The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

My favorite book.
Wonderful story with interesting and complex characters
A white teenager is coming of age on a South Carolina peach tree farm managed by her father. The teen’s name is Lily. Rosaleen, Lily’s nanny and her father’s housekeeper, plans to vote in the upcoming election; however, circumstances prevent this.
Lily awaits nightly visits of bees which she believes live in the walls of her bedroom, an occurrence her abusive father doesn’t believe. Could this be magic if she captures them?
Later, discovering a honey jar label with a Black Madonna on it, believed to be similar to a Black Madonna picture Lily’s mother kept, begins Lily’s and Rosaleen’s journey. Eventually Lily encounters the interesting Boatwright sisters and learns about life, bee-keeping and finds solace in a pink house with August Boatwright.
This book I can honestly say is a true page turner. Original storyline starting out with sadness but leaves the reader with hope that mankind can be giving.
