Wow, after a somewhat slow start, I would not and did not want to put this book down. Wonderful characters, great historical setting.
Hard to say too much with out giving away the plot. Spies were all over during WW II gathering information for Germany to win the war. The fact that they used children as a pawn in their plot would not be surprising, since they had no moral conscience. I was a bit disappointed that the book ended at the dock. I was hoping for a bit of life in Canada.
An excellent story set mainly in Coventry and Cornwall prior to and during WW2.
I felt there were a few loose ends, the editing lacking somewhat, and a few parts not very credible; however, I would still have no hesitation in recommending this book.
I have mixed feelings about this novel. I was very interested in the story and wanted to find out what happened. However, I found that some things were a little hard to buy.
Elenor moves to Coventry to help take care of her aunt. Once there, she connects with Rose, the daughter of her aunt’s housekeeper. Eventually Elenor returns to run her family’s farm. Rose’s parents are killed by bombs during World War II and Elenor becomes her guardian. Elenor realizes that Rose has a secret and needs to be protected. With the help of a Canadian pilot, they work together to protect Rose.
Book is worth reading.
Seven-year-old Rose survived the bomb that destroyed her home and killed her mother, but will she survive the toxin of gossiping tongues?
Rose left the bombed-out shell of Coventry to join Elenor on her Cornwall farm. Elenor is the only person in Rose’s life who had ever offered her love, and now that the child is an orphan, Elenor plans to adopt her, no matter the cost. At nineteen, Elenor has already sacrificed everything including her love for a Canadian pilot at the start of WWII. She returns to her family’s farm to raise food for her shattered country—a country suffering from destructive bombs above and food shortages below.
Author Glynis Peters makes history live again through the pages of this book. She has written a realistically strong female heroine in Elenor and in the other women who worked alongside Elenor to feed a nation at war. “The Secret Orphan” throbs with intrigue, heartbreak and danger. Just when Elenor is at her breaking point, a jealous woman with a poisoned tongue accuses Rose of being a German spy. Now Elenor’s farm and life are in danger. Rose is in acute danger. Elenor must decide between fight and flight.
One of THE best historical novels I have read in a long time…not a genre that I normally read but one I will look for more books…
I instantly fell in love with the story line, I became invested in each character but Elenor and Rose were the primary characters that you felt the most emotions. When I started reading I didn’t want to put my tablet down but life trickled through to my reading and I had commitments to uphold.
I’m not one that likes when a review gives up the story so I won’t do that.
I will say that I was so invested in the story line at the end I was like WHAT? I want more…I have to know what happened to Elenor and Rose…I want to hear about their lives after the war…I hope the author writes another book to go along with this one…
During World War II, Coventry, England was bombed several times by the German Luftwaffe. The most devastating of these attacks occurred on 14 November 1940. On that evening, 515 German bombers carried out a coordinated attack, code-named Operation Mondscheinsonate (Moonlight Sonata). After the bombing, Coventry lay in ruins.
It is during this attack that the novel, The Secret Orphan, by Glynis Peters, begins. Bombs are falling, and the world of six-year-old Rose Sherbourne comes crashing down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline.
There was romance, mystery, tragedy, trials and a happy ending. Everything one would want in a book. I will be following this author as I greatly enjoy her writing.
I hope there is a second book that will follow the characters from the end of this book.
