From the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Keeper comes a “moody, suspenseful page-turner” (People, Best Book Pick) filled with mystery and spellbinding secrets.Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories. One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful … midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. He is never found, and the family is torn apart, the house abandoned.
Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as a novelist. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old Edevane estate—now crumbling and covered with vines. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone…yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies from a masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.

This was a great book. Well thought out characters, great writing and wonderful time changes. I will definitely read more from this author. My only criticism is that the ending was too pact. But I love it inspite of it. I highly recommend.
Once you understand the timeline and who the people are it is an excellent read. Enjoyed this book very much. Be sure to note who the characters are and the time line in the story and you will love this book.
I enjoyed how the author gives the reader bits of information and you are able to put the clues together. Then a new twist happens to make the reader rethink the solution. This was a wonderful story and I am excited to read more stories written by Kate Morton.
Kate Morton does not disappoint! Just when I think I had it figured out, it turned out to be not what I thought. I love unpredictability in a book!
Did not enjoy it as much as the Secret Keeper. It was contrived.
This was a great summer read for me. Well written.
I love how unpredictable this book was. The characters were well rounded and easy for me to relate to. Every time I thought I had this book figured out, there was a new twist. This was the third of Kate Morton’s books I have read and I will definitely read more from this author. Very good book.
The ending was a surprise. I lowered my rating because transitions were sometimes not smooth.
Engaging intertwined stories. Well written and enjoyable book with interesting, believable characters. I particularly enjoyed Eleanor, who is much more than she seems to her children and the reader. The book goes back and forth between the early 1930s and 2003, but not in a choppy or disjointed way. We’ll structured plot. I was kept guessing …
Nice blend of three generations of family lies and secrets. Some surprises.
Couldn’t put it down,so many twists and turns weaving of characters. Some unexpected revelations at the end bringing all the different threads together. Highly enjoyable.
One of the best books I’ve read.
The plot unfolds in two separate time periods, but the two sets of characters circle around to meet in the end. Wonderful plotting.
Couldn’t put it down! So many surprises I didn’t see coming in this book. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, a plot twist changed everything. Just read it!
This is a well written book with a great plot.
Loved this, a great story!
This book had me guessing all the way through. Her endings are always a surprise. I couldn’t put it down.
I have never read Kate Morton and was impressed. It was easy to read and had insight to to WW1 that I never knew.
One of the best books I have read in a long time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I became very involved in the story and with the characters.
