“The Secret of the Pendant” earns 4/5 Turquoise Mysteries…Fun!
I started the Blooms, Bones, & Stones series with the fifth book, “The Secret of the Pendant,” and judging the book by its cover, I was very excited. However, names not varied enough for my taste (Carlo? Carly? Corby?), and a third-person narrative I had to get used to, but as for Olivia Swift, the author, my engagement with her mystery was the primary reason I didn’t give up…it was worth it!
Corby Santana, a character introduced into the group in book four, is still reeling from her life with, a now jailed, ex-husband. She continues to lack confidence and is reticent explore a more fulfilling relationship with childhood friend, Carlo Sanchez. Circumstances arise in which Corby inherits a property, some cash, and a very old necklace from a great-uncle whom she hadn’t seen since she was a young girl. She only remembered him as a “nice man.” The property is a bit out of the way from the hustle and bustle of town, and the house needs some renovations, but she is still excited about this and her friends all agree to help. Fixing it up and selling it may be her best option. But, it is curious that in the will it mentions the property and necklace could only be inherited by the female bloodline in the family. Then there is the strange caretaker, the holes dug in the basement, things she discovers about her family, and the pendant that holds a strong power.
Olivia Swift has a creative mind penning a delightful tale that I thoroughly enjoyed, and around a hundred pages, one can finish quickly. The mystery incorporated a clever legend of murder and treasure, revealing entertaining connections with the present, and a very, very “Oh, my!” ending. Used to longer novels, I missed some of the details, descriptions, and background into characters present and past. However, I recommend this book, and am personally eager to read the rest of the series.
I was interested in this book from the first page. I love cozy mysteries and this one also includes a touch of the paranormal. When you add in a sweet romance you have a great read! I really enjoyed the way the characters and the storyline were developed. I loved the twists and turns in the plot right up to the happily ever after ending. I loved this author’s writing style and will be looking for more from her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. I liked the premise, the characters and the plot. There is a romance, a ghost, a couple of villains, quilts, gardening and an inheritance. Well written and well paced.
