This book has everything! Everything! I wasn’t expecting the beautiful love story that swept across almost a full century, but I loved every moment of it. If you like historical romances with a hint of mystery, this is an absolute must read.
A good page-turner as a possible alternative history.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book when I began reading it. I actually thought it was going to be another book about Anastasia survival book, but it turned out to be so much more than that.
The premise is a dual story line with the first taking place from 1916 – 1986 in Russia, Germany and America. It introduces us to Dimitri Malama, A Russian calvary soldier and the Grand Duchess, Tatiana, daughter of Tsar Nicolas. They fall in love but are soon separated by the war and the inevitable destruction of the Romanov family.
The present-day story line centers around Kitty Fischer, Dimitri’s great granddaughter. Kitty has made a sudden departure from England to America due to her husband’s infidelity. She flees to Dimitri’s cabin in America where she discovers a long buried family secret.
The Secret Wife is an emotional and fascinating story of a gripping and often brutal period of history. The author has woven together a beautiful and captivating story based on historical events with a dash of her own invention. A fascinating read.
Gill Paul is a supremely talented writer. This book, for me, is her best to date. Set amidst real history, the intrigue is brilliantly woven and the characterisations are superb. I loved this book.
This is the first book by Gill Paul that I’ve read and it definitely has made me put her others on my TBR pile. The Secret Wife had two timelines/plot-lines which I love in a book. Set mostly in America in the modern timeline and mostly in Russia in the older timeline, both gave a full picture of life in two specific places, for two specific characters. I normally love the “older” timeline in a book more than the modern one, but in this case I felt more of the mystery of what happened was unfolding in the modern plot than in the “past.” I really loved what was revealed and found myself wanting to go back to the book every chance I had.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Enjoyed the historical info and the clever way in which the author played with possibilities!
I loved this book. Captivating and exciting, beautifully written. You won’t be able to put it down.
I found the author’s creativity to be fascinating and interesting in the way that she took historical facts and turned them into this work of fiction that was so believable. The author wove in and out of this story, bringing different generations together so flawlessly. I read this book as part of our book club and we all enjoyed the story very much. Good job, Gill Paul, and thank you for sharing your vivid, wonderful imagination with us all.
Thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction about the Romanov Family. Enjoyed the way the story unfolded told from the different eras. Loved and cared about the family and hated the regime.
i found this book haunting, sad and I always like a happy ending. I did not get one.
The Romanov tragedy has always fascinated me and the hint that one of the Grand Duchess’s had survived and married was an entertaining storyline. What I did not know and found fascinating, was that Malama was a real person.
Great book. If you enjoy historical fiction from Russian era coupled with a love story that stretches the imagination you’ve found your next read.
This novel based on the Romanov’s will leave you breathless. It goes seamlessly from the past to the future as Kitty Fisher attempts to piece together her great grandfather’s life. A great grand father she never knew she had until she was left a cabin on Lake Akanabee in upstate NY.
She finds a piece of jewelry which leads her to want to know more as she is renovating the cabin.
Be sure to have tissues on hand as this is a story of soulmates who kept losing each other amidst the Russian Revolution–only to find each other years later both married to or living with other people.
An exceptional book with a topic that I thought I had no interest in. It turned out to be unbelievably informative inspiring and memorable.
This story pulled me in from the first.
I thought I was just reading fiction and then read the author’s notes. Yes it is obviously fiction, but there is a lot of historical research that went into this story. I was actually surprised at how much I was fascinated with this story.
A unique take on history, this book was fascinating.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story as it’s not the type of thing i typically read. Very well written with believable characters and story line. I felt for these people and like the good and bad traits that made them very human.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were believable and I wanted to know what happened to them! I liked the way she wove a believable tale around the political upheaval in Russia at the time while incorporating a current timeline with modern characters. All in all a good read!
