The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

A coming of age story about a young girl named Lily, who lost her mother when she was young and has an abusive father. The story takes place in South Carolina in 1964 the year of the Civil Rights Act. Lily ends up leaving home When Lily’s beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a group of angry white men on her way to register to vote. They end up in Tiburon South Carolina after having found a picture of a black Virgin Mary with “Tiburon, S.C.” on the back written in her mothers handwriting. Once there they find a jar of honey in a sore with that label and end up at the home of three middle-aged black sisters who produce the honey. here Lily and Rosaleen, feel acceptance for the first time and become part of the family. A lot of different things happen but I will let you read it for yourself, if you haven’t so far.
