From the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Keeper comes a “moody, suspenseful page-turner” (People, Best Book Pick) filled with mystery and spellbinding secrets.Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories. One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful … midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. He is never found, and the family is torn apart, the house abandoned.
Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as a novelist. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old Edevane estate—now crumbling and covered with vines. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone…yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies from a masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.

A deliciously compelling mystery.
I’m totally grooving on this wonderfully written, atmospheric novel. It has everything I love — a country house, English setting, precocious teenager, books, detectives––and a mystery.
I really enjoyed the story about a family full of secrets and a detective who decides to solve an old crime of a missing child.
Kate Morton develops incredible characters who lead you through the book seamlessly, blending the whodunnit of the past with present day story and discoveries. I loved all the twists and turns of this book, the constant guessing, rooting for each complex character while suspecting them of the worst possible action. I couldn’t put it down, …
After reading a few Kate Morton novels last year, I found myself enamored with her storytelling and character creation abilities. I added all of her books to my TBR and included The Lake House on my monthly Book Bucket List on my blog, where followers vote to select one read per month for me — this won as my June novel and I finished it over 6 …
Kate Morton has hit another home run! This one takes you on a fascinating journey of a family that on the surface seems charmed and idyllic. Deep beneath that veneer however is the trail of heartache, betrayal and loss. Wonderfully told story that unwraps the delusions of generations who have suffered from loss and disappointment, and brings them …
Every Kate Morton is very different from her other books but all are full of secrets, mystery and suspense. I think this book and her others are wonderfully written with constant surprises.
Kate Morton has done it again. (And again. And again.) She manages to create nuanced, layered, multi-period mysteries with large casts of rich, sympathetic, memorable characters who haunt the reader long after the pages of the book are closed.
From past to present, THE LAKE HOUSE is lush and dark, enticing readers to enter each building, estate, …
There have been a few Kate Morton books I gave up on. This was not one of them. I loved this story! I read so many forgettable books, but I’ve never forgotten this one. It’s one that stuck, try it.
This book was a journey! It has climbed its way up to one of my top five books of all time. I didn’t know anyone was writing them like this anymore.
First book by her I read I found it to be great , just when you think you know
what is happening another twist happens
It was a Book Club read would never read !
Exceptional story that I couldn’t put down. Twists and turns…sometimes predictable…sometimes mind blowing. A missing child, a detective, secrets, time shifts from past to present, heartrending scenes. Such a talented author! Loved it!
I loved this book almost as much as I loved The Clockmaker’s Daughter. Morton weaves together complex twists like no one else, and the characters are so beautifully drawn. The ending coincidence stretched credence a little, but it was great to have a satisfactory tie-up to the mystery. I highly recommend!
There is a reason this author is a best-seller. She is just plain great. A wonderful storyteller with clean stories, but with such a sense of mystery. She is the kind of author I try to emulate, because she is simply an excellent writer. Something that we do not always see in the multitude of books available these days. An author whose books are …
Haunting story of a prominent family in the 1930’s. Raised the question,is anyone we love and think we know, for real? And, how far to we go to protect the ones we love?
Loved it!! Love anything by Kate Morton!!
I love all of Kate Morton’s books. Intricate plotting and wonderful characters.
Kate Morton draws you into each book she writes and leaves you wanting more at the end. She is an excellent author!
Love Kate Morton, great author!
Great mystery and one of the main characters is a writer of mystery. The story jumps back and forth starting in 1933 and then goes to 2003. Sometimes the change is confusing and it isn’t until the end that some of the segments reveal what their relevance is to the story. If you like a well-wrapped-up pleasant ending you will enjoy this story.
