The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Especially loved the rich, strong characters. Couldn’t help but feel and care about them.
Wonderful view of the closeness that existed among women in the South. Not a stereotype definitely, but abuse, a theme present in many cultures, unfortunately.
This lovely family of Black southern women, protect this young white girl. They mold her into a better human being, by example.
Very well writte
Wonderful, wonderful book!
I loved how the author evolved the characters little by little. You felt like you knew that person really well but there was still a mystery about their past and you couldn’t wait to find out. It gave a portrayal into the lives of educated and middle class black families in a time were they struggled for equality. As a white person, I felt ashame as to how people treated black folks in that era. Was a great read and really enjoyed the opportunity to share their everyday lives of love, tragedy and tryumphs.
Loved this book and the writers style.
ie setting in the 50’s and 60’s with a realistic view of pre civil rights south. from the view of a young white lady that has issues with her father, and the society that she lived in. very well handled, and the bee keeping parts were also fascinating.

Disappointing. I expected more. Rather simple.
Sue Monk Kidd is an excellent writer! The story is well developed as are the characters. She has a poetry to her writing and it is inspiring
