Delicious Regency Romp!!
I absolutely adore Regency, but I am often disappointed with less-than-stellar writing and the constant revisiting of the same tropes without interesting twists. This book was just a lot of fun from page one right through to the end. We’re plunked down in the middle of a very uninteresting ladies’ luncheon where an authoress of a book on moral rectitude is holding forth on the exhilarating topic of fichus! Our heroine just wishes for it all to be over and can’t understand why the woman’s milquetoast son—the authoress’s perfect picture of the ideal gentleman in human form—is singling her out. But he is harboring more than one secret—he’s not as bland as he appears and has been secretly in love with her. The heroine’s internal dialogue is a delight to read as she gives us her take on her world. When she finds out at least some of his secrets, things get really interesting. I loved the witty banter between them and their other interactions. The author has created two incredibly fun characters who are such a blast to watch. A pure delight of a book. This is the first one I have read by this other, but it certainly will not be the last.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is the first book I’ve read by Charlie Lane, and I found it a great, light-hearted rom-com in a historical setting, with fun, humour and wit. Its a rollicking, fast paced story, with quick witted dialogue, a book fairy, an overbearing mother (a notable writer of an awful guide to good manners called the Lady’s Guide to Moral Rectitude), amateur dramatics, and mistaken impressions of each other, with associated misunderstandings and explanations.
It was unusual in that the main male character, Carson (Lord Trevor), was the ‘goody two shoes’; rather than the female lead, and although Allison’s occasional swear words caught me out at first, it was appropriate for the tone and style of the story. There’s a great cast of colourful and well drawn supporting characters, including the various amateur actors co-opted into Lord Hellwater’s productions.
I particularly loved the epilogue, the discussion on the doorstep and and the meeting with his mother (no spoilers here, but its a great ending).

As a novella goes not terribly long. It’s well written and fun tho with an unexpected twist at the very end.

Part of the London Secrets series book 0.5 a well written story by an Author I have not read before she is now on my to follow list. I enjoyed reading Carson Allworthy, Viscount Trevor and Miss Allison Shropshire’s story and I especially liked his Mother’s surprise to them at the end. A lesson on know it alls failure!
This one had me smiling right from the beginning Allison’s thoughts about Lord Trevor were you funny you just know that they are going to come back and bit her. Moral luncheons what an idea! You will love Carson and Allison they are two peas in a pod and the writing was brilliant. It is a quick, cute, and wonderful book to spend my afternoon with. High praise for this charmer I hope you pick it up. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
