The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Really good book and movie. I would recommend
The book was wonderfully written. Beautiful words and original phrasing. It was a delight to read. The characters were quite memorable.
Just read it. That’s all I want to say really. If you loved The Help, The Book Thief, The Underground Railroad, All The Light We Cannot See, or to Kill A Mockingbird, I guarantee you will love this. Some books come highly recommended, others are unmissable. This falls into the latter category. I have a pile of books my daughter should read when she’s older and this is definitely one of them. Love, love, love. It’s wise and tender and heart breaking and delicate and unbreakable all at once. Read it.
A definite classic with beautiful relationships and universal themes!
Great story!
A wonderful coming of age story in the south.
I’ve read this book twice and a friend decided to give it to me for my birthday. She knew how much I liked it. You feel for the main character and her life story. She is brave, determined, and smart. You love her honesty and open spirit. This book drew me into her world and quest. Highly recommend if you missed reading this one. I did not care for her second book « The Mermaid Chair « but this one is a winner.
I loved this book. I also saw the movie a few times. Very enjoyable. The characters are wonderful. Highly recommend it
An excellent story of escape from an abusive father, a quest to learn more about her mother and of positive race relations in the deep south.
It was excellent! A true classic about both the power and fragility of women and how their bond with one another empowers them and crossed social class and economic boundaries.
Heart felt story
Loved it so much! Learned a lot.
