. She learned to ride a horse and trained in using a knife in a fighting capacity to defend herself. She is a strong, rational woman with the type of personality that endears all to her. Greer being the Laird’s son, was raised to be a warrior and protector of his clan. He can be thoughtful and gentle and yet when he feels strongly about something he cannot be reasoned with. At least until he cools down and his companions talk to him. He is a great leader and comes up with excellent solutions to difficult problems facing their women with the serial killer on the loose. I like Greer’s character. He is strong physically, mentally and has an iron clad determination to do what is right. He is one of the best warriors in his clan. But his leadership qualities shines above all. While Myra convalesced from her near-death experience, she got to know the MacEilish clan and became close to Greer, his mother Fiona and Greer’s father Kerr. Myra and Greer’s fondness of each other did not come without its ups and downs. Myra could be stubborn and angry while Greer could be unbendable and overprotective not allowing Myra to blossom into her new independence. A real problem for them. Yet they fell in love. The serial killer continued killing until the clan’s measures to protect the women thwarted him. Desperate for release since the killer could not kill Scottish women, he went on and killed English peasants, even a young shepard boy. When the Scottish King found out about the killings, he demanded the English King take action to find the killer and hang him. In turn the English King demanded the Earl of Primshire, Marsden Platt find the killer and he had two weeks to bring the killer’s head before the King. This was a problem for Primshire. He found that he could not fulfill the King’s edict without exposing the real killer. Primshire is a cold, evil, vindictive man who relished in the fear his people had for him. He led with an iron fist and killed anyone who defied him. This story has many unpredictable twists and turns. There were some surprising events that shocked me. This is such an exciting and adventurous man hunt with a slow burning romance. You find that Primshire will go to any length to protect the killer while Greer and Myra are willing to sacrifice it all to bring the killer to justice. An excellent read and I highly recommend it.
1. HIGHLANDER’S HONOR – 4 STARS
You will certainly get your monies worth in this tale. As the story progressed, I regretted not keeping track how many times she was kidnapped – I’d say 5 and I am sure that is underestimated- lol. It got to be overkill for me. Granted made for a very suspenseful story.
You have so many villains that it is a wonder our H/h could get time for romance. As the story unfolds you have many to choose who killed the h’s brother. You will use many emotions because people you start to care for are killed.
There is a lot of violence, betrayal, many exciting fight scenes and strong main and secondary character’s. You will be certainly entertained!
We have lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 if that and described only a few times and not long in description. I didn’t find it erotic.
We have no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and a tad of spice. We do get a short epilogue. But, if you want the EXTENDED EPILOGUE, you have to download it – WHICH I DISLIKE!!
2. HER HIGHLAND DEVIL – 2.5 STARS – ROUNDED UP TO 3 STARS
I was like the author decided to ruin her ending after setting up a terrific story. I am still dumbfounded over the turn of events which I will explain later.
There are editing problems – but not enough to make me scratch my head.
I didn’t care for the h in the beginning. She was selfish and didn’t even want to know the people in her village or where she lived.
It was confusing how they kept switching from calling his cousin to brother and vice versa. Then the H’s father he was called by the cousin – father or uncle at times. This was very confusing. They were not brothers in the blood sense. I’ve read many Highland stories and this has never been done before.
The term okay was used and it wasn’t a phrase until mid 1810, the series is set in 1718. WOW was used and I was surprised the term was somewhat used in the 1500’s.
The H has a mistress who use to be best friends with his almost wife (deceased betroth). . Now he has no trouble bedding the mistress but he does his wife – he feels guilty. HELLO – you should feel more guilty taking her ex-betroths best friend to bed, not
your wife.
Now to the part that really ruined the story for me. SPOILER – SPOILER – After our H/h have fallen in love, there is betrayal and the H believes the h is guilty. The H is severely injured as she is taken back to England. She goes back home, not worrying if her husband is alive. She makes plans to marry a man she was to marry before the H takes her. HELLO – you are already married. Nothing was mentioned if the marriage in Scotland wasn’t considered valid – maybe it wasn’t but this was never discussed or explained to the reader. Totally ruined how easily they both forgot their feelings, especially the h.
END OF SPOILER
There is suspense, a couple fight scenes, romance builds slowly, tad of spice – heat level 3 out of 5, HEA, no cliffhanger and somewhat of adultery. After the H is married, he goes back to his mistress. Now they are in bed and his chest is bare so I am assuming they did the act – it is unclear. AGAIN HAVE TO DOWNLOAD EXTENDED EPILOGUE – YEK (ljb)
3. HER HIGHLAND PROTECTOR -2 STARS
I didn’t feel a connection/chemistry with the H/h. She is a maid, a commoner and within a short period of time, is bossing people around. Plus add that she was arrogant so many times that I could not figure out why the H liked her.
The is a sick villain who has murder just under 20 people. Some of it described some not. So be warned this story is violent.
Another ridiculous part is a villain is trying to kill the h and has tried at least two times. What does this little maid do, she rides 20 leagues = 69 miles to a keep she’s never been too, ALONE! Let alone just learned how to ride a horse.
The ending was ridiculous and we get an epilogue that was ok. You have to download the extended epilogue, which I’ve said many times, I dislike immensely. The extended epilogue takes place 6 months in the future. SPOILER – SPOILER SPOILER –
The h and her best friend are both pregnant and well with rounded bellies. The don’t get married for 6 months – OMG – WHY? END OF SPOILER — END OF SPOILER
There is a lot of lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4.5 out of 5. Since I didn’t care for them, it wasn’t filled with passion, but lust.
No cheating for our H/h but is with a two side character’s, no cliffhanger, HEA, I didn’t feel there was romance, and steam and editing issues. (ljb)
Really great set of reads. All exciting, emotional, surprising, danger, suspense and much more. All attention getting and so enjoyable. I love this author and everything she writes. I highly recommend this set. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
