Did she once have a sister? Has her mother lied all these years? After a painful divorce, Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham, the small island off the South Carolina coast where she grew up. She goes there to heal–and to help her brother, Keith, a deeply troubled man who’s asked her to come home. But she refuses to stay in the family house. The last person she wants to see is the wealthy, … the wealthy, controlling mother she escaped years ago.
Instead, she finds herself living next door to someone else she’d prefer to avoid–Rafe Romero, the wild, reckless boy to whom she lost her virginity at sixteen. He’s back on the island, and to her surprise, he’s raising a young daughter alone. Maisey’s still attracted to him, but her heart’s too broken to risk…
Then something even more disturbing happens. She discovers a box of photographs that evoke distant memories of a little girl, a child Keith remembers, too. Maisey believes the girl must’ve been their sister, but their mother claims there was no sister.
Maisey is convinced that child existed. So where is she now?

This book present a winning combination of strong characters, action backed storyline with twist and turns, and an ending you don’t see coming.
Original plot, great chemistry between h and H, enjoyable and believable dialogue, and lots of supporting characters to add suspense, humor, and terror.
Great twist…
Light mystery/romance. Surprise ending; interesting characters.
This was a great book. Maisey Lazarow comes back to the small island where she grew up in South Carolina with her older brother Keith. After her husband divorce her, she came home to help her brother who has emotional problems because of their beautiful sometimes cruel Mother’s abuse to her son. Maisey does not want to stay in the family mansion, so she goes to the family cottages on the other side of the island that belonged to her dead father. This was once her favorite place to be, on this beach. Maisey is told there is a person who is fixing up the cottages due to hurricane damage who happens to be the boy she lost her virginity to Rafe Romero. Rafe has a precious little girl with a disability that Maise falls in love with. She decides to stay there to get her life back together. Maisey still has feelings for Rafe, but she finds pictures of another little girl with her brother and is determined to find out if this little girl is their secret sister. It was such a page turner and I could not put it down. I love these suspenseful romance books. I’m on to the next book in the series by Brenda Novak called The Secrets She Kept.
Everyone thought the richest family in town had everything. But all they had were secrets. A sister found, abuse, drugs to cope, murder, family, low self worth, finally love and resolve. Brenda’s writing will keep your interest and have you wanting more.
Maisey Lazarow returns to Fairham Island after a bitter divorce and a tragedy. She returns to help her brother, Keith. She does not want to see her wealthy, controlling mother – who is the reason she left the island.
She ends up living in a bungalow at the other side of the island but she’s next to Raphael who she went to high school with and whom she’s also looking to avoid. While working on renovating one of the bungalows, Raphael finds a box of photos and gives them to Maisey. They are photos of her and Keith but also another child who looks a lot like them. Maisey thinks this child is their sister but they don’t know what happened to her….so Maisey decides to find her despite her mother warning her not to look into this matter.
Awesome book
The Secret Sister (Fairham Island, #1) was another great read by Brenda Novak. Maisey suffered a painful divorce and decided to return to her small island hometown. She returns to help her brother, who asked her to come help. She won’t stay in the family home due to her controlling mom. She finds yourself living next to Rafe, the man who she lost her virginity to. She finds out that he is raising a young daughter alone. Rafe discovers a box of pictures with another little girl in them. Maisey and her brother remember a little girl but didn’t know she may be there sister. I loved reading Maisey and Rafe’s chemistry as well as Maisey and Keith’s search for their sister. I can’t wait to read more by Brenda Novak.
This is a fantastic story! I was so engrossed in the plot and really never knew where it was going to lead me until the end! I think the author did an amazing job of the character development and settings of the island that the story takes place on. My heart went out to some characters and others I did not like at all. The emotions that an author pulls from a reader when they are reading shows their skills.
I am in the process of reading Brenda Novak’s books and I totally enjoyed this one. I am now going to begin Book 2 of this series.
When the book began to build, I continued to tell myself I would stop at the end of the chapter, but I couldn’t! I really enjoyed reading it.
This is the first in the Fairham series. The characters are each strong and independent. They each have their own story and tragic events to overcome. I was impressed with the twists this book takes, just when you think you have things figured out. Looking forward to book two The Secrets She Kept.
While I have read other Brenda Novak books I like better – Evelyn Talbot series for instance – this got better as I got into the story. It didn’t quite suck me in at the beginning.
This is a great book! The twists and turns that this book takes are awesome! This book starts with Maisey going home to help her brother get his life back on track and hopefully get hers back on track as well. She has gone through a painful divorce and the loss of a child. She goes home to heal, even though it means facing her mother with whom she has a very difficult relationship with. Once she gets home, she runs into Rafe and his daughter, Laney, who is blind. Rafe and Maisey have a history, but that doesn’t stop the chemistry between the two of them. Maisey learns about a sister that died when she was very young, her brother was blamed for the death and he still blames himself, even though he was only a child. The secrets in this book keep coming and coming. This was one that I had a hard time putting down!
Enjoyed this book. It was an intriguing story with a little romance added to it. I felt like I really got to know the main characters.
OMG What a book!! Could not put it down!!
Brenda does it again draws the reader into the story. This book is a keeper!!
Fabulous book. The characters immediately came to life to me. This is one of those books that you have to fight with yourself to not jump to the end to see how the story is going to turn out. I wasn’t expecting the tears that developed when I read the end.
